  2. I guess it works it out in the same way as it did in my calculations although it only works if you're above your anchor which we never really are. 90kg climber, 500mm of rope and 250mm from last anchor is 7.6kn so roughly the same
  3. @ANK had posted up in the 2 rope consultation thread about the petzl asap no longer being allowed at work and since then has been asking about forces and anchor strengths etc so I just put 2 and 2 together. May be wrong though!

  5. So if you're climbing above your anchor then it's only 250mm of slack in the climb line?
  6. If you're looking for training sooner and you're up for an air b&b for a couple of days then hi-line training in Exeter is a very, very good training provider. They actually care about teaching you as opposed to taking money and getting you through an exam!
  7. Am I right in saying the furthest theoretical fall (assuming you stuck to all the rules) is 750mm? You can have 500mm of slack in your climbing equipment and you can climb 250mm above your anchor? If you fell you would fall 250mm to the anchor and then 500mm past that. Assuming a climber weighs 90kg and falls 750mm then the velocity at stop is 3.83 m/s. Which gives us a kenetic energy of 661.5J but that's not useful so as open space man says you need to know how far the climber falls once stopped or his deceleration. It's quite different depending on length: 50mm = 13230N or 13.230kn 100mm= 6615N or 6.615kn 200mm= 3307N or 3.307kn The distance you fall is all down to how springy your equipment is, how static your ropes are and how hard your anchor is. I would suggest maybe 50-75mm would be a good distance on 500mm of rope?
  8. If I'm doing chipping fora good amount of time I put some in-ear foam plugs in with the protos muffs ontop. It's a trade off but not having the muffs snagging in trees or on branches is more important to me than the inconvenience of putting in-ear plugs in
  9. That may also be due to covid. I know my local supplier is down to only 2 candidates a course from the usual 4 because of the rules and they are pushing their guys through as they are advertising for more staff. That being said my local company has spaces on courses!
  10. I'd be wary of charging a super low price. I've done it before to gain experience where I wanted to be on big removals and stuff. Trouble is, after you get more experience and realise that you need more money it's harder to up rates
  11. Pretty much. I've got a 4.5 tonne winch on the landy and that's a 10mm cable
  12. MBL of 7x19 10mm is usually ~52 to 64 kN depending on the producer but its SWL is a lot lower like you say as it's usually 1/5th minus 10% for an assembled winch cable. I'm not sure about the rules about winch cables and how the MBL and SWL works though. As they aren't suspending a load I don't know what their requirements are.

Heard that before and watched them destroy everything below them and do stuff like leaving massive stubs so when you're rigging bits down you end up trying to hook stuff out the tree with utility rods. 😂 Personally I am always wary of a large pay range when I was looking for work, from experience they always give you the lowest and you fight your way up to get more 😂
  17. If you are already installing a secondary deep cycle, split charge system and inverter I would go with the 240v charger then. Just get a good quality inverter if you haven't already got one. I would suggest pure sine as it will be good quality (you tend not to get crap sine wave) and you will get more efficiency out of it!
  18. I'd go with tank vent. You can check the fuel system by draining the tank and taking the fuel filter off. Put the fuel cap on and disconnect the fuel line from the carburettor. Attach the fuel line to the vacuum tester and try to pull a vacuum, it shouldn't hold vacuum but will hold pressure. Also stick a new spark plug in as I've had them fail when hot but work when cold. It usually has a lot quicker failure/reset cycle than you're having. If that doesn't work then I'd go down the road of something else getting hot like the ignition module or something. Buy a can of freezer spray and get it hot to the point it fails then spray one thing at a time with the freezer spray and try to start it again.

  20. I always got told that the "wrist thickness" thing was bad practice. You could swing a couple people off a wrist thickness oak but it would be touching cloth on a willow. Too many variables I guess, V shaped, U shaped. Pick a brittle tree and see if you can hang a body off a wrist thickness branch with a V union and that could be an industry minimum? 😂
  21. This is what I don't get about van prices. I'm looking at a 16 plate with 40-50k on it for £16,500+VAT but then theres 13 plates with 110k on the clock for 8k. They seem to hold their value really well then plummit of the face of the earth!
  22. It is disheartening. Especially when you look up "tree surgeon salary" and things like that and see pathetic numbers when you know that's not true when you compare it to how much you can make working for yourself. I think it puts a lot of people off the industry, on the bright side it may pave the way for a lack of man power in the future (I know my local utility arb guys are crying out for staff) and may push rates up and give this industry the much needed pay rise that it needs.
  23. Well, I've just looked again and the advert has gone. It was a double cab, tipper with the 2.3 engine that had done 45,000. 2016 year. It was up for £16500+vat
