  1. So I threw a 2m Oak log on the Mill after mounting it on the Trailer for a trial run. It had ring shake so paid about £15 for the log. Was a bit of rot but still managed to get a few 2" x 8" and a nice 8" x 8" beam outta the heart.
  2. May I ask what he's charging? Oh, and some mate.
  3. Damn, they are not cheap! What do you use that for? Some good suggestions there. Thank you. I'll have to have a look at that website. Was hoping to not have the metal fasteners on show. I guess I could always plug the holes after?
  4. Your ifor? I’ll give them a try, cheers. I’ve used them in the past for classic car insurance. Here’s a few pics. A simple yet secure solution. the first pic is from the company but by the time the Trailer got to me they had modified it a bit as seen in the second pic. Tested it out today and worked very well.
  5. As the Mill is now mobile I guess I really should get it insured. I dont use it for work, I dont have a company so I cant see how I can insure it going down that route. Any suggestions how Id go about insuring it? Could it be put on the House Insurance?
  6. So Ive had the Trailer for a couple of months now and finally got the time, and the Teli-Handler to get the Mill Mounted. Will give it its first trial run tomorrow.
  7. Cheers. How would it be held in place? Im also not sure of the dimentions, ie if it would be the same width etc.
  8. Oooh, sounds like a good idea but I'm struggling to visualize it.
  9. Thats stunning! Lovely work. Unfortunately I do not know anyone who builds furniture. Would the below idea's work? As you mention the only issue is having to glue it all together. ?
  10. What about a 2cm tennon plus 2x1/2” dowels at each end? Ie, not 90ddgrees to the beam but on the ends parallel. Or is this just a stupid idea?
  11. So Ive hit a bit of a boo boo. The Boards (I dont know the correct term)I have for connecting the Foot Boards to the Head Boards are too short. Its not like I cut them to short, its the length the Log was cut to when I got it. So I Boards need to be 200cm long for the mattress to fit. But the Boards are only 204cm long. Ideally Id need them to be 212cm for the Tennons so they'd match the Head and Foot Boards. Is there any tricks I could use to salvage this? Or should I start looking for new stock? I have some 2"x8" Oak Boards that I milled in the start if the year and has been drying since. Would that be a big no-no to use? Ive not even bothered checking the moisture content as I dont see the point yet. Any suggestions are most welcome.
  12. Thats a lovely bit of kit! That would have knocked my sanding time from two days to a few hours! And ditto the workshop, its lovely and amazingly tidy!
  13. Damn, I should have come to you and asked if you had any for sale. Ive now bought some Walnut Dowels I'll see how they look compared to the Oak ones I already have. Thanks for the complement. Its big old chunky stuff though, so no real finesse. Still, very satisfying.
  14. Anit that the truth! Its bloody heavy.
  15. Yes, Ikea Kingsize. The idea being when she grows up and moves out she'll have a bed she can still use. Thats assuming she likes it.
  16. Hmmm, Im in two minds now. On one hand I just want it to be finished and look great in her room as a surprise. Plus she's bound to spill tea and food over it over a 12 month period and would require breaking down again and hauling to the garage for a further sanding then oiling. On the other hand I wanna do it 100% right. But if oiling in now is not going to have too much of an adverse affect then I think think I'll final sand and Oil now.
  17. OK that sounds like a plan, I'll do that.
  18. Ah damn. I was really hoping to have it 100% Finished. But I guess its best to follow your advice and I appreciate it. In what way would it ruin it? Would the Oil stop the wood properly drying out and start to rot the wood from the inside out?
  19. Ok, I'll follow that then. A Contrasting coloured wood sounds like a great idea. Greenheart would be great but I have no way of turning it down into Dowels.
  20. Thats a good tip, cheers. How much would you off-set by? 1mm? 2mm? Also, as I have a 1/2" Dowel what size of Drill Bit Should I use? 1/2" as well? I did plan on leaving the Pegs proud. I have a mate who's an Oak Framer and he does this. He explained to me that back in the day the Pegs where always cut flush but as the Green Oak dried the pegs stood proud and thats now the look everyone wants and expects. But here it will actually be a practical reason as well.
  21. I think it’s just a case of getting stuck in. Measure twice, still cut wrong and try again. Watch a few YouTube vids and ask loads of questions. The right tools makes a world of difference too.
  22. Watching my fingers is fully ingrained! [emoji16] There’s an insane number of pinch points on a Drill Floor. I really like working with wood, one of the reasons for getting the Mill. To take a felled log and turn it into a finished piece of furniture is quite satisfying.
  23. Ooooh! Good point! I know Oak stains badly with Steel, but I did not think it would bleed out of felled Oak. I’ll just leave them then. Out if interest how does stainless steel affect oak?
  24. Are you suggesting using it for a year untreated and then add a finish in 12 months time? I was planning on doing a final sanding then applying. Danish Oil. Would that be a no-no?
