  1. Its the full moon coming up. Lunar cycles affect cats and tree arborists in the same way, you see, they go bananas with excess energy, stay out all night working (or mousing) for a couple of days either side of the full moon....just wait till the next new moon - you'll only want to lie on the sofa and sleep! Haha...
  2. Sounds like someone's guardian angels deserve a pay rise...
  3. Could also whack a load of money down and buy a tracked cherry-picker/MEWP/"Spiderlift" (whatever). Would obviate a lot of the need for technical climbing at the start, make most jobs more efficient, and could be used for other chores as well. Not a lot of guys would have a load of money lying around to spend on such gadgets, but if you are retiring from the services, I'm guessing theres a good chance you have saved a fair sum of ver the years.
  4. Tried watching it once. Just couldn't. Bullshitometer was fair set to blow a gasket....
  5. And if you never find work, you can always buy a leather jacket, find a small manky dog on a string, pick up some cheap beers and head on down to the Alexanderplatz...nobody will judge you in Berlin. Awsome city.
  6. Yes, wasn't clear, sorry - I meant there is no difference between one brand or another at the same level of "quality", to be precise: Stihl's "premium" oil (HP Ultra) is the same as Husqvarna "Premium" oil, (XP) - and Stihl's "mid level oil" (HP Super) is the same thing as Husqvarna mid range (LS) and so it goes. My point, badly put, was that all the oil brands sell a range of "quality levels", and, provided you know which level you are on, it matters not which brand you choose. Whatever brand you want to go with, just buy their utmost premium super duper oil, and your machines will be ok.
  7. Funny thing the way the physics works - a given horizontal kg "pull force" will actually move more than the numerical weight, depending on the friction coefficient of the object to be pulled and the surface. Thats why tirfors are rated like "3.2 tonne lift/5 tonn pull" this means that the machine will drag a 5 tonne concrete blck over a smooth concrete floor, but not lift it ( I think a concrete cube is the base metric, but I could be wrong) An average man pulling on a roap attached to a load cell, will generate about 35 kg of force. Obviously if he had something to brace his feet against, like a rock, he could generate a lot more force, but in that case the pull would really be a lift. Its not about strength so much as traction. The US Army vehicle recovery manual has some excellent illustrations and explanation of the dynamics of this idea. http://www.lastgreatroadtrip.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/us-army-vehicle-recovery-manual.pdf
  8. Sorry, bit confused. So the mog tailer wasn't nicked after all?
  9. Stihl HP Ultra, 40:1 - a piston ring is a piston ring, its not gonna know the difference between one brand and another. They're all the same thing anyway, the only difference being quality grade. There's economy Husqvanra branded oil, economy Stihl branded oil etc. Mid range Huq oil, mid range Stihl oil etc. And then there's "Premium" Husq branded and Stihl branded and Echo branded and Redmax branded etc etc. And that's what we should be using in our expensive saws, the premium stuff.
  10. The average human male can put 35kg force of pull on a horizontal rope, given average ground traction. A three to one system would thus give you approximately 100kg pull. Thats a lot of messing around with rope and pulleys. One can buy a pocket size chain lever hoist for reasonable money which will give a 250kg pull. Just saying...
  11. Extreme Hugging? Would have thought the potential for blocked airway in a tree was pretty small...unless one felt peckish in a sweet chestnut or huge hazel and started foraging, of course. Joking aside, we should all be rehearsing scenarios. Cant do it for real unless you've done it in your head before. Hat's off t'ya.
  12. Paint it up and leave it conspicuously displayed in the shed as a sacrificial decoy....Nice looking design...
  13. You know the odd hard tooth that the file won't bite? Well, I found a solution - a cheap Lidl diamond rod sharpener: about the same diameter as the 4mm Stihl file, I was using the flat edge on pico chain to bust through the hardened layer this afternoon. Worked a treat, no more forcing files. Going to by a few in different diameters. (this is not the one I have, a €3.99 job from Lidl, but looks much the same) Chef's Choice EdgeCrafter Diamond Rod Knife Sharpener #412
  14. Some of the prices quoted here are pretty shocking to my ears - £40-50ph. Our local guy is €30ph and he's considered expensive by some. But then I suppose mechanics always were expensive. I have also taken to doing my own repairs for this reason, never been a better time, what with all the youtube walkthroughs etc. One never knows what people's circumstances are, and they often don't think to give you the whole picture. The OP could be living in a shed next to his parent's house for all we know, and have no costs at all...Everyone has a car if they live ruralish, maybe he's just a big van guy. Some costs, part of life, others not so much. Working for that kind of money a lot of his customers will be paying cash in hand as well, which is a huge advantage, for obvious reasons. Another thing about working "cheap" is people don't expect the earth from you. If you're a low-intesity kind of soul, who doesn't want to have to be "on" all the time, then you gotta price yourself to reflect that reality. (Never mind me - just chucking some random thought out there.....)
  15. Ms 461 is savage torquey. Be sure to order a high output oiler, whatever you get.
  16. Kids these days...I dunno......at least they're getting out in the open air, that's something. My money says the fungi mycelium will be fine. I hope.
  17. Insert or build a 1/2 inch pipe into the centre of the stack then duct tape a dyson hoover to the exposed end. (You will use this to suck air from the centre of the stack, for analysis) The second part is you need to acquire a coloured smoke cannister. I can't help you with this, but in the UK I should think it wouldn't be to hard to track one down. Wait for an averagely windy day and stand upwind of the firewood stack, about ten feet or so, and release some coloured smoke for a few seconds only. Then fire up the dyson, and monitor the colour of the air in the transparent dust container (you should have emptied and cleaned the container first obviously). If you see colour, then you know the wind is penetrating to the centre of the stack.
  18. https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipNy1t1CbnQxRJzzOQlgqcdrpYdApZ0GjOG_RuYV A 40-something year old spruce, in the fall zone of another bigger spruce that had to go tomorrow. It had a back lean, whacked a couple of wedges in till the disappeared and still no joy. Had forgotten the felling bar at home, but remembered I had a fencing bar in the van and used that to rock it until it went.
  19. I watched the interview. The question was put that IF abortion was made illegal, should women who avail of it receive some form of punishment? You could see his mind trying to catch up with the reporter's machine-gun-issimo, overtalking bullying rant, and he said the only logical thing he could have said in that moment. Yes, if its the law and somebody breaks the law, the law must punish them. It was out of context and out of reality. The interviewers always try to do this, to confuse their guest and get them on the back foot all the time, make them slip up and get controversy. The media is the monster IMO not Trump. I like the guy personally, he's the only one speaking from the heart. As for the outrage against "banning Mexicans from crossing the border" - WHY the hell not??? They are crossing ILLEGALLY. If you entered the USA as a cargo-ship stowaway, lets say, you would fully expect to be deported if detected, would you not? Why should the Mexicans get special treatment?
  20. Press coverage?? Sounds like something that could only happen in the UK. Sorry, Im not poking fun, but honest to god, what are people like? In America they'd have their guns out over something like that. If I have caused offence please ignore and blame the alcohol....
  21. I would climb the tree with a regular ladder to about two thirds of the way up, or whatever you feel is safe, with someone holding the ladder, and tie three ropes to the stem. these three ropes will act as guys while you chog out the bottom of the tree a couple of feet at at a time. There is a specific cut for this and I don't know what it is called and can't describe how to do it, so you will need to research, but it works. Have three friends hold the guy lines as the tree comes down to stop it falling. or hire a mobile aluminium access scaffold.
  22. Get yourself an inversion table. Inverting is the best thing for the human back, and can sort most problems.
  23. This, and what on earth is the guy doing with a 90cc saw if he can't tell a duff chain from a bent bar? Or did one of his employees use the saw, misidentify the (obvious) problem and tell him the bar was bent? In which case, why didn't he check it himself before levelling accusations. Sounds like someone at that firm is not competent to be running any size of chainsaw....
  24. I hear the gear head on the echoes is soft. Use a Stihl 131 myself, the 4-mix is fine, its the shaft that gives trouble.
