Unladen weights??

I'll admit it, I can't find a decent table of unladen weights anywhere.

 

I recall seeing a few threads about this but can't find the answers.

 

I'm after getting a newer tipper, and like many on here I don't want to get an ops license etc... but want to continue to stay legal.

 

In order to do that I would like to know the unladen weight of various vans with a separate toolbox, single cab and ally tipping body(nothing too specific then)- then I can work out the weight of tools/driver/crew and end up with

xxx kg for chips/logs.

 

The vehicles I am interested in (and I keep asking the sellers for the UW - mostly to no avail) are as follows

 

SWB or MWB transit

VW Crafter

Mecedes sprinter

Iveco 35/xxxx

Canter

 

Not interested in front wheel drive, really - slightly better payload but less grip on grass. Already got landrover with 350kg payload.

 

Has anyone found a web-site that has such info - or has anyone on here weighed their own vehicle?

 

I don't yet want to man up and get a unimog or Thunderbird 2 so any info relating to 3.5 ton GVW would be most welcome.

 

My assumptions are

LWB = lower payload

Crew cab = lower payload

Steel tipper body = lower payload

Twin rear wheels = lower payload (a bit more stable)

none of the above

but our new Peugeot boxer 3500kg tipper ally body with tool compartment

mesh sides and mesh rear doors 2 crew tools and fuelled up

no chipper on

came in at a staggering 2880kg = 620kg payload

your have trouble trying to get the perfect 3.5 tonner

Well I can tell you my bosses lwb transit double cab tipper ways 3.160 with two blokes all are gear and 1/4 tank of fuel grp high sides on normal body no chipper waste of time in my eyes but I don't drive it so not to worried

Sorry, but Ive never understood using 3.5T trucks for tree work unless your doing small stuff, but even then, put the cord & rings in etc its surely way overloaded on all but the smallest stuff. Trees Which Id simply put in a trailer, chop it up, burn it or tip at a recycling place.

Some have little choice but to use 3.5 tonners as it is costly to obtain ops licence & maintain a larger vehicle. Then with ops licence you need a suitable yard to keep the vehicle preferably in your work area.

Then there is the extra catagories on your licence etc.

The list goes on & so does the cost.

Nothing like as expensive as being done for running overweight. A guy I know that runs a canter with a nice ali tipping body with a roller shutter toolbox behind the cab was pulled at leatherhead a few months back by vosa and found to be overweight. They took off most of the load before they could go on their way and they had to call a taxi for the third man because the thing cant even use all the front seats without putting the front axle over. He got a two grand fine and so did his boss, thats enough money to pay for a load of driving lessons and good bit towards a decent truck. Just think about it £1000 a ton for being over. A canter running about on HD springs with two ton excess weight on it , can you imagine the grief if that truck was involved in a fatal car crash.

iv got a sprinter ,payload is about 1200,with staff and gear ,towing is down on the daily at only 2t, but ample for my tracky and trailer

and i had a helper leaf added to keep it up ,

Can't you upgrade the towing to 3.5t? I thought I read that when I was looking at a Sprinter.

I didn't mention anything about being over weight & the complications associated so not quite sure why you quoted my post.

There are ways of running a smaller vehicle without being overweight, you just have to be smart about it.
