Ha, this! In fact you're going to give away most of them if you're anything like us. At full tilt even a handful produce more than you can eat but still need feeding... More importantly though I may have to steal that idea for the trampoline run.... Could be a nice 'extension' for my lot.

Ive pinched the sprocket on my Husky bar and its not replaceable. Not the end of the world but Im thinking I may use it as an excuse to get a new bar. Any views on the lightweight bars? Stock is low so choice is a bit limited to get one tomorrow but I can get a (Husky rebadge) Tsumura lightweight for a good price. Otherwise wait on something else. The current sprocket sort of works as long as Im really nice to it so I don't need to change straight away. Any thoughts from the collective? Would you wait for something or get the Husky/Tsumura? Using it for felling and cross cuts mainly.

Honestly, I'd not bother right now. With us bouncing in and out of flu regs, the chickens are stuck inside and it doesn't make me happy to see them that way. They're laying way less and moulting this year was by far the worst Ive seen it, presumably because they're just not as happy at the moment. That said... If you're willing to build them a big enough run (Ours is 5*4m and tall enough to walk around and still feels undersized for our 7 when they're stuck in it 24/7) then you're at least not having to keep them in too small of an area, but its still not the same as having them roam about the place messing it up 🤣.

This is true.. despite my love for the 435 it's actually what I do now. We get alot of pallets so I break them with a big bar, keep the best wood for projects, burn the rest. Less mess and more fuel as there's no wastage.
-
435 is a great saw. I've just replaced mine with a 445 as I have been using it on more forestry stuff for snedding as I really like the way it handles, starts just by looking at it and is built well like the bigger pro saws. Just wanted a little more HP that I get from the 445, but it will rinse through pallets obviously and can tackle decent logs. Mine is available if youre interested...
-
Im not doing loads of forestry (Mostly smaller hand cutting) but I have 2 and it works great. A little 445II which I can chuck about and a 565 for the big stuff. The 445 is technically a landowner not pro saw but its solidly built and runs well. Seems a better option if you can than 1 saw fits all. Both saws combined cost me less than a 400 or 462

Aliexpress is the direct version of Alibaba. TBH you can find cheaper in the UK and shipping is so crazy on this stuff right now (in singles) its not worth it even with factory direct savings.

Help to identify what species of tree these logs are from?
Ben Pinnick replied to Rich05uk's topic in Firewood forum
Yeah I'd agree oak is pretty bad unless you get it up to temp. I'd generally avoid for firewood. Second picture for sure. FWIW I used to mix home cut (from our wood) with bought but stopped buying in and just bought roadside timber and processed myself to get stocks. The bought in was too variable. The same supplier would send me dry stuff one time then rinsing wet the next and it was never fully seasoned. Now I do my own for a full year outside before drying and I can burn pretty much anything I stick in the pile with minimal fuss and waste. -
Also... On the flip side shipping is crazy expensive at the moment. Say a decent Chinese chipper is £650 direct. 2 years ago you could import it for £50 a unit, double it's price and it's now £1400 Inc vat at an ok margin. Even in small numbers. Now that same shipping would be £250 maybe? So the same chipper is £1800 after margin and vat. Maybe more. Then you have brands selling direct Vs indirect that could add 30-40% more again. The point is as with all things but especially at the moment don't assume a 2500 chipper is any different to a £1400 one. It's perfectly possible it's the same product and you're not even getting ripped off for the 2500 one.

The fact you can buy a Kohler engine for not much more than £400 would make me question the price straight away. Not that you can swap a loncin to Kohler even if you wanted to do that one day. A sinolink would cost you £1100 ish bought direct, same engines, similar builds. You can get one in the UK for 1400 inc. When my Jansen flail mower didn't fit together their solution? ... Hit it with a big hammer 🔨. Yeah thanks guys I could probably have figured that out myself. Ok it works just fine but you're not necessarily paying for better units I would say, just that someone else figured out which ones are decent and imported it for you.

13-inch MacBook Air - Space Grey - Apple (UK) WWW.APPLE.COM Now with the new Apple M1 chip for faster-than-ever performance and all-new capabilities on MacBook Air. Buy... This one with upgraded memory will be fine as long as she has a cloud storage account for backups/photos (or doesn't need to store lots of pictures on her laptop). Its probably worth dropping the extra £200 on this one for the 512B SSD if you're concerned. It will add long term usefulness for sure. Be aware too they used to offer a student discount at the apple store. Don't know if they still do that. Thats £1399 for the base laptop + mem upgrade + 512G SSD. You could spend £50 more and get the higher spec starter with the same upgrades, not sure what that gives you in real terms though, other than a bigger bill.

+1 for Macbook air. Work brilliantly, last ages (Ive had one do 8 years hard graft when I used to travel the world a lot) small enough to slip into a bag for carrying about, but with a great keyboard/track pad for actual work. Typing this on one right now. Its worth noting as well the Macbook air is the nicest to type on (of the apple range that is), so if you want to get her something for doing actual work on, its definitely the choice. Its going to rinse you for £1300 min probably, but its worth it long term. Just be sure to get the (current) 2020+ model not some discounted pre-2020 version. The 2020 on one fixed all the stuff they ruined on the 2019 version.

Sorr Sorry I didn't mean it was absolute max, clearly you can run any size bar you want within reason depending on what you're cutting and yes I would assume that my 70cc saw could run bigger than 28s. But from what Ive seen recently it seems like saws are being listed with roughly cm > cc as the recommended max size (including echo's 70cc saw)
-
I would say that its cms > cc. So your 70 cc echo would run a 70cm bar max (28). So by my reckoning the max bar ratio is dividing by 2.54, but 3.0 probably will result in nicer handling.

Advice or recommendations on smaller chippers around 15-18hp
Ben Pinnick replied to GLynch's topic in Large equipment
The black tools looks like a sinolink chipper which I have. Not perfect but fully functional and sturdy. See the other recent chipper thread for some thoughts on it from myself and another owner. -
Depends on what you're doing. For lots of felling and straight forward cross cutting keep the c85 and just be mindful of the kickback when working around the nose. If your doing a mix you could get a 3/8 semi chisel like an Oregon 73dpx. The semi will be more tolerant of dirt etc. when doing work close to the ground as well as easier to sharpen and less prone to kickback. It only takes 2 mins to swap back to the c85 when you want it. Better to have multiple chains for all the things you want to do I reckon. You'll get more life from each chain in the long run.

I think it could be because Starmer has more brains than the entire other side of the house. He knows that BJ will destroy the conservative party so why bother risking it? He only needs to come out fighting as the end game for an election draws near. Boris is his own worst enemy (and the Tory's too) so why put expose yourself to the unknown shenanigans of your party by taking strong stances? With Boris' majority & behaviour towards his own MPs if they don't toe the line, he can't win a vote, so it's all meaningless posturing otherwise. And he doesn't strike me as the sort of self-aggrandising, meaningless posturing type.

I tend to throw helmets down in the footwell of the truck where they're going to get warmed regularly enough to stay fresh. Car boot (in an estate) would be ok too. Anywhere that gets warm enough to dry it on a regular basis. Also consider some helmet santiser to stop the bacteria growing - something like - HELMET FRESH - Kingud Biodegradable Bike Care WWW.KINGUD.CO.UK This 100ml pump spray packs enough punch and doses to keep your helmet fresh for up to 6 months and its not just...

Probably the same unit - Black Tools 2000 LTE ,15HP Loncin Wood chipper/ garden shredder 4", 12cm" - Blacktools WWW.BLACKTOOLS.CO.UK Price Drop for September 21 until stock lasts was £1782 now £1498 Black tools UK Brand 2000GTE PRO, 15hp, Key start... TBH if shipping wasn't bonkers expensive I'd say import one, but it is. Thats why I stopped bringing in stuff from China (for now). If you want something really compact (Store in garage/shed) then you need to scale it down. I have a Jansen flail mower, its fine - the Loncins & Lifans are good as as mentioned better than the Briggs equivalents iMHO. They're copies of Hondas so parts can be pretty easy to find too. I have a Sinolink ATV chipper I brought in from China myself. Its a design widely replicated so here's the pros and cons; Pros - not badly made TBH. It was relatively easy to assemble although if I was making them I would change some design points. The rotating spout is useless for example. - It does just about manage 12cm as advertised - 10 is safe - Its not let me down yet. The Lifan engine is good - Tyres are good, as are the hubs. Although its heavy its well balanced over the axles, so not hard to move around. Cons - Its noisy AF. But then all those basically unmuffled 4 strokes are. So be aware your neighbours will not love you for it. - The drum design wont shred masses of stuff at once. It's a chipper. If you put in alot of pine fir or too much leaf from summer deciduous in you'll just be clearing it out every 2 mins. - The feed narrows enough that you need to ensure harder stuff is trimmed before going in. Flexy fresh cut will bend to fit the hole as its dragged in, the stuffer stuff wont. - The wide stance extensions meant my chassis bent at the axle plates. Ive remedied this with some M10 bar that spans the two mounting plates rather than the bolts they installed. I think if Id directly mounted the axles that would not have been an issue, but then it wouldn't be as stable off road. - Its bigger than you think it will be. Its a bit of a beastie. Will accept clean/cleanish chip and logs over 2" (please chip smaller!). Easy to access the site just drive to the very top of our drive to where you find a green container. Open the gate into the field and you can tip inside the field, but please not on the track. The ground is firm so you'll have no issues backing into the field to tip.
