  1. Soon it will be mandatory for all hi vis workers to Don a helmet with a beacon installed on the top, the way h+s is going.
  2. Or dismantle what ever covers or casings and just spray it orange or something close to high vis. I worked with the council once and it shocked me that simple solutions like this would be ignored because a bloke in an office is pissed off that he didn't think of it first. Unfortunately it's a common thing in most councils.
  3. I think the people you are talking about who use the ptsd card is extremely rare, most ex soldiers are good guys wanting to work and have a good career, no one wants to fail when they leave. Some can cope, some can't, either way if you look at it if you take on an ex squadie with good character that is treated well, you will have a guy/girl on your force that will break thier back for you. Unfortunately like in any industry some people don't adjust and they can't get by, you can't collectively judge all of them because some of them have issues.
  4. Sabastian Faulks wrote birdsong, absolute master piece (again fiction) detailing what the guys went through in the trenches.
  5. I understand where you are coming from comparing ww1 soldiers to modern day counterparts, however being shot at, blown up or being caught in a situation where lives are being lost, is still traumatic, no matter how you look at it. I'm sure if we knew what we did today, with the services we have now some of those guys would have been looked after.
  6. The army does look after you more than you think while serving, once you have left it is a huge adjustment, even years down the line. While thier are charities and government agencies that do help with people's problems it takes a lot to admit you have a problem in the first place. Many of my friends have ptsd and they are under going treatment, but the "best" therapists in my opinion is each other, I chat with my army friends almost daily, mainly banter but we all relay on each other if things are getting difficult.... Either way a 100% solution is never going to exist but honestly they system does work for some.
  7. Pre course I watched vids on YouTube as the written word didn't help me. Did my course and I learned a lot, got my head in the books and practiced my knots. Post course (1+ year later) finally got my climbing kit together and I go rec climbing once a week, forgot quite a bit but getting it back with regular practice but skill fade has definately affected my climbing ability I think everyone has strengths and weaknesses but regular practice while trying different methods/kit is probably the best way to develop your climbing. As for books and guides, they are of some help but for me I need to be shown in person or watch a video clip, visualising it from word or even pictures can lead to misunderstanding It or only parts of the information sinking in.
  8. I've worn loads of different knee pads in the past for different jobs and honestly the best ones are the smaller replaceable ones that slip into the sewn in compartment in your trousers. Maybe ask a local haberdashers/tailors and see if they can fit them to your chainsaw pants. Honestly the military type ones are ok but you will spend half the day adjusting them.
  9. Every day is a school day on arbtalk, love it.
  10. Hi everyone This silverbirch has these weird growths/nests growing on it. I always thought they where nests but since learning more about trees I took a closer look and realized they arnt indeed nests, they look a bit like tumble weed but are much more corse with live twigs. I won't be doing any work on the tree as its on my grandads street but it definately has my curiosity as to what they can be and what treatment it needs.

  12. Hi guys After trying to break into the industry I've been offered a trial day with a local firm in North Wales. Things haven't been plain sailing for me (I won't drone on in a self pitying manner about my hardships) but i will say I am experienced in ground maintenance (grass cutting) and some experience assisting guys with tree work but not a great deal of hands on myself. I have over the last two yearss aquired cs30,31,38 chipper, first aid, own ground saw and climbing kit. Anyway, the guy wanting to give me a chance is not giving me a lot in the way of information about what he wants me to do, although the company has some decent contracts and he already has guys under him as self employed. He's already said he wants to see me doing mainly felling and to see me climb. Anyway I'm rambling a bit now but I need advice about starting off being self employed and what preparation I would need to take. I am absolutely petrified of keeping my own accounts (as I am dyslexic) and at the thought of failing because of my inexperience but I'm very determined to excel in this industry and I have loved working in it so far. I will try and find the advert and post it, but it may be missing now. Any advice, links or nudges in the right direction would be massively appreciated.
  13. I ordered some bits from northern arb (chains, gloves etc) and delivery was very fast. Out of interest do fuels and oils generally take longer to deliver? as I've never ordered any over the internet, I would imagine they would be a nightmare to ship.
  14. I got my cs38 around a year ago and I'm trying to get into the industry, I get a chance to cut down the odd tree but not climb (I practice myself in my own time), but honestly if it came to me rescuing someone from a tree I would only have half a clue. I'm competent at first aid but remembering the different methods of rescue and implementing them would be a problem for me and quite a few climbers I would of thought, as it is probably not practiced enough.... As for training i recently seen a climbing refresher course (basically cs38) and all proceeds went to charity (the name of the event eludes me), now if I had a climber under me and i wasn't sure of him/her or thought they could use more experience then I would dip in my pocket and send them on the course. I'm going on a bit here but at some point everyone was a newbie and looked to the "older" guys to teach and mentor them, invest in your staff and they will take care of your company.
  15. Maybe swill it, let it dry out then store some 2 stroke (if you need that much) in it. Other than that you could always sell it.
  16. Well after reading a lot of the comments I will be climbing in a few different woods around my area from now on. I liked our park as it had a nice mix of trees all at different height and it was my first climb in a while so I wanted somewhere in view of things went wrong and my lad panicked. That said I'm quite happy to go off the beaten track a bit and try a couple of other places. Thanks for the advice guys.
  17. I think I will go to the woods near me next time, the park was convinent as its a bit nearer.
  18. Hi guys, I was practicing my climbing in my local park as its been a while since I did my cs38 and want to do my cs39 next year, so I need the practice. Anyway a guy got chatting to me and said he was an ex copper and to watch out as I might get nicked for using park trees, now im not sure if that's true, or if the bloke was indeed a copper, either way where would be the best place to climb? I don't know anyone with private land so that is not an option. Any guidance would be helpful, thanks.

  20. Since we are talking about trousers what about suggestions on climbing trousers, im looking at doing my cs39 next year but I'm practicing climbing atm in a pair of shitty cargos. Again like ratman I don't want to fork out silly price but I want something half decent, any suggestions guys.
  21. I bought a roc wood (spelling might be off) pair for £50ish a while ago, they are fairly decent, obviously not as good as the pro brands but they get the job done.
  22. Interesting vids but I'll leave my field craft skills back in my army days. After some thing I can pop the lid off and get straight into it.
  23. Atm I'm quite tempted to go get a staney flask, lifetime warranty if you buy from Thier store in America. Only problem is that Thier food storers are bonk (reviews) . Thanks so far guys, definitely have food for thought, pun intended
  24. Any idea what the flask is called?
