  1. Yes that is correct, but my very rough cants won’t be much. And I can’t see me getting the bigger one out of the woods till it’s dried a bit over the summer. I had 3 or 4hrs and burning wet wood needs a good fire first then a leaf blower to keep it going, my helper (son) split the edge/bark off of some bits that were not worth doing anything with. edit and that was just to Cut down on the wood we had to burn, and some bits we scorched/steamed &knocked the bark off , those barkless bits bits got chucked in the undergrowth IMG_2974.MOV
  2. I didn’t bother with a pressure & vac test on this saw. I did as spud said. Set the carb to std settings about 1 1/4 turns out started it up and warmed it up. then tuned it. I left it a bit rich on the H for a while (edit it ran and idled fine) remember I was using the old piston. So I didn’t really need the heat cycle bit for the piston. btw this saw has a double port China exhaust on it as a found the uk oem exhausts were a bit restricted.
  3. Just a short part of me cutting yesterday , I had a 25”bar on it. The elm tree had to be debarked & burnt, “Council requirements” 😉. so the quickest way was to sort of noodled abit and bias cut as well as a little bit of ripping, and sort of ended up with a very very bad cant and a lot less wood to burn. but it really put the saw to the test with many long hard cuts the log was one length (approx 16’) so I cut it in half [2 x 8’ ] to make the job easier I think a used about 2 tanks of fuel btw I’m not a fan of the old style clutch covers as they get packed up with noodles and fines then if your not careful it gets packed in the bar rail. 4. I just popped back to catch up 🤔😉. As with every garage, the mechanics have their ways and choices. And have too guarantee their work… that’s why I said what I did before and Remember I spoke about tolerances as well. so if the ring end gap is way past it’s best and the piston is getting something near the tolerance. i agree change both at the same time, as I said time is money… change it while your in there. however.. I’ve been playing with the 038 I shoved back together with those rings .25 ring end gap ! It runs good..so will be good with new rings when I do change the rings I will measure the piston gap. So Saturday I'm hoping to run a few tanks of fuel through it one go it and get a vid or two while I'm at it. I’ve got to freehand a log into a cant. I shall take the 044 as a back up and make sure I will get to play with it. and before I go. The 044 with all that worn piston skirt pic .. I did measure the ring end gap of those rings , they were in the range .45 iirc. Which is way to big. And the skirt gap was a far bit bigger. I just wanted to show some garbage that someone said runs good.🤣 Btw this 038, I have a guy that’s interested in it, and he said put new rings in it as I’ve taken it a part.. well I’m running it hard on Saturday, and the rings are not here yet. So I guess he will get me run a tank of fuel after i install the rings
  5. It has to be bad and you have tobe unlucky. But either way a lot of peeps like to just replace things as it cost more money taking it apart again… This was a heated Handle 10mm 044, I brought for £200 in good working order…🙈🤣 after I complained 🤔 I got it for £100 🤔. Some think it wasn’t worth it, but I think it was 😉 I cleaned it all up & those main bearings got changed as they were grinding that Ali into an oily paste. and while I was there and the bearings out It got it a new all over black epoxy paint job👍 you can see in the red rings where the piston was rocking and hitting the crank at bdc on the 044 But I can say I'm not going to give a new paint job to my 038's😉 I will add a bit more to this thread when I do a bit more to the 038's 👍
  6. Just saying, Meteor pistons are the next best pistons to use other than oem.. but call me cheap, I’d check the skirts and probably put the piston in the cylinder and Also check the gap, as with most things there are tolerances… then I would then decide from there. having said this, the rocking of the piston means as it get worse it eventually gets snagged in a port then the damage can be catastrophic. But most times it comes down to not having to take it apart again because they have paid someone to do it and they want to guarantee it, Thus the time and guarantees is money in most peoples eyes, nobody is paying me, so I choose what and when I do things. that’s why I’m happy to run a saw with older rings for a while..
  7. One other thing with your oil pump leak, I had mine off and had to clean the gasket off the case. 🤔 I made a rough and ready one from a bit of gasket card and rubbed a bit of dirko on both sides. no leaks yet 🤞 I add the ipl of the oil pump, ( although you can see this on l&s when you log in). I never took my pump apart. I just cleaned the inside & shaft and the seal where the worm gear goes. I put a bit of grease on both before reassembly
  8. Good morning 😉 I was busy reassembling the one I had apart this weekend.🙄 And the 038 is now a runner.👍 the bing carb was apita cleaning the gasket under the half circle my timing numbers were exh101 trans122 int73 squish 24thou without the gasket, just dirko sealant. i think I do need some new rings as the ring end gap in the cylinder is 25thou, but I will run it for a while first. the 440 piston is not gonna work, the piston pin to crown height is different to the 038 , ask me how I know 🤣 what’s more is the rings are slightly different thickness iirc 440 1.2mm thick and 038 1.5mm one other thing make sure you don’t allow the larger crank seal prolapse and the spring pop off. if your not sure what I mean. The ridge on the crank is what makes it do it. I use a bit of thin stiff plastic to help reduce the bump.then pull it out after fitting the seal with a bit of dirko sealant around the edge.
  9. This pic shows the case half I broke (bottom of pic) because I missed a case bolt due to the crud and me being lazy 🙄 although I though I,d show the case half I split today (top of pic) and the same sort of crud as to why I missed it the first time. pits a shame but it’s not the end of the world. As I said I was gifted 3 x 038 nonrunning saws that I intend to make 2 out of
  10. The case splitting 🙈 lve done a few of my own saws like this..although I should spend about £80 to buy a China case splitter. where this was done cheap and quick with a bit of springy steel and an angle grinder to cut a slotted bit for the bar nuts. The other end is in a bench vice. It’s a shame the floor is so far away.🤫 so it’s best I don’t recommend my way to split the cases FullSizeRender.MOV
  11. Looking at your pic of the intake side piston and cylinder I’d say you do have a pto bearing problem. And the front side (exhaust) shows the air leak. lve some pics for you. And a redneck case splitting vid that will make spud cry 😉🤣👍 I think the crank on this saw is past it’s best these fag bearings seem to break & loose the plastic cage, if you look closer at the fw side you can see the crack in it where as the pto side is gone
  12. Umm. I like to read but one finger typing is crap. i like to play with saws. And share my learnings , so you mabe lucky. but I,m not on here that much as I like to play 😉👍 thease old saws… in their80's may have seen a little or a lot of use. so my advise is to change the bearings while you there doing the rest of other bits and bobs.. yes it’s a pain but it’s worth it in the long run/time as the two 038's with pto bearing problems were down to the cages holding the bearings in place seemed to be knackered and the bearings were all around one side. to change the crank seals means stripping it clutch &flywheel off and all the bits to get to them. so really it’s not that much more to split the crank… or is it. I’ve got one to do soon. I hopefully will get it on vid. My smacking it hard etc.. then once it’s sorted it will have a longer life than if I just changed the crank seals and then if a bearing was to go … you be at the same place as before . ask me about a 200t I put China bearings in 🙈 the seals were fine (026 flywheel seals) that’s why i said about simply bearings ..I’m going skf for thr 038..
  13. Arr the crudd I was cleaning the last few days.. and a few mistakes I made 🤦‍♂️ i fooked one side of a case.. the crud hid a case screw 🤬 that means one case half is well and truly knackered… I’ve helicoiled ore two other threads.. but this repairing of small 2stroke saw is something I enjoy..as a part time thing.. it helps to learn to maintain everything else. And not ruin the exspensive stuff. the fugged case one is spare parts now 🤣 🙈 I will say @Rough Hewn got me these saws and few other (junk) saws, that's a few 018's. There old monsters compared to the new 181's epa's mincie saws…
  14. I’ve got 3 038 there old 85/87s there are things wrong with all them. 2 have pto bearings gone 🤦‍♂️ i"m hoping to make 2 out of the 3, I will need some ch8nse parts but the bearings are simply 6202 & 6203, so for less than £9 for a pair from simply bearings .co.uk and choose the free delivery 👍 these are Touquey saws that need to be kept running 😉 the seals are up to you what you choose oem or farmatec they are all good. You need to fit them correctly 🤦‍♂️ ask me how I know 🙄 anyhow I saw one of the cylinders has been reduced at the base , I think it’s gonna run a bit better than the other stock ones edit… if you order the bearings, they are C3 bearings. It’s the tolerances due to the heat and everything else in a chainsaw
  15. It’s a long read… I did read most thou.. it does seem he’s trying to take you for what he can..for what I can gleam, ie extras and extras on top. the top handle saw is worrying..if that was me I’d be straight on the messaging /I’ve found your saw you forgot / left..etc.. its easy to say when my wages arnt in the equation, but I’d not be working for this guy again and cut my ties real quick . But if I did work for him I’d be extra careful.. real carful..🤔👍😉
  16. I guess your right, well that’s if you get permission to possibly trash anybodys boarder fence to the track\driveway,, if you look where I,m cutting with my 036 &20” bar you can see a very nice layered hazel f hawthorn hedge. The other way the hedges/ bushes are bigger. also the tree is limb locked to the next tree.. so-the choice is many.. I had thought of all the possibilities 😉 if I get chance to fell it . I will add here and pics..etc.. but from what I’ve heard the council TO were asked to look at the park /area.. so I will ask,,,and try and find out the TO thoughts on thread (this) said tree. And where it fits I the(council’s) priority list 🤫
  17. You can see the part numbers in the pic's Number 17 is the 260 & number 3 is the 200 and you can see they are the same dimensions
  18. I think you will find the small ms260 (flywheel side) fits and the 200t has the same both sides. there better imho, and iirc spud has recommended these in the past.
  19. It was planted many moons ago, there are whole rows of them. They were and still are wind breaks, albeit overgrown now as they were left to do there own thing by the council when they started buying the flowers from Europe as it was cheaper. Etc…. Then it was given to a group for pepper corn rent 20yrs ago. the way this whole group operate is they are on the boundary of each plot, so in effect nobody wants to deal with them there was a shed fire a few yrs ago and 4 or 5 got damaged, they stood there for quite a few yrs, then one of the plots became vacant, they then got felled. This was because the occupants on the other side didn’t want to loose 3k worth of poly tunnels, we felled them for them & got paid just to fell them. (Less than £200) because they are poor. Well they say they are etc. At the time, I said they as a whole group need to look at this problem, because one day it will happen again. So here we are… we will see what gets said in there next group meeting, now this storm damage tree is on a access road that has a lot of public and dog walkers etc. Have look at these pics.😉 the longer area marked in red is where we took out the 5 trees the smaller red circle is this latest tree the other pic is the dead trees we felled btw the whole plot of land is certified organic.. I could add more but I will leave it at this for the moment 😉 cheers for your helpful replies.
  20. Good evening all. as I'm sure there will be better peeps out there that know a lot more than I will ever know, I’m looking for some clarification on this tree, so storm Eunice is what did this, 2 large branches , the upper one being approx 16” diameter and the lower being 18” so the question is how safe is this tree now it’s lost about half of the main trunk, the tree is approx 70’ tall hopefully you can see from the pics btw, that’s a 20” bar on a 036 in the last pic cheers
  21. @Chops-c check your messages for the manual 😉 14mb hopefully it’s what you need, as it covers 050-051 / 075-076
  22. I had a skim through this thread. Well all I can say ivy is like marmite.. small amounts is ok , it’s slow growing. it will take out the slower growing trees in a wood, given 1/2 a chance. Which may well survive if it wasn’t on them. it is also a heavy load on a tree in the winter. The 1987 hurricane proved this and took out a lot of trees as they still had leaves on them. Ivy is evergreen. it will kill trees given half a chance. It will help the tree die sooner if it has other problems. If you go into a woodland area with and without ivy, you will notice the difference in the amount of light, come summer or winter. This has an effect on the other fawna & flora growth. it may be good and proved habitat & food , but like most things it needs to be curtailed at some point if it gains to much of a hold.. and most times it’s to late for the tree . so is it marmite or Vegemite, I don’t like either. But it’s not the end of the world if a little is added into a stew pot as it adds some flavour to the stew.😉
  23. Wonky

O neg 🤔 I,m good at giving 😉 but not at taking 🤔
