  1. I'm trying to avoid getting an accountant until 2018 (when my first tax return will be due), so will just turn up with all my income/spends and receipts all in order good to go for a return; as opposed pay for him or her to punch data into a spreadsheet! Plus i'm a labour only SC mainly so my financial circumstances are pretty simple; get paid and buy shiny tree kit!
  2. Hi guys, I'm just making up some spreadsheets to track my income/expenditure and have a question regarding my property income I get from renting it out. In terms of a tax return, do i just put all my income/offset able expenditure down or does it have to be categorized into Arb/Landlord finances? Thanks.
  3. To clarify, I have the level 3 diploma and BTI but wouldn't feel confident attempting PTI yet.
  4. From what I hear people don't pass PTI without a lot of background knowledge, so maybe 3 day course, but a lot of experience to pass it!
  5. I think you have you wires crossed a bit. Some people (Glendale for example) ask for an academic level 3 qualification in Arboriculture for their surveyors, eg "City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture". The above award is pretty entry level though, and I think PTI/experience would hold a lot more weight.
  6. And @Departed mate, that pay for your experience is borderline extortion. You realise minimum wage is going up to £8.50 in just over a year? I think you need to have a serious chat with your employer and other tree gangs in the area.
  7. Thanks, as opposed to BFSC (turning up with van, crew etc..) Labour only would still include PPE and saws/fuel thought, right?
  8. To be honest I carry 10m (i think its 7mm dynamic) because I have two mountaineering ropes, one is 60m the other is 10m... so its a no brainer! 10m means I can emergency absail down 5 metre crags if I need to get off the hill in a hurry/shit vis, can't do that with slings.
  9. I love Snowdonia, favorite walk is Crib Goch to Snowdon summit from Pen y Pass. There are some nicer smaller walks as you mentioned by the Devils Kitchen mind. In the Lakes I love the Langsdale Pikes area, Jack's Rake is a really manageable but exciting scramble; I once had to belay an RAF cadet instructor over an exposed section.... goes to show always carry 10metres of rope and never rely on the RAF for anything outside of the office
  10. Lightweight, I'm probably 120 with my gear on
  11. Hmm, not sure then, I guess different types of cord make a huge difference. Knut is working for me, but going to check out the Moachan (sp?) later.
  12. What cord/climbing line are you using? If a distel is going slack then I'd make the assumption your hitch cord is to thick, I find the distel is the worst offender for binding.
  13. You'll always get people undercutting others, just replace your Portugese mates with Mr "I'll do it for the wood". I see your point Matelot but in the scheme of things if we kicked out every EU citizen we would feel it sorely, and yes you might open up a few more building jobs, but when you get sucked into a cement mixer there will be no nurses to help you when you get to hospital!
  14. Also bill you still a bit fresh from your Saturday night out?
  15. Had a play with the knut this morning, perfect! Using 10mm cord on 13mm rope and its still a nice small hitch that doesnt bind up when my full 100kg is on the rope (through a pulley) and bites every time! Thanks guys!
  16. Using the triple attachment, although I'm yet to use the third loop for positioning ( just use my lanyard) so might just be a waste of space.
  17. Problem shared is a problem solved, glad to hear others have issues and it's not just me being thick! I think I'll have a play with a knut hitch, I don't like having to dress a hitch to get it to bite, makes me uneasy in the tree if I slip/branch snap etc.. To be fair lads looks like I'm putting a zigzag on my christmas list
  18. Not sure exact length, as I've been using a 2m cord to test different wrap/braid combos and fishermanning the ends. No matter how many wraps/braids I do, it doesnt bite when i'm doing a footlock ascent.
  19. Thanks for all the replies. Yeah I had a play with that setup Timon, it's a bit fiddly, because I like the HC close once I'm up in the tree!
  20. Hey Steve, yeah I'm happy with the hand over hand, then using free hand to pull the slack through: my issue is it wont bite without me tending the knot, and at that point I've ran out of hands Yeah I think I just need to practice and test the VT a bit more, it's just a very long knot.. only advice has been reading stuff on here.
  21. I'm on marlow gecko too, I'm using 9mm cord for my VT and I've done all I could to wear it in. When I dress it it works fine, it's just when it self tends on the pully it won't bite.
