  1. OP is the owner, neighbour and also going to do the work, so a friendly contractor knocking on the door isn't going to happen.... though can appreciate not seeing the neighbours face might show a different side to her personality ("Sure, help yourselves, that's the best gate to use" type of answer) - sometimes a contractor can soothe things in all lines of work (don't do public facing jobs without learning some people skills). OP doesn't say if things are down to legal letters yet, but sounds like a note through her door saying when the work will happen is going to open op another level of problems apart from the tree. My thoughts are, yes, should be OK if everything stays your side, no damages and so on as planned. What happens though if something unexpected happens? - Dropped kit on her side, (hope not) an accident and so on, is the relationship still OK that she would see sense "Dropped a rope, just picking it up" type of thing?
  2. Yes. Simple answer. Consider that to dry the insides of a log the moisture has to travel through the outer layers to the surface and evaporate. As the surface dries the moisture moves outwards to make it all equal inside. The reverse is also true that to make a log wet then the rain water has to go in reverse. It is a slow process. If you make the journey shorter for the moisture than it will get to the surface and evaporate quicker. However what moisture content you get to depends on a lot - how wet the wood was in September (so how long it has been split for), the species (denser wood is harder for the moisture to travel), where you stack them, and if they get any wind blowing through the stack (wind blows the moist air away, drier air makes it easier to evaporate into) Also note that if the logs were dry in September then it is likely that only the outer 1/2" will be wet, the inner of the log will still be dry, covering the stack in a windy location might be all you need to do - for this years wood - for next winters wood I would just leave it as it is
  3. I guess a happy idiot all the same?
  4. House building is another thing - I like your thinking though, build 660,000 houses nearer to Birmingham and then there is no need for faster trains for those in a hurry to get there. Round here the houses they build are all wrong, this morning I have passed 4 new build states built full of executive homes, double and triple garages, more toilets than bedrooms, balconies... in fact I guess the very opposite of what is needed to sustain a rental market and what is needed for young people to get on the housing ladder.
  5. To be fair, I've had worse and if we didn't have thick skin we shouldn't be online really - I read my comment again and yes, easy to mistake it if you didn't see the reference
  6. Not at all... the reference was to Marks tag line above "talking Bollocks since 1968" - he was doing fantastic football things a lifetime ago - and kept on doing them ever since
  7. 86 years old... "Talking Bollocks since 1968".. which was when he won the European cup!
  8. Ahh, I should have been a bit clearer - not the amount per charge but in total over time, are you going to be using this saw daily until the motor gives out or use it a couple of times a year to prune the trees in the garden. Every day use and I can understand wanting to reduce costs but once every so often then buying a new litre or 2 of oil will be a rare thing
  9. For a little saw like this, how much oil are you expecting to use?
  10. Straight after they said "Targeted the hospital because of the bunkers" - words to that effect, then later "didn't do it" and later "Came from within Gaza" - it would appear that they are doing the social media for both sides with this one. Someone knows where the missile came from, probably lots of someones, since I reckon this is within the top 2 conflicts being studied in detail, in real time, from space and on the ground, from around the world. Someones arn't releasing that information (probably to hide what they can find out), but I reckon someone else has had a bit of a telling off on the telephone.
  11. You're probably more qualified to comment than a lot of us, depends on the news source, the reporters or the daily news that you read depends on whose partisan views of this conflict you believe. I don't think we are getting fed an even balance from both sides (The BBC might be - they are certainly trying hard to be seen to be unbiased here). For the hospital - if you take it that there are underground facilities and that Israel has a substation arsenal at it's disposal, any attack on there would be against these underground facilities I think... and yet the pictures and videos don't show it having been hit with anything more powerful than a firework. My view is that the missile wasn't targeted at it, or that someone has been playing the politics of war on their own side (Hamas or one of the other factions there)
  12. Just going to be gossipy here but a renowned farmer type, can do anything with anything, great interpersonal skills demonstrated, probably spends a lot at the dealers (farmer supplies stores). A new part as a good will gesture, probably should make that profit back quick enough in keeping the sales and 20%? off a new saw next year, so the dealer gets another sale (making, what 5 to 10% now?).. plus extras ("So sir will be wanting a couple of chains too, I'll take 5% off each for you if you take them now, will you want a spare bar just in case just now too? lets take a little discount off that. Right and while you are in, you'd better get some 2 stroke oil, sorry I can't discount that.. right I'll put that through - you'll be picking them up in half an hour, grand"). Regardless of the honesty you don't stay in business giving stuff away for nothing or at a loss. Dealer will be as trustworthy as any.
  13. Certainly very messed up situation and I think the only way to get peace in the region is a lot of outside forces going in to break it up, and then years of peace keeping forces. If Hamas want to be seen as a legitimate government - which would help their case to the rest of the world - building bunkers under hospitals is not the action of a government. Likewise Israel needs to give them a chance, to come out and govern openly without fear. Both sides need to step back a bit and say 'lets be all grown up now'. However I don't think it stops there, Egypt and the other Arab states all have a part to play and the rest of the world do too.... but the first step perhaps is the rest of the world to step in and bang some heads together (simply put). Might be wondering why it is our problems... look at the map, the borders are created by a ruler and a ruler, the straight edges were dictated by the Europeans and that is one of the many historical problems in the region.. one of many problems. The US are creating a force to go in to assist Israel in todays news, but I don't think that will ease the situation, perhaps make Israel bolder in their actions. Suspect their involvement will grow till some one mentions Afghanistan or Vietnam (especially since Putin is also trying to solve things, egg on US faces if Putin does that.... so US will become more and more involved). Just my thoughts anyway
  14. However, if dried it will all still burn OK
  15. Looks tempting though, sell what I have here, buy outright, have some cash left over (the 30k one, not the million). I know a lot of guys working in the city (UK) here who will commute for more than an hour, an hours drive to work? Nothing to them. (I have to show face in work a couple of days a month, back to back if I want, so -could- live anywhere in the world really, just so long as I can get those 2 days in, have a hotel overnight - I guess you could live in the sticks in Sweden and do the same.. till the winter hits and you can't commute long distance so easily)
  16. Last time it was this high it took about 20 years to reduce it to a more sensible level.
  17. Some places will, talk to the local tree surgeons near you. I have one who had a yard to tip in, let me have access as and when (I think he had problems, has since locked the gate at nights), but was a mix of softwoods, with the occasional hard wood thrown in. Another has a yard and charges something to fill up a car or will deliver for another charge - got to know who is local to you (not everyone uses this suite either)
  18. Yup, the tip site is a good tool, as mentioned above, generally those who often work in the area have sorted out what to do with the waste. Those who only occasionally work in the area need somewhere to tip.. so what you can get depends very much on who is working locally. Chainsaws however are hard to hide once they are running, you can hear them, and a lunchtime walk around (at least here) 1 day a month I can hear one going - suppose that would be within 1 mile of the house - if you aren't disturbing the work a quiet word can get you results. The other option is to talk to the local tree surgeons directly, they might make a note of where you are and if your house is between their job and their regular tip they might detour to you - especially on a big job with more than 1 truck load of logs to take away (if you save 1/2 hour round trip it might be worth it, they can do the job and finish early for the day). It works if what you have benefits them as well and if what you have is a nice bottle of wine or 2, a few beers or a handful of fivers then so be it.
  19. ... you mentioned them first and their abilities... ( a quick English Language comprehension lession "Despite their breeding" was a comment on their parents (you) and "the kids are competent" was the comment about the children which is no way derogatory )
  20. You need an early nght I suspect if that is tonights best example of the shining whit we come to expect from you. "Despite their breeding, my kids are surprisingly competent at presenting data in a clear and concise way"
  21. Here is an interesting graphic. I'll apologise, I've been using excel to annotate it to make it clearer, also from the commons library. Covid hasn't happened by the end of the chart Pre-covid total government debts
  22. If one was to only read a one sided press rather than broadly reading, they might have a skewed view of the world. Similarly if one was to only comment on crimes so long as criminal only matched a criteria then the narrative they want to create is as equally unbalanced as their reading. So in the interest of balance.... here is a White Scottish man who is also a murderer. Quite brutal too as it happens. It happens... (going for 5 and 6 tonight (see the post a week or so ago) 5. Monopolising conversations 6. Impatient, angry, unhappy, depressed or has mood swings when criticized ) Man pleads guilty to murder of woman in Aberdeen - Police Scotland WWW.SCOTLAND.POLICE.UK Police Scotland Aberdeen North East murder Christopher Cook Jacqueline Kerr
  23. thought they were also getting a nice healthy £350 million a week extra bonus too
  24. If you are trying to get the forum to bite then you are failing miserably I think. As I said above they are generally a good crowd here, and so far apart from being curious what you did to the saw have shown no malice... however the other way around..... Glad to see you have a resolution that sounds pretty good to me.. and now you have that, perhaps you could treat us to story time and tell us what you did in the first place (I assume from the defensive -embaressed sounding- nature it was more than just forgetting the 2 stroke oil - which to be honest most people will have done at some time)
