  1. Cheers. How would it be held in place? Im also not sure of the dimentions, ie if it would be the same width etc.
  2. Oooh, sounds like a good idea but I'm struggling to visualize it.
  3. Thats stunning! Lovely work. Unfortunately I do not know anyone who builds furniture. Would the below idea's work? As you mention the only issue is having to glue it all together. ?
  4. What about a 2cm tennon plus 2x1/2” dowels at each end? Ie, not 90ddgrees to the beam but on the ends parallel. Or is this just a stupid idea?
  5. So Ive hit a bit of a boo boo. The Boards (I dont know the correct term)I have for connecting the Foot Boards to the Head Boards are too short. Its not like I cut them to short, its the length the Log was cut to when I got it. So I Boards need to be 200cm long for the mattress to fit. But the Boards are only 204cm long. Ideally Id need them to be 212cm for the Tennons so they'd match the Head and Foot Boards. Is there any tricks I could use to salvage this? Or should I start looking for new stock? I have some 2"x8" Oak Boards that I milled in the start if the year and has been drying since. Would that be a big no-no to use? Ive not even bothered checking the moisture content as I dont see the point yet. Any suggestions are most welcome.
  6. Thats a lovely bit of kit! That would have knocked my sanding time from two days to a few hours! And ditto the workshop, its lovely and amazingly tidy!
  7. Damn, I should have come to you and asked if you had any for sale. Ive now bought some Walnut Dowels I'll see how they look compared to the Oak ones I already have. Thanks for the complement. Its big old chunky stuff though, so no real finesse. Still, very satisfying.
  8. Anit that the truth! Its bloody heavy.
  9. Yes, Ikea Kingsize. The idea being when she grows up and moves out she'll have a bed she can still use. Thats assuming she likes it.
  10. Hmmm, Im in two minds now. On one hand I just want it to be finished and look great in her room as a surprise. Plus she's bound to spill tea and food over it over a 12 month period and would require breaking down again and hauling to the garage for a further sanding then oiling. On the other hand I wanna do it 100% right. But if oiling in now is not going to have too much of an adverse affect then I think think I'll final sand and Oil now.
  11. OK that sounds like a plan, I'll do that.
  12. Ah damn. I was really hoping to have it 100% Finished. But I guess its best to follow your advice and I appreciate it. In what way would it ruin it? Would the Oil stop the wood properly drying out and start to rot the wood from the inside out?
  13. Ok, I'll follow that then. A Contrasting coloured wood sounds like a great idea. Greenheart would be great but I have no way of turning it down into Dowels.
  14. Thats a good tip, cheers. How much would you off-set by? 1mm? 2mm? Also, as I have a 1/2" Dowel what size of Drill Bit Should I use? 1/2" as well? I did plan on leaving the Pegs proud. I have a mate who's an Oak Framer and he does this. He explained to me that back in the day the Pegs where always cut flush but as the Green Oak dried the pegs stood proud and thats now the look everyone wants and expects. But here it will actually be a practical reason as well.
  15. I think it’s just a case of getting stuck in. Measure twice, still cut wrong and try again. Watch a few YouTube vids and ask loads of questions. The right tools makes a world of difference too.
  16. Watching my fingers is fully ingrained! [emoji16] There’s an insane number of pinch points on a Drill Floor. I really like working with wood, one of the reasons for getting the Mill. To take a felled log and turn it into a finished piece of furniture is quite satisfying.
  17. Ooooh! Good point! I know Oak stains badly with Steel, but I did not think it would bleed out of felled Oak. I’ll just leave them then. Out if interest how does stainless steel affect oak?
  18. Are you suggesting using it for a year untreated and then add a finish in 12 months time? I was planning on doing a final sanding then applying. Danish Oil. Would that be a no-no?
  19. I hope so. I’m gonna fire in some 1.5” panel pins. Better than nothing I guess? On the headboard I’ll also splatter some glue on as well. Obviously I can’t do that on the footboard. But any other suggestions are welcome.
  20. Ok, I’ll do that then. Two Dowels per side. Managed to get the Footboard mocked up. Came out ok I think? Just had time to sand the side beams then i had to go mow the lawn then get the dinner on. ?
  21. Just glue the Tennons as in where my finger is? The idea being it will bash apart later? I’ve cut these 200x35mm beans for the mistress. Will screw a batton on the inside and I’m not sure what to use for slats yet? The wife says pine as it will have some give. Think that will work ok?
  22. Thanks for the Tip Les, three was the plan. Any and all advice is welcome as Im sure I'll still find a way of screwing it up. Where would you use the glue? I was hoping to not use glue so it can be broken down again when my daughter moves out. Even the Headboard and Posts is heavier than I can comfortably carry, especially up the stairs.
  23. Cheers Les. Yes, I had planned on using Dowels and have already bought a few meters of 1/2" and 3/8" (to see what looks best) But Ratmans dual Dowel idea makes sense and I'll give that a bash. All kinda new to me so learning as I go. Yesterday I popped over to Norway for a MRI of my lower back and neck, was emailed the pictures within 3 hours and also sent to the Doc. Not bad at all. Had a few hours at it this morning. So hopefully will get the Footboard mocked up by the time I have to stop playing.
  24. Now that’s a good idea! Will do that, cheers!
