  1. Sorry, I thought tree planting was a conservation activity. There are a number of corn starch weed suppressant, discs, mats and membranes on the market... and biodegradeable tree guards. I could hook out a couple of links later if anyone is interested. cheers, steve
  2. or.... kill everything else off for your own rewards. It's of no wonder our habitat/ wildlife is in such a sorry state of affairs.
  3. Good call. I hate our willow!
  4. Hi Jon, our woodland and meadows are wet most of the year - during last years hot Summer we didn't water anything but everything grew very well. According to the old maps it was marshland, drainage ditches were added and that dealt with a lot of the marsh. We have quite a lot of big (some are very fat) old Welsh oaks which must have been planted as a buffer protection for the overstood coppice (mostly comprising of hazel). Our oaks cope really well with the watery conditions. There's also a fair amount of Willow around our plot. Cheers, steve

    Yep, about 4cc
  6. Very, very interesting indeed! I've seen lots of Rocket Mass Heater photos and a fair few Masonry stoves but nothing like what you have described. Did you design it yourself? Would love to see some photos or video in action. cheers, steve
  7. It's a good start - but yes, what I really want to see is practical actions. The UKGov talk shop keeps my confidence low on things actually getting delivered like they should be. A cross party committee on energy and efficiencies sounds like a great plan to me.... whatever it takes to get things practically achieved. cheers, steve
  8. What's not to like about this? Jeremy Corbyn: the green Britain I want to build - The Ecologist (steve waits for various 'unlike' comments from a wave of Arbtalk members - but steve will continue to try and educate them).
  9. We got a Jack Russell in the end Jon because no Parsons Terriers turned up in our area. He's busily destroying the house and pooing everywhere. Fortunately he didn't kill any of the chickens at first sight so should be good for guarding them. 'Pickle' is now 9 weeks old. cheers, steve
  10. The previous Labour attempt was right wing.
  11. What if we get our underground aquifers polluted by fracking chemicals? What if all the bees die due to neonicotinoid poisoning? What if thousands of people are made homeless because they can't afford to pay back their 'interest only' mortgages? What if academy & free schools start failing our children's education? What if people you know start to die because the NHS has failed them? ....and you are worried about terrorists? Nowt strange as folk. cheers, steve
  12. Hi Bob, this is very interesting.... we've just sent a message out on a flower growers forum for anyone wanting woodchip/ arbwaste in England (specifically mentioned Guildford as an example) and who knows?.... maybe someone wants chip the same as we do?... Will let you know if anything turns up. cheers, steve
  13. I like a dog to be a part of the family without a hidden agenda to bite my arm off.
  14. God save our gracious Mull29, God save our glorious Mull29, God save our Mull29, Great and Mull29ious, etc *sorry, I forgot the format.
  15. Haha! You made me larf. Do they really charge you £20 per load? We need plenty of the stuff for keeping down the grass in between raised beds.... I imagine lots of people would be in a similar situation. Could be worth finding your nearest flower growers and asking them if they'd take it for free. cheers, steve
  16. We're happy to take woodchip at the moment - near Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. In return I offer a chocolate croissant (if you're lucky) and a cup of tea. If one of the chickens has laid a fresh egg you may also get one of those. cheers, steve
  17. I'd like to go to the beach, fish and take photos of the sunset and sunrise whilst the robot earns my keep! cheers, steve
  18. It's not even as though he's got a grip of running a business either!... look at the state of communications at HMRC! It's an absolute shambles. So much money, business down time and stress!! And what has our glorious PM done about it?? Sweet F.A. Seriously, the Conservative Party no longer care about small to medium enterprises... they used to and I used to respect them for that. I summise that the Conservative party could do with as much as a rethink as the Labour Party..... Tories infiltrated Labour; and the elite infiltrated the Conservatives. Happy days if you are born into the already very well 'sorted' 1%.... but not a single Arbtalk member is that posh. Well, maybe apart from the Arbtalk Boss. Our leader. His Royalness Baron Von Trees.
  19. That sounds great - I like your idea of using bricks where most would use a steel barrel. Does the steel plate on top would get hot enough to boil a kettle? And can it be removed easily enough for cleaning ash from the top of the j-tube? Did you run the chimney along a bench before exiting the barn? Too many questions! Cheers, Steve
  20. *seems* Corruption and lack of concern for the environment, etc, business as usual then.... Is there no room in politics for people with integrity and high morals any more? Because that's what's missing from the current bunch. Well, apart from a select few perhaps. cheers, steve
  21. The current PM certainly isn't up to the job.
  22. It's not been a good year for honey flow so chances are they would need whatever stores they have to see them through the winter. cheers, steve
  23. Thanks Woodworks, Yes our roof is very well sealed and has 50mm Polyfoam insulation to reduce condensation issues. I've looked at some of the wood stoves recommended in this thread and although they look like great stoves they are very expensive!.... way too much for us to afford right now, so it seems our best plan is to build a Rocket Mass Heater, which will probably cost £300-£400 at most. cheers, Steve
  24. I keep a few hives and had a general interest in bees, also collected a number of swarms in various scenarios. I've not heard anyone mention that honey bees are protected before so this would be news to me. Sounds like an ideal opportunity for somebody to get their own natural log hive. I'd be interested in seeing photos of this job! In theory you could cut it into sections to make lowering more manageable and stack them back together in the same order at ground level .... but in effect it would be similar to moving a hive a short distance and the bees won't like that! cheers, steve
