  1. I run mine with an 18" bar occasionally and it's an animal. You're in for a treat with a 15" bar! Enjoy.
  2. Looks great, though I wonder why you didn't use a self tailing winch, on which you could winch continuously using the single line, and not need to continually stop to shift the frictio hitch up. You would need to lock it of once (for which a hitch would work) after any impact, but under a load, to put the winch in line, but then could wind up or down at will, using your spare hand to pull through the line.
  3. I could use dumpy bags, and do when out of bins, but the bins are neat, easy to move (especially with the lids screwed down) and empty. Unfortunately, I have a van not a tipper, but the beauty of the wee chipper is that you take it to the tree, not the tree to the chipper, and you can always get a bin/bag in with it, not a;ways the case with a tipper!
  4. 460 is the best saw I've ever picked up, if I could afford to, I'd stock pile them!
  5. Sorry, when i said fly wheel, I mean the 3 part wheel that expands within the brake spring.
  6. I cannae see it through the exhaust port, so I'm stripping it down. Any advice getting the engine away fro the rest of the body? The fly wheel oviously needs to come off, but is proving solid.
  7. Hi has anyone got any experience of these type of motor movers? they look to lightweight for caravans (looking at a caravan club forum), but I have a 750kg trailer and a CS100 chipper, which I reckon it would shift ok. Shifta Products | Home of the Mr Shifta Caravan Mover | Industrial Movers |
  8. That's exactly what my groundie and I were discussing last week.
  9. For future reference, the best time to prune Acers is mid winter, though if you see any reverted growth, I's take it out immediately.
  10. The council here are currently replacing lots of bins, so far I've scrounged 4, though I can fit 6 on the trailer, and 4 in the van (with my tool shelf mower etc) or 2 and the chipper. I did find a place selling them for about £40 each. The other option is to call the council and say the bin lorry ate my dustbin. This is of course a dishonest and despicable practice that would only get you one bin. The beauty of the bins comes when unloading. They're great, and can be sold for £5 for 240ltrs of bark!
  11. I can lift one into the transit alone, and they drag ok uphill on a wet lawn. 240ltr wheelie bin is about perfect for chip. DON'T try the same with logs!
  12. 7 hours on Lewis's clock now, and my groundie cannae stop smilling. I'm loving the wee little machine, uses next to no fuel, and churns out stupid amounts of chip. The idea of chipping into a wheelie bin and using that to move the chip out of the garden is genius. Thankyou whoever suggested that (I think it may have been Stephen Blair!).
  13. First Saw, get a MS170. Light and reliable (he says with 3 in bits on the workbench), get a bigger saw to use when you need it, but do everything you can with a 170, they only cost £150, and having one will increase your bigger saws life by decades. Learn how to keep a chain sharp and they're all you need to an awful lot of work. For a bigger saw, the MS460 is the dogs. 18" bar is stunning, yet it stihl has power to burn with a 24/25" bar on it. Probably a bit much for starting out, so the ms362 is the obvious choice, but I cannae comment as it's top of my wish list. If your climbing, the 170 is great, but, the 150t is a great wee saw.
  14. Any ideas? It's a 10' tree in a drained container, with some signs of drought, but this looks to me as if something is eating it.
  15. Thanks all for the advice. I have got it apart now, but have a new problem. Any idea how to get a bit of starter rope out of the cylinder? It cut through it first time round. The oil tank is out, and has a wee hole in the top corner, looks melted oddly.
  16. Thanks, it was easy with that advice!
  17. Hi all, again looking for advice trying to get to the oil tank. I'm needing to get this nut undone, but it's solid as a rock. I think it may be a reverse thread. Any tips?
  18. Hi all, I just thought I would mention that midnight tonight is the closing time for registration for a place at this years inaugural Scottish Rural Parliament, being held in Oban, 6-8th of November. It is open for anyone from a rural community to attend, and has 6 key topics, of which Land use and planning is one, so definately has some relevance to forestry. Anyway, I thought I would post on here, from what I hear there are still spaces, but not a huge amount. Look at the website for more details: Scottish Rural Parliament ?
  19. Hey all, I've got a wee ms 170 which the oil is pouring right through. I've got another old ms170 to butcher for bits, but I'm failing to get the cover off with the starter cord in it. Do I need to take the loop handle off to get that cover out the way?
  20. Skin. Man up, and learn to cut with the cord on the outward side when in stoney/horrid ground.
  21. I'm now looking for membership of the club. Meet Lewis on his first job.
  22. Lewis, as in C.S. It's amazing what he can fit into a wardrobe!
  23. I got my CS100 last week, called it Lewis, and am loving it to bits. It takes 4" + pieces but where gloves, especially with dead stuff.
  24. I wouldn't touch a woodmizer LT17 with a barge pole, you're better of with an alaskan. I think their bigger mills are meant to be decent mind.
  25. Alder. Simple. If it's kept wet it's great, if it dries out then it aint.
