  1. Thats a good point. Thankfully the Oak I get off the local estate has very little movement in it. Cutting at 3-4m has yet to be an issue but I can see cutting at 5.7 could be. He knows they'll be green so what happens after they leave my yard is of no interest to me. But ensuring they remain straight whilst I still have them will be. I've milled 60 off 6"x6"x5.7m Norway Spruce Beams (so far) for my log cabin and very few if any have moved in the last 6-12 months they've been stickered. Hopefully the oak will remain the same. If the Oak moves then I'll just keep them and mill til I get a good one, or however many he needs.
  2. Im sure many of you have a figure in your head in cubic foot or cubic meter when quoting and I tend to stick to this regardless if its 2.5m or 4.8m but do any of you add a premium for over 4.8m? I'm being asked to quote for 5.7m Oak beams and wonder what additional premium I should ask for lengths as long as this?
  3. I dont agree. Its a nice steady income for the common man who lives a somewhat frugal lifestyle but pennies if you're used to living a middle to upper class lifestyle.
  4. Ive heard about these kinds of issues with Larch often and have yet to experience any of them. Saying that Ive milled under 50 tons so only just starting out with it but so far I must have got lucky. I do go through bands more than I would do with Oak, but not any more than I would if I was milling Spruce.
  5. That’s chicken feed though. An average Joe would lead a fairly boring existence on that in London.
  6. They searched for him for something like 12 hours. Thats some serious Cowboy Stretch in the Sack-store if he never actually fell off. All very odd, I guess I'll get the latest from the rumor mill tomorrow.
  7. Going to admit you where wrong then Eggs? 'Gaslighting' my Arse. You really are one of a kind I'll give you that. And nice goal post move yet again Eggers. What a plonker.
  8. Funnily enough it was a sister rig to the Jack-up Im on just now, both owned by Valaris. Past by here within the last 24 hours on tow to Dundee. Last report/wisper I heard is they've found him and he was on-board all along? Bit odd.
  9. What is it ex-PM's normally after? Money. There will be loads of it sloshing around just now. Always follow the money.
  10. Eggs, you're asking me to post my tax return on this page. I suggested we keep it via PM and you then stated that no, I had agreed to post it on this page and not via PM. I stated my recollection of posting on this page differs from yours and somehow you think you've proven your point by digging out the actual post where I state I'll PM you my tax return. Are you on drugs again????
  11. Thats gotta be worth milling then. You're gonna have to start somewhere and that sounds like an ideal size to get you up and running. Less weight in the slabs for hand-balling out too.
  12. You'll have to quote the conversation. I dont remember it going quite like that.
  13. I doubt anyone here cares. Just PM it to me and I'll do likewise.
  14. Just a regular tape measure or an OD tape?
  15. Patience there old man. And of course you'll have yours ready to compare, right? Surely you dont expect me to show you mine if you're no gonna show me yours?
  16. Who's claiming some of your meagre contributions? You've answered that yourself Eggs. Its the 50% of households that are not contributing Income Tax. Its clearly not this supposed Skilled worker on £40k a year that we've been discussing. Do keep up old chap.
  17. Someone on £40k is a net contributor of income tax. If and when they claim child benefit they are recovering a portion of the tax they have paid in. They certainly are not claiming any of your meagre tax contributions. Why should only those who do not contribute to income tax be allowed to benefit from it? Seems a very odd stance to take. Im sure you’ve mentioned before that you al least had a son?
  18. I get child benefit paid from Norway, according to your argument Im not paid enough.
  19. So they are earning a relatively good wage then? They will be income tax contributors, not a drain. I really dont see what your point is here? If they are not happy with that wage they can negotiate a wage rise or leave. Same as its ever been.
  20. If they are as skilled as you imply they will be paid enough. If they are not then they can apply to a company paying more in line with what their supposed skillset demands. Or do you mean they are easily replaceable minimum wage drones with no paperwork to back up their supposed skills?
  21. If they're so skilled perhaps they should start their own business from the ground up and instead of flying around in a Chopper dole it all out to the workers who did not dare take the effort and risk themselves.
  22. Its what I charge anyway. Ive heard similar prices from other members here as well. If its so much perhaps you should get into milling as well.
  23. I dont know a single person who would be willing to rent out their kit. Far to much of a risk of killing the saw, knackering a couple of £100 chains or even damaging the Mill. You could find a second hand set-up for the cost of two days Milling. I just sold my 60" Panther Mill & 084 Saw for £1350. The op would then have all the time in the world to learn how to Mill his Beech and hopefully know enough not to kill the saw the first time using it.
  24. Ban Mark J from his accountant?
  25. Thankyou for the in depth review. That seals it for me, I'll not be getting the Norwood.
