  1. Hi all - I have stopped doing tree works (turns out office life does suit me better) and now have a load of kit to sell if anyone wants to get in touch. Full climbing kit (LOLER expired) DDRT hitchlimber setup, petzl sequoia SRT harness and Distel spikes. Husky 560xp 15" and 18" bars and T540xp (II) 12" bar. All bought since April last year and not much use - I worked 2 days a week for 4 months, and didn't always use own kit. Shame to sell it but it's just not getting use so if you can give it a better home I'm happy to do a good deal. Would be ideal for a new starter as it's a complete kit (albeit needs LOLER and the saws will want a service as they've been sat for a few months). PM me if you're interested and I'll provide further details. Dan
  2. Hi all - customer in a conservation area has asked me to reduce a big bay tree. About 15-20ft - the layman would call it a tree. Would you advise them to get council consent as in a conservation area, or just crack on as it may technically be a shrub? I think the test is whether it would reasonably be called a tree. I think this would to be fair. Cheers Dan
  3. Cant see an election being called unless Gov can't get things through parliament. If there's an art.50 vote (as I expect) it will get through as most labour MPs will vote in favour (and presume lords - unelected - would wave it through as not wanting to overturn referendum). Great repeal bill may be harder (in lords particularly). I think biggest problem will be getting domestic policy through- e.g. grammar schools. Part of me thinks they'd want Corbyn in charge as long as possible - and he'd surely go after a crushing general election defeat (if the polls can ever be believed again) to be replaced by someone more threatening to tories
  4. Thanks all. Will check out the videos
  5. Thanks NFG - Odd Down, south west side
  6. Think client wants to keep the ivy (albeit I could take bits off here and there if that helped) but will check. Not sure how to choke ring-ring cambium saver other than wrapping it, so couldn't retrieve it? Good advice adding biner into choking knot thanks
  7. Cheers. I'm aware of munter hitch and will learn it but oddly enough it's not taught on climbing course.
  8. Popped in and out of this topic but court generally expensive and a hassle. Would they really go this far or just trying it on? Having said that, I've never been involved in a small claims action.
  9. Yep been keeping an eye on that one. Seems like good advice has been given so I haven't added.
  10. Thanks stihlmadasever; didn't think of that. (Job wouldn't bear cost of mewp and no rear access to garden anyway.)
  11. Hi all I'm new to arb work and have received a lot of helpful advice from posters on arbtalk; thank you. Thought it might be useful to say I'm a commercial property lawyer (3 days a week) and now do arb work part time after 10 years full time in the office. If anyone needs any general advice around property law issues feel free to PM me, or I check arbtalk pretty regularly so start a new topic. (I'm not trying to tout for business - hopefully that's clear). I won't be able to advise on specifics or work on documents etc. but should be able to point in the right direction and be a voice from someone who knows the arb industry. (My knowledge of TPOs and conservation is limited - I've seen replies from other posters more clued up than me on that, but happy to help if I can.) Dan
  12. Hi - client has asked me to leave the big twin standing stems on a mature ash reduction (looks like it has been heavily topped in the past and he wants all the newer growth clearing). Stems covered in ivy. I climb DdRT. Won't have a problem getting up as I'm pretty sure there's a decent anchor point in the newer growth I'm removing (limbs certainly look thick enough but I'm conscious they may be weakly attached if it's been topped before). Once I'm done (having cut off my anchor point) I need to get down (without ladders or spiking) and retrieve climbing line. I only have fairly basic hitch climber set up (no SRT kit) and no ladders. Tree is alive and in a CA so I don't want to spike it (even though with ivy you'd never tell). Ring and ring cambium saver - don't think I can wrap it round stem to descend DdRT on hitch climber as presumably it wouldn't retrieve. In my head, I'm thinking of tying into one of the stems with a choked alpine on main climbing line, descending the single working (choked) end of the line on a figure 8 with prussik, then pulling on the 'static' (is that the right word) end (i.e. the other side of the alpine) once on the ground to loosen up and retrieve it. Only problem might be getting it past all the ivy. Should I also put a marlin spike and biner on the static end before the alpine in case it slips? (I'll be lanyarded in round stem too - and probably left dangling by my Ds from a snag of tough old ivy if my main line fails.) Hope that makes sense. Does it sound like that would work/best idea with limited kit? (I'm a new climber) Thanks Dan
  13. Hi All I am recently qualified and looking to fill a space on Tuesdays from 7 Feb if I can help anyone. CS30,31,38 (CS39 booked for mid-Feb), own PPE, saw, climbing kit and transport. Based in Bath but happy to travel for the right experience. If you need a hand Tuesdays (or weekends) please get in touch. PM or 07772177887 Thanks Dan Shaw
  14. Good to hear the replies on this thread. I've been working a well paid office job for the last 10 years but, having done physical outdoor jobs in uni summer holidays and almost joined the army, I'm desperate to get outdoors again. Hopefully 2017 will bring best of both worlds. I'm moving to 3 days a week in the office from Feb and filling the rest of my time up with tree work. (If anyone is near Bath and wants a hand PM me). Dan
  15. I never found any on YouTube prior to doing the course in November. Pole rescue was the most complicated of the three (albeit still pretty simple) as one scenario involved setting a top anchor and a third man belaying from ground using figure 8 and prussik anchored to nearby tree.
  16. I'll save their blushes by not revealing who this was, but funniest family quote came from an anxious (older) female getting very involved in the film 'Captain Philips': "I'd sh*t myself if this happened to me in real life; I'm in a bad way just watching the film!"
  17. Well said s.varty. Too young at 53 (not that there's ever a good age to go). A great talent.
  18. Just finished cs38 last week and used system Riggerbear has described (with ring rather than 2 krabs). When not anchored I found taking climbing line up wrapped with an extra turn around stem a good back up (on hitch climber - mainly because I already had it set up for normal climbing). I did actually come off (both spikes slipped) on a smooth beech about 12ft up and slid straight down the stem with just lanyard slowing me down. Grazed my arms up nicely so will never forget to keep climbing line attached now! (Not the instructor's fault I should add!) If I'd been attached it would just have cinched down and I'd only have slipped a foot or so. Live and learn.
  19. I think lunch breaks are generally unpaid in most employment contracts. I.e. 9-5 would be 7 hours of paid work.
  20. Land Registry plans are not definitive - they would need to check the plans on the deeds, and even then these can be interpreted in light of physical boundary features on the ground. That said, in a well planned estate as this appears to be, you would expect the plans to be pretty good (particularly if the estate is not v old). Also worth checking if there's an estate/residents management company responsible for maintaining borders/landscaped areas etc. Maintenance over a long period can be a good indicator of ownership.
