  1. The van owner or homeowner by any chance?
  2. Pics are a bit blurry until you click on them but stupidly, didn't get one. I can confirm though that it had pea sized cones
  3. I always struggle to tell the difference, any ideas? My gut is normally Lawson. Any tips on differentiating? If its neither, I'm really done for 😂
  4. Forgot to say, its in N2 post code (Barnet, London)
  5. Been let down today on a robo flail, due to a mechanical problem. Is anyone able to assist either tomorrow, Saturday, Monday or Tuesday? Ideally needs to be something fairly beefy, but at this point, I'll take whatever I can get and just leave you to the brambles if not a large flail!
  6. Do you want to do a days flailing for me in London N2 post code tomorrow, Saturday or Monday? I think we have mutual friends (D Andrews)
  7. Damn, guess I'll have to hold out for Hydrogen technology as I don't think electric is the answer. Highly doubt they test them overweight and towing a big chipper, I bet the winter range is about 20 miles 😂
  8. Someone said to ask Paul at the AA so I was evidently refering to employees. I don't think I could of asked my question in a more genuine or less offensive way.
  9. Yeah, the penny has just dropped. I could definitely get much better mpg in the old transit when I was driving, good point.
  10. That's actually pretty impressive. We installed a similar thing on the 17' transit, increase fuel economy by a genuine 10% and the turbo give much more of a kick. Was gutless before. I mean its still gutless when loaded but definitely better
  11. Currently looking to renew our fleet and as we spend around 2.5k + a month on diesel across 4 vehicles, 10-20% better economy can make a small difference to profits. Here are mine: 2007 Transit tipper (Tows a mix of 650kg 5 inch chipper and 1,500kg 8 inch chipper) - 18.5 mpg 2017 Transit tipper (Tows a mix of 650kg 5 inch chipper and 1,500kg 8 inch chipper) - 22.5 mpg 2017 3.2l Ford ranger (Tows 3.5t MEWP and 3.5t log trailer) - 21 mpg when towing approx 24-30 when not. 2014 transit connect eco something (Used for quoting and stump grinding) - 55 mpg Looking to change to a 150bhp 2022 FUSO canters
  12. Could you elaborate on the benefits you've found from being a member, does it extend to jobs you've won specifically because you are AA or does it help in a sense that it is 1 factor of many that means your company gets you work, or does it help skip certain compliance checks on new tenders/big companies? Genuinely curious. I will join when a contract forces me to, but it would be nice to hear some first hand good experiences that have come from joining. Speaking to someone from the AA is sort of like asking a car salesman why you should buy his car IMO
  13. Funnily enough, yesterday was the first time in 6 years where a domestic client has asked if we are arb approved. I explained my reasons for not wanting to join, briefly to which I then added, 'what do you think of the general standard of tree surgery for ' x london' borough, namely this poorly pollarded Lime tree, which looks like Peggy Mitchell has had a go, directly outside your house?' 'Well yeah, looks really bad'. So I just told him that company, who has completed those works are arb approved... so it doesn't mean a lot. Won the job.
  14. If they did stuff that proactively helped our industry such as grants for training, pushing to get 3.5t limit changed to 5t with no O license or had a fund set up to prosecute poor work to trees in CA / TPO then I'd be interested
  15. Of the 3 council tenders we have gone for, 1 being a london Borough too, AA was absolutely not needed. They were happy with CHAS We also work for a number of big name builders, EA, Canals and housing association and its never been a requirement. Still yet to see the value...
  16. Horrendously quiet mid Jan, first time we have ever gone down to filling the next day, luckily never ran out. I normally keep lead times down to 2-3 weeks so we can scoop up better paying work but at the moment, filling the diary has become a focus as it will relieve a lot of pressure/stress. Not helped that a 2 week job got postponed at the last minute. Even subbed 5 days of council tree work 🤢 That was enough to motivate me to get things back on track and be proactive. Probably what was needed as I was getting too comfortable and relying on one customer a little too much. Few weeks ahead now of good work again and a couple of good opportunities lined up.
  17. RIP, so hard to keep the mentality that today could be the day, every day
  18. As an owner, I always try and blame myself first. Was there clearer instructions that I could of stated during the job briefing/notes? Am I responsible for explaining the method of removal (yes) Am I responsible for supplying boarding on the walls to prevent this happening (yes) If, it is 100% their fault, and in general, they are good lads, I would have a tool box talk about it on the Friday, explain the consequences of the mistake, and how you now need to put it right, and the loss in money to the business. And that this is what we will be doing going forward to prevent this issue. I always think, replacing staff who are 90% good is just not worth it a lot of the time, I would rather spend my time trying to improve them closer to 100%. Especially if I've already invested 1000's in their training and hours in moulding them into what my company represents. It wouldn't cross my mind to consider charging them for their mistakes.
  19. Heres another but with trailer, lawson cypress logs so v light Looks like the trailer is coming in at 2.86t out of 3.5t (train weight max is 6tonne) 12ft ifor. Looks empty in pic but id say 80% full
  20. Heres another. No tools or chipper, driver weighs 75kg. Small load tbh 3940kg as pic is blurry
  21. Time cannot and is not the only factor when quoting jobs.
  22. We have a lot of 2pm leave work finishes too We charge by the job not the day/hour.
  23. Unfortunately that's not how accepting a quote works. When you have to travel, load and unload, 2pm site finish is definitely a full days work. Ill message you if I decide to take you up on your school of pricing offer
  24. I love how electric vans are allowed to weigh 4.25 tonne and can be driven on the same license as 3.5 Why not increase it for all of us! There is not a single arb 3.5t van towing a chipper that isn't overloaded most days. I don't need a bigger van, just a bigger payload! I think 5.5t without needed a new license or O license, or 12 weekly checks is a fair solution
