  1. Massively disagree. This is one of the most dangerous jobs in the UK, its horrendous for your back and causes all other sorts of musculoskeletal issues reulting in a short time frame to 'earn your money' before retirement. We work very long hours and its certainly a skilled job. We combine science and art in the form of reductions (well some of us do). With that outlook, how do you quote with any confidence? I really don't think you know what a hideous profit is. It certainly isn't 2 grand a day profit even for a 3 man crew which would be unheard of in our game. Then you look at other industries, traders etc who would be making those sorts of profit per man. For a lazy comparison, a footballer will make more in one week than some companies here do in profit in 4 years
  2. Yeah, normally i pay around 1.1 - 1.4k (I've used cheap before and never again, ill happily pay a premium for hassle free service) This one was a 5 way, massive pedestrian walk way, 2 x TFL bus closures, crane permit (for a mewp no less) and manned lights so we can go 'all red'. Permits, drawings etc. If you're not based in London, they might be more slack. I now have to have crane permits for a poxy mewp on the carriage way.
  3. Probably the case in a few situations. Can't tell you the number of times we've won jobs as we were the only ones who insisted on TM, which makes our quote 2k more than the others straightaway
  4. Sometimes no, sometimes yes. There is definitely some customers who try and get 5-9 quotes. Getting that many quotes drastically increases your chance of someone making a mistake when quoting haha I quoted a large conny felling job at around 20k as there was zero access for big machines because the farmer next door wouldn't allow anyone on his land as he didn't want them to go. Found that out when asking on the quote This made the job easy 4 x longer and a horrible drag through brambles. Customer comes back saying he got 4 other quotes, 15k,22k,18.5k and 6k... Clearly the 5th company didnt ask about access and assumed it would be ok 😂
  5. £500 gross profit a day is a reasonable ask. I wouldn't be looking to shrink that down at all. I don't need £1,000 a day or whatever profit, but I sure want it for the stress and work I put in, so I wouldn't be saying no if I could charge it.
  6. For what its worth, I've never found anything other than dedicated stump grinders that good at grinding stumps. I've played with 2 different skid steers with a grinding attachement and a 3t? 360, all 3 had some pretty bad drawbacks either in flow rate limitations, visabilty to the stump or the smoothness of the slew movement on the stump Interested to see if you have any luck with an Avant though, please post if you do
  7. Can you get a 26 inch wide tracked grinder to site? Ive got a predator 38x if all else fails? Not far from you IIRC.
  8. Raising vehicle weight is exactly what our industry needs. 5.5t would be perfect as you cant always fit a 7.5 tonne lorry on domestics. Where as a tranist rated to 5.5t which is probably what most chip backs are doing when loaded with logs or Yew chip 😳 would be much nicer.
  9. This is the goal 👏
  10. I have indeed got the wrong idea, sorry One thing I will say, I have been through the books of several tree companies since I did a little write up on business expenses and lets just say years of experience doesn't necessarily mean you know how to do business. However I'm sure in your case you do
  11. A profitable business is not the same as a massive business. It does not need to be big at all. You can be small, and charge good money. Working x amount of days isn't the point I'm making. Working 1 high value day is much better than someone who essentially takes up 5 days of tree work for crap money. Anyway, you're right. Much the same as anyone can wake up each morning and dip their balls in boiling water, they too can do a very dangerous and hard job for crap money if they so wish.
  12. Then run it as a business or register it as a charity if you just want to get by 😅 The issue is that if you don't take the business seriously, you're unlikely to have the resources to pay staff the appropriate wage for what is a very hard and dangerous job. The arb industry must have the most 'hobby' ran businesses out there
  13. I don't know if this was aimed at my response at all but if you do this work purely for the enjoyment like a lot of members here do, why start a business? Why not just contract climb or work for someone. That would be better than dragging the industry rates down punishing us 'greedy guys' right? Plus way less stress I think there must be a few people in that position (Not saying you are as I likely misunderstood your post). Also the cost in beer difference between London and the North is because of the property it is served in and thus the rent/mortgage that is due and factored into each pint.

  15. What confuses me most in this industry is why are well all talking in pounds per hour and not salary's? The OP was for on the books staff right? This was the weirdest thing coming into this industry. For the record, anyone charging 500-650 a day for a 3 man crew isn't going to around much longer. All you are doing is barely covering costs, no profit. Lets not forget this is a business. Anyway: Lead climber £37,000 PA + Bonus + Overtime (1.5x saturday, 2x Sunday) 2nd Climber £28,000 PA + Bonus + Overtime (1.5x saturday, 2x Sunday) 1st year groundie (no quals) £24,000 PA + Bonus + Overtime (1.5x saturday, 2x Sunday) Based on 40hrs a week. Staff get a bonus whenever we do more than £1500 + VAT a day on a 3/4 man crew.
  16. Got a large roadside Oak fell planned in a month or so. Does anyone know any HIAB lorrys that would be interested? I know I need to pay for the haulage but don't particularly care for the stem, ideally they would take. Lorry will be protected in TM work zone and we have a crane permit. Pic attached for attention, much larger in person. Approx 1-1.5 meter diameter trunk, 10m in length. Post cose HA6
  17. Very good points, sounds like a better route to go down.
  18. Fair enough, I feared it might be. Just a shame as there's a lot of meat left on them
  19. @Hodge We use them already to put an edge back on the teeth when its on the grinder but found it quite slow to do on teeth that are really blunt. Plus I have around 100 to do.
  20. Pics for attention
  21. If they do, it will be this
  22. Good point 😅 I think I read into the mini digger part too much, I assume the mini digger is unrelated to the tree removal.
  23. They will all die and no one will want them, sorry. A no go in my opinion
  24. I don't really want to turn it into a which brand is better thread but I certainly get what you mean with the build quality to an extent. We have had minor issues on the st6 and st8 but none that stopped us from working. 2 issued were fixed over the phone and the other issues we had replacement parts sent out. If their back up service wasn't as good I'd be concerned but as it is so good, I'll live with it. Further to that we only keep them for 2-3 years before getting a new chipper anyway. I'm sure all brands have minor teething problems on new machines but as long as they rectify the issues swiftly, I'm good with it
  25. Thanks everyone, will go for it 👍
