  1. update now I've actually spent a few days on poles, rather than in front of my computer googling setups! I choke my mainline around the stem with a pulley so its easy to flip up with your flip line. I then just have my standard drt friction hitch that's always on my rope (I use the knut), and tie off a fig 8 device underneath it. Fig 8 stops the hitch binding up when loaded with ky weight and allows quick descent to next work position (having a long tail on the choked off line then means it falls down to you easily because of the pulley.
  2. hey, how would go about calculating the load on a speedline? Its somewhere inbetween a snatch (worst case 11 x load) and a dynamic standard rigging setup (3 x load). I've been watching some August hinkie videos and he speedlines some serious weight. Zoom to the last 1/4 of the video and you see him chunking down easily 3-400 kg sections. Is there a HSE backed equation for speedline loads? I passed my CS41 today so naturally the next step is speed lining 1/2 a ton of timber over someone's house
  3. out of interest, does anyone ever get approached for planting advice/work in urban areas? There certainly seems to be more felling than planting!
  4. Thanks guys, I found them and reset them, then used pliers to line them up with the squares and tightened them right up with a fresh bar on. Those "wings" on the oil flow cover aren't really touching the bolts so I crimped them back in a bit, I'll be more mindful of how the studs work in future, I assumed they where screwed into the crank case and wouldn't just push through! Thanks again!
  5. I shook the saw a bit to get the bar through the bolts so I could get the chain off the sproket, as it's outboard, no more than arm strength. Once to watch in future, or even better don't start a job at 4pm in November
  6. I'll get right on it, is this a "common" occurrence? When I find them I just wiggle them back in and then once re tightened they are pretty much good to go?
  7. Hey, Made a rookie mistake this evening, had to fell a standing stem of an Ash Tree I did over the weekend. Should have left it as I was chasing light as it was, finally got it on the ground and went to cross cut a few bits (was dark by this point). Long story short, saw was too small, it was too dark and I got the bar stuck, so I took off the bar and chain (and that took a bit of persuasion due to the outboard clutch) and packed up and went home. Just went to put my spare bar on the saw ready to cut my stuck bar out tomorrow and notice both my bar studs are missing! I was under the impression that they have square bolt ends that can't be removed out of the saw... only further into it. I'm pretty confused, i've checked the oil tank and can't see anything, want to check I'm not being stupid before I go back up with a torch!
  8. Hey Guys, Has anyone registered Self-Employed recently, did mine online nearly a month ago and still not got my UTR though? Thanks, Mark
  9. Took out a BT wire today, rigged a couple of big sections beforehand so told the guy on the ground to let them run a bit. He then let the smaller section right above the BT line run... as in free-fall, straight through it. Oops. Luckily we know the client really well and attached it back to the house easily. My fault for not briefing properly!
  10. So you can just clip in to the length you need Grunt? That makes almost too much sense....
  11. Awesome video, kind of blows my day out of the water... I did my first dismantle today of a 15 metre Common Ash!
  12. I've been considering this a while, would be interested to see how you get on! Sounds like your winter project is crying for a thread/blog?
  13. but then you have to untie it to descend and set it back up again? With a running knot with long tail you can just retrieve the block down to your next cut? its what I do with my safety line, undo lanyard, fig 8 down to next cut, lanyard around, retrieve safety line to me and redress the prussik then good to go.
  14. reviving this thread... I find with cow and timber hitches its a bit of a balls to untie it, descend and retie. Does anyone else use a running bowline with a 4-5 ft tail so the block can be quickly retrieved from below and re choked off ? It seems the better way to do it but I assume there's a reason why people don't?
  15. I went for the subtler option and basically said that I don't think CIS is applicable and they are going to ask HMRC, so should be good! I try to leave court appearances for unpaid speeding tickets
  16. Yeah, they said it was so they could deduct my tax and pay it to HMRC. I said that the work wasn't construction related and they said that all contractors get their tax deducted. And sorry yes, Prime Contractor, still getting used to the lingo! The only reason I can see for them having to apply CIS to my case is if the company turns over £1 million in construction related activities, which they don't, they do some construction related activities (land clearance) but I was planning on invoicing the CIS stuff separately. What would be the best way to proceed, I've already had the "This isn't CIS applicable" comeback turned away? Thanks as always Kevin, you are a foundation of knowledge!
  17. Yeah, I'm happy with CIS. This work was all domestic tree work, nothing to do with construction. I have done some CIS work for this employer in the past (site clearance), and have invoiced it as such.
  18. You guys mention price reflecting if you bring a saw or not, how much on average (bracket if you want to) would you put on top of your rate for providing a saw (not including the fuel it'll use)
  19. Thanks Inoff, I'll track my property income/allowed expenditure separately.
  20. Evening, I just sent my first sub-contracting invoice and my employer has asked for my UTR so they can deduct my taxes. None of the work on the invoice was Construction related therefore I assumed I would be getting gross payment. I've invoiced CIS work separately. Is my employer getting their wires crossed or are there other situations where a sub-contractor will have their deductions made by the employer? It's not the end of the world, it means i nice tax rebate, but I'd rather track/manage my own taxes. Thanks.
  21. Here is the qualification guidance (criteria you'll be tested against). https://www.nptc.org.uk/assets/documents/2334e033425f4f5e9523647263601640.pdf There is some other stuff here on the NPTC page, but 39 is fairly simple. Know your cuts, two anchor in points and keep both hands on the saw! https://www.nptc.org.uk/qualificationschemedetail.aspx?id=350 Good luck!
