  1. Interestingly I found his chart that lists trees that can cause skin reactions. Hornbeam and willow are both on it: Wood Allergies and Toxicity | The Wood Database
  2. Colud it be an 'allergic' reaction of some sort? I have a problem with conifers.
  3. I wish this was happening round my way too - anyone in Mid-Norfolk that wants to get rid of wood just let me know:thumbup:

That sounds a little like what I call 'home surgery' Mike. My Grandad used to do that. He was always whipping out his shutknife and cutting out splitters and the like when we were on the farm. I've stopped that now because I was once cut out a splinter from my chest and even though I thought I'd sterilised the scalpel I ended up with a big cyst. Pretty horrible because it burst then wouldn't heal. Very nasty and that was the end of home surgery.
  5. Always happy to do that Anyone have one near me?

I've bought myself the O'Tom tick remover, so better equipped now for next time. I think I'll get myself a pair of those tweezers as well. Good advice all, muckh appreciated
  7. Yes, I only have five acres, so no commercial income from it. I may try to sell a few loads of firewood to cover some of my costs. Whatever I do I don't have a large budget, so I agree that hiring is the best move
  8. Thanks Pbtaylor - no one think that altough the pine is great its maybe too big a tree too close to the house?
  9. Thanks for the advice Paul sounds like a good idea
  10. Great day for me - I've been on a chainsaw course with Andys chainsaw training Did maintenance all day today,, crosscutting tomorrow. Learning lots and looking forward to getting down my wood with a bit more knowledge of what I'm up to.
  11. Thanks Paul, Yes, the Scots is great, its just the size and how close it is to the house that are a worry. The whitebeams root plate has lifted a little, but its settled and not shifted any further. The Cherry is the one in the worst condition. Could it be pruned in sucha way as to save it or is it just a question if time before the stem fails?
  12. Thats interesting Kev. You do need the space, you're right there, it is a problem. The softwood I burn is mainly Scots and Leylandii. I leave around five feet lengths out in the elements for a couple of years at least, but probably longer thinking about it. They're stacked on end. When I log them up - no resin. When I burn them I find they're great. The chimney sweep comes once a year and only ever gets a cupful of soot out It seems that eveyones expereinces on here with firewood are different - I love oak, but lots seem to hate it.
  13. It sounds like you're not seasoning it long enough Kev (IMHO). I leave mine out in the rain for a couple of years , it helps to wash out the resin in my view. Then its not at all sticky when you split it and stack it. Also then it doesn't burn with the soot.
  14. This is the Cherry, I've noticed it has a fungi growing on the trunk.
  15. Can you ? Doh! What a tw*t I am. Taking a good look at myself now and beginning to realise that the bald head, growing paunch and technological impairment probably indicate that middle age has well and truely set in. I shall go take some pics with the Ipad, then I'll see if I can get them on here
  16. I've been looking at them Spandit, the vids on Youtube look mighty impressive but the price is shocking, about seven grand? I'm working on a plan at the moment. First move will be fell my Leylandi. Then the space between the two rows of the will give me the old ride back. That will give me a way into the wood with a vehicle so maybe then I can think about getting the rabbit mower in to make the rest of the paths.

I think some of us are much better informed now TDC - I most certainly am. Didn't get to the vets today, but I'm going in the morning. I'll get one of those kits like yours. Thanks for posting the pic of it. Then I'm ready for the next time I pick one of the little beggars up
