  4. Hiluxstihl will up load photos tomorrow as the computer is having a slow day. Doobin I also forgot to say I've got a 15 year old boy and the only way to get him to work is to let him play on the quad!! Not so keen on work with the tractor!
  5. Doobin I can't really say as I don't use a Compact tractor. But I would not think so if you had a small distance to transport the timber but over a larger distance with the increase in speed with the quad you would get more loads per day which may out weigh the extra running costs. Also the loads would be possibly be smaller (depending on the ground conditions) with the quad so you would need more loads per day. I made the mistake of selling my old Kodiak 400 (manual) which would work in the wood all day long on a tank of petrol, with the polaris 800 I've loads of power and it will pull a fair weight but fuel consumption is twice as much. It would certinally be intresting to have a compact tractor and a quad on the same ground and see which moved the most timber over a day. I personally use the quad for shooting as well so I can get use of it 2 ways, which I would not with a compact tractor!! Also take the trailer off and you have a machine that is built for fun!! and fun it is!!

  7. danroker1987 Also remove the hydraulic pipe to drain some of the oil out of the cylinder so when you weld it the oil will not heat up and expand through what you are trying to weld.
  8. I got a leaf spring arrangement from Canada from a company called JMS Remorques I've had a look on there web site and cant see it any more can post a picture when I get home if you like.
  9. Jonjon1263 one other thing I forgot to mention the quads with a fixed rear axle and swing arm are best as you can put a lot of weight directly on to the axle, if you have independent suspension the hitch weight makes the bike handle like a pig. Hope it helps

Hiluxstihl I over came that problem to a degree with fitting bear claw tyres and I made a trailer with over run brakes on one axle and the trailer length can be adjusted to give a substantial hitch weight (over loaded according to the manufacturer) which helps with traction and the brakes help for going down hill. But the quad will always be limited IMO because it is designed to have low ground pressure and to get traction you need weight which the quad does not have!! So to answer Jonjon1263 question if you do go down the route of a quad get a 450 yamaha/honda with H/L box and good tyres and you will get by!!

I use a 800 polaris in the wood but it drinks petrol and is limited to the terrain it can work on, eg very small slope up hill or on the flat. it works well down hill but you've got to watch the weight as it is easily pushed with a trailer on the back. I had a 400 Yamaha quad a few years back and wish i had kept it as it pulled well with a H/L manual gearbox and was quite easy on the fuel.
  12. Hi there I've got a polaris 800 and it just drinks petrol if working hard see below but it cant half pull. as my dad said if you want horses (hp) you got to feed them + boys love there toys
  13. Here is my old splitter made 20 or so years ago and still going strong!! Health and safety may not like it!! also the new 60 ton splitter that at the moment has a lump of spruce jammed in the blade!! so some redesign of the blade needed.
