  1. This question is mainly directed at the full time tree crews, what size saws are you running as your main ground saw, ie the saw you use the most. I'd rather leave brand out of it as we get off subject pretty fast, I have a very old beat up 66cc stihl 038 that is too heavy and not reliable enough for the job so at the moment I want to get a 50cc series (probably 261/560) as my main saw, is this too small? I know a lot of guys run 372s (70cc) as their main saws, is that a bit overkill on lopping and processing?
  2. I even had my spiced eye tend my distel hitch the other day, I was using the top connection point on the pulley though, safest to use the middle one.
  3. Will these replace the UA modules or be required in addition? Is there a timeline (I am doing my UA modules within the year so would be nice to know if it's best to hold out). Thanks!
  4. Not out in West Wales yet, saw a few smaller ones out in Plymouth last week and the bigger ones were thinking about it.
  5. Yeah, I have to put my biner straight onto my bridge rather than use one of the rings because of the way the hitchclimber sits, i'm 90 deg out using the rings, which is annoying and means I'm always being pulled to the left whilst thrusting up the trunk.
  6. This looks much better than the swivel I have, smaller and another plane! I think I'll try and grab a refund on the rockerotica one I bought and replace it with this, I was just trying to be cheap!
  7. Even close to the stem they are very useful, I use one foot to hold me out from the stem and the other to ascend. With the hitch climber its self tending too so all your hands need to do is keep you upright.
  8. Thanks guys, I'm going to have a better play with it today. I do like how compact the Distel stays compared to the VT, I find that for every full thrust/footlock on a VT I sagged back down about 10 cm (due to it's makeup), but the Distel binds right away. I was thinking of a 3 wrap VT, just assumed that it would'nt bite as well as the 4 wrap, I'm 6ft 4 and 16 stone, prussicks tend slightly for me when I don't want them to so...
  9. Good evening! I picked up an eye to eye the other day to use as part of my hitchclimber setup, I got a 10mm 70cm one as I read somewhere that it was a good size, they must have been talking about an 8mm one or to be used on an 11.5 rope (I'm using 13). It's not long enough for a VT but I can just about get a Distel tied with it, what are the differences/pros and cons between the two knots? I've had a little climb on the distel and it seems to work just fine, but then I've not used a VT enough to compare it with.. should I pick up a longer eye to eye or is the distel well used and effective?
  10. I bent the only allen key I have handy that fits
  11. Hey geys, I want to add a swivel to my harness bridge, any tips on how to undo the locktighted shackles to slip a swivel on? Only tried and tested method seems to be direct heat, but I don't want to put 250degreesC anywhere near my harness. Only other option seems to be attaching it via a biner, but I'm trying to keep the amount of "gubbins" on my bridge to a minimum (swivel acting as an attachment point for my hitchclimber and one ring for work positioning/rescues) Thanks in advance!
  12. Would I be right in thinking that because foot ascenders are not life support they don't need to be CE approved? Seen a few from China and the like that seem to mirror the petzl range for 1/4 of the price... ... then again it might be cheaper to buy a decent one and not trash my rope...
  13. That's not a bad idea. Only trouble with the grigri is the lever can easily get caught up in a mess of biners/equipment/other lines... But its a lot stronger and tidier than a prussik for sure. Thanks
  14. I'm on above a line that I flip up along with my steel core.
  15. Is that the CS100?
  16. Hi guys, I'm on my CS38 at the moment, just done the spiking day. Just wanted to ask what your favoured setups are for your backup line (for those that use one!) We are using a running bowline to choke our secondary line around the stem and have a prussik attached to arrest in a fall, all my climbing (mountaineering) knowledge so far has taught me to never ever trust just a single prussik holding your weight so just wondered what other systems people use? I'll admit that the above method does make it easy to flip your secondary line up with your flip line though, maybe I should just man up. THANKS
  17. Interesting read: https://www.forestryjournal.co.uk/media/uploads/cat-274/battery-powered-saw-comparison-essentialarb-november.pdf
  18. When you say 5-6 do you mean trees or limbs? I can't see me doing all that much top handle stuff when starting out, so might be a more cost effective solution in the short term..
  19. I wouldn't consider Makita in the 2 stroke world, but Makita aren't a bad make in terms of other power tools. My Makita drill and circular saw easily compete with my DeWalt variants, might be one to watch.
  20. [ame=https://www.amazon.co.uk/Makita-DUC302Z-Cordless-Li-ion-Chainsaw/dp/B00M215BO0#productDetails]Makita DUC302Z Cordless 36 V Li-ion Chainsaw: Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools[/ame] Anyone had any experience of this? I only ask as I already have some other Makita cordless tools so battery synergy would be nice, for the price I might just try it out and cut my losses!
  21. White folk were killing white folk in Europe long before anyone from the "third world" showed up.
  22. I'm doing my training with Lynher at the moment, can't rate them highly enough! Good variety of instructors from different backgrounds.
  23. Ah okay, makes sense. Thanks for the replies, this won't be up and running until Novemberish anyway so just at the planning stages. Thanks!
  24. How can I pay upfront for a year I don't know how much I'll earn/purchase tax offset able items? Do they just anticipate it will be the same?
  25. I'm not going to be VAT registered, just as SE I'll have a tax bill each year, so really need to keep 20% of everything I make to one side? I'm new to all this so I don't have the history to be able to forsee how much I'll be able to offset against my tax bill each year.
