  1. Based in Bath and hoping to do climbing tickets soon but limited annual leave left. If anyone knows of weekend providers I'd appreciate it. Dan
  2. As above - just picking up the odd weekend job for friends and relatives at the moment but hopefully ramping up soon. I'm planning on getting PL, personal injury and theft to begin with. I'm aware that prof indemnity and property damage etc are also covered - but thought this wouldn't be worth it while I'm only on small jobs where I'm unlikely to go near a house. Was thinking a low limit for PL to begin with, say, £500k - any suggestions? Thanks Dan
  3. Didn't insurance premium tax go up in budget, and insurers are passing it on to customers. One of the stealth taxes Osborne used to fund more eye catching giveaways
  4. (Not checked forum rules - sorry if this in breach, let me know!)
  5. Hi- just wanted to give a quick shout for this new charity. TRUK is a disaster relief charity which mobilises veterans and civilians with applicable skillsets to work in disaster areas (UK and abroad). The UK arm has recently been set up but the US version has been operating for a few years. Thought it might be of interest to any vets on here- or just to others who fancy a challenge (pretty sure most forum users would have applicable skills). Or you could always donate... 6. Not read all the replies to this but I definitely agree with the title. I never gave this much thought till we had our second child and went for a technique (not as weird as it sounds) called hypnobirthing, in which you both picture yourselves having the birth you want and practice relaxing activities (e.g. listening to chill music) throughout the pregnancy, then when you're in the thick of labour your body instinctively knows to calm down and relax and just do what it needs to do at that time, because you've trained your mind (Jedi style)- and the body follows where the mind leads. In football terms "play the way you're facing". Our daughter's (first child) birth was pretty difficult for my wife; but using these techniques our son was born at home with no intervention and (my wife would say) v little pain. I read a book by a paratrooper company commander (Russell Lewis I think) who had a really similar technique for visualising himself as a leader on the battlefield- in his mind, putting himself in the shoes of famous generals who had won astonishing victories. I think he called it neurolinguistic programming. All I can say is from our experience it really works. I try to use the same techniques now in other areas of life. (E.g. if your Instagram account constantly shows pics/videos of arb work - your mind will absorb part of that even though it's not your experience). Dan
  7. Just wanted to give some very positive feedback for cs30/31 with Martin and Jamie for Rol in Blandford last week. Instruction really clear and relaxed. Loads of practice time in the forest. Martin and Jamie a mine of information for all our questions and really put us at ease for the assessment. Can't recommend highly enough. roland heming forestry and arboricultural training and assessment Dan
  8. Looking for weekend work within an hour from Bath. Enthusiastic, hard working and reliable. CS30/31 own saw and PPE. Office based in the week so looking for as much experience as possible. PM or 07772177887 Dan
  9. Recently completed cs30/31 (Roland Heming in Blandford) and looking for weekend work. Own PPE and saw etc. Anyone working Saturday/Sunday roughly within an hour of Bath? PM or 07772177887 Dan
  10. My daily average is 9164 according to iPhone. Not too bad for an office worker?
  11. Hi all I'm looking at starting trading within the next year and will need to get insured. In your experience do arb insurers require you to have all relevant tickets for the type of work - e.g. Tree pruning, Stump grinder, chipper, first aid etc? I will have the basic 4 tickets (30,31,38,39) but need to make sure I'm covered for a fairly varied workload (hopefully). Paying for tickets from my existing wage - if I have to front load all the tickets I'd need to trade as self-employed, I'll be loss making for years! (If I could even afford it) Cheers Dan
  12. That's really helpful thanks Andrew.
  13. Hi all I've ordered a load of gear ahead of cs38 in the summer but intending to get a head start before then and try out my gear. I will need it all LOLERing at some point, but not trading yet. Anything I should know before starting out? I don't want to invalidate the gear accidentally or anything. The shop (Sorbus) took down all the serial numbers and I've seen people talking about marking their equipment for LOLER, but assume that's prior to getting it tested. Any advice appreciated. (I'll obviously try not to fall out of a tree and break my head on first attempt) Cheers Dan
  14. Hi all - will be climbing soon so looking to pick up some 2nd hand kit to start me off. Give me a shout (reply or PM) if you're looking to offload any basic equipment and don't want the hassle of eBay. Happy to pay fair price + post obviously. (I think I saw a recent thread on this same topic - if the author of that thread wants first dibs that's fair.) Cheers Dan
  15. Apologies, should have left contact details (didn't realise this was a read only thread). Dan 07772177887 (or private message me)
  16. Hi All I'm looking for some weekend/bank holiday volunteer experience, with a view to taking my first chainsaw tickets soon. Based in Bath but happy to travel. I'm a hard worker (property lawyer - would be fun to know if there are any others on here?!) keen to develop a new skill, get outdoors, and possibly equip myself for a change in the future. Related experience includes labouring on construction sites and landscape gardening (including log splitting) during uni, also working on my own house and garden. A good day's graft is exactly what I need after sitting in an office all week. I'll work tirelessly getting things organised on the ground. You'll get another pair of hands for free, and I'll pick up as much knowledge as possible for as long as you want me. Hopefully a win win for both of us. Let me know if you're interested and I'll get in touch. Cheers Dan (P.S. Any recommendations for NPTC course providers near Bath, or Derby? I can travel from both. I've checked online, but personal recommendations are always helpful.)
