  1. I thought it was simple in that I charge vat on all my services, pay that to hmrc. Then everything I buy like machinery, tools, fuel, materials etc, I claim all the vat back??? I had a read on hmrc website, seems like they are saying you work out the difference between what you've charged in and what you've paid out and that's what you get? Confused.
  2. So are there any tree surgery one man bands on here (using subbies as necessary), doing mainly small domestic trees and hedges, with a few small council/public jobs mixed in, which have gone VAT registered? How did you find it affected your workload? Did you lose more quotes than before? Did you have to get an accountant if you didn't have one before?
  3. So I invoice for labour and materials plus vat, then annually claim back vat from materials?
  4. I guess I hadn't thought of that...I suppose I could invoice customer for materials without VAT (as I can claim that back??) and invoice for labour with VAT...often my fencing jobs are similar proportions of labour and materials so I guess the customer would actually be paying about the same?
  5. Well I think I would lose work if I went vat registered on trees and fencing...or I would have to cut my rates. I would like to be vat registered across the board, I have done a lot of investment in the last two or three years, and could claim thousands back [emoji16] But what if I lost customers?!
  6. So I do tree work, stump grinding and fencing. Im not vat registered (yet!) I'm looking at buying a remote tracked grinder...about 6 grand of Vat on it. My question is can I run the grinding as a separate concern and be vat registered, whilst not being vat registered for trees and fencing??
  7. Great thread guys. I enjoy stump grinding...good money, easy and stress free!! No labour to worry about either. Here's a couple of a decent sized ash stump I did the other day...ground it right down, poor little grinder didn't like going to Australia and at one point it caught against the work and flipped back up, handle bar hit me straight in stomach and winded me[emoji23]
  8. Subbie climber with own gear 200 per day minimum. Groundsman with saw ticket 120 per day minimum. Sometimes more if we have a good day.
  9. It was a guy called Stuart. He knocked 20 percent off for me (which helps as I'm not vat registered), refunded my hire and will deliver to me FOC. The claw comes included. Helpful and friendly chap.
  10. I hired a post puller. It was literally awesome...the 4ton of uplift made light work of all the posts, and those that were rotted off, the claw attachment just winched the whole column of concrete out in one go. I thoughts I'd just hire one when needed but I've actually ordered one now [emoji4] didn't really want to spend 2k on that but it's not a lot in the grand scheme.. will save hours and hours in the future [emoji106]
  11. The trouble is they want to keep the main stem standing...as a feature... hmm yes I know
  12. It looks smaller than it is...a huge section of the back is actually lying on the ground behind the tree it came off where the main stem starts to split into several different stem... I measured it with a land tape at 60ft, so plus the main stem I'm thinking close to 80ft [emoji4]
  13. Thanks mattplace, I've checked out their website and they look useful.
  14. The access is ok...it is 1300mm, but if that's not enough I may be able to persuade them to remove a couple of shrubs then we have up to nearly 3000mm. Basically got to drive it across a lawn of the neighbours garden across the boundary and into the customer garden.
  15. What happens if the tree fails and you come screaming out of the sky? Surley I'm responsible even if you are self employed??
  16. Hi guys I've got an 80ft sycamore to take down, it's been condemned by tree officer, bracket fungi all over it and hollow inside etc... Can anyone recommend where to hire a good cherry picker to hire for the job. I've tried HSS hire and they are a joke, they took over a week to get back to me despite chasing them and they would only hire one for a whole week at least £1800 plus vat. The job is in Cambridgeshire. Here's the tree...
  17. I have upper tier as I do a fair bit of fencing as well as tree work. I was under the impression that if I was doing only trees I would only need lower tier, the fencing waste makes it upper tier. About 150 quid for 3 years. Doesn't break the bank really does it?
  18. Why is the date on this video JANUARY and all the trees are in full leaf??!! Baffled!

    FSI B22

Can't say for sure but I bought a b20 at 5.4k git quoted extra 2k for b22 However the b20 increased to over 6k after I bought mine so I would imagine about 8k for b22 Prices Inc vat
  21. Any qualified Loler testers out there? I'm near Huntington, Cambridgeshire...bit of climbing kit needs a fresh certificate...price?? Thanks
  22. It all depends on the people planting...if you've got two workaholics who are going mad thats different to two guys working hard steadily throughout the day and for the sake of completeness it's different again to two lazy people...stating the obvious I know, but it all depends on the people
  23. Going to a hire a post puller www.postpullers.com and see how I go...access for digger is poor 4ton pull on these post pullers
