Christ, I hope you are right. We have been struggling under 'the tyranny of the disturbed bat' for a few years now. The process you describe is similar to the one we follow for nesting birds. Does this mean that bats have no greater level of protection than nesting birds then?
  4. home for bumble bees and earwigs?

The offence is to disturb a bat roost, rather than intend to disturb a bat root. If you are up a tree and disturb bats (or a roost that bats use) you have already commited an offence.

But that is the case regardless of whether or not the site is in a conservation area.

Treequip, I am with you here. Can someone explain what we are both missing?
  8. IMO Arbocop was pointing some pretty basic stuff about working on a road. Sam and Firestorm however, are entering into personal attacks. Sorry guys, but I think its surely you two that are 'ruining' arbtalk.
  9. No offence to Mick, but if it were me, I think I may do without the spikes for now..... BTW, Top offer regarding the hat Mike.

  11. 3 days? Its 7 days now, and I think it's as the result of the accident..... Over-seven-day incapacitation of a worker Accidents must be reported where they result in an employee or self-employed person being away from work, or unable to perform their normal work duties, for more than seven consecutive days as the result of their injury. This seven day period does not include the day of the accident, but does include weekends and rest days. The report must be made within 15 days of the accident. ......Not seven days 'cause you couldn't be arsed. It's OK Mr Cardigan, sir - you can come back out of the cell now.
  12. Are you sure you are taking this seriously? Korea isn't a city. It isn't even a county - Its two countrys.

  14. The pitfalls are endless. I have known 'experienced users' have the assessment stopped on the grounds of safety, while they were testing the saw prior to even cutting with it. That, unfortunately, is why people do training courses.
  15. Well, I suppose that your shortest shortcut would be to download the assessment schedules off the internet. Make sure you understand exactly what they require you to be able to do (or not do), then contact your nearest assessment center and book an assessment. There is no need to 'prove training' prior to assessment (although NPTC for one recommend training before hand). Should you be found 'not yet competent', you will know what you need to brush up on next time.

Sorry buddy, no offence meant. Different types of logs could be compared to different types of cars. They are all basically made of the same stuff. Its how they are put together that determines how quick they get going and how long they last.

There is an old old poem on the subject of what types of wood burns.... Lets see if I can remember Wood If is kept dry and is well seasoned Burns good. Its not very long poem. or a very good one Other wood poems are available.. but are less accurate.
  20. Psssssssst: I think he's talking about the parked car not the branches.
  21. These days I seem to only get the opportunity to do rough woodwork. I am quite tempted to make my wife a shave horse like this.. I showed it to her to gauge her opinion. She said it reminds her of a scene from the film "burn after reading" Not sure I really want to make one now
  22. Hmmmmm, may not go down so well. Right into metalwork at school - no time for woodwork at all. Lathes, forging, casting, acid baths, ahhhhh, those were the days. My poor kids get nothing more exciting to do than 'design how a mobile phone might look' at school now.
  23. For a moment I thought you where using an old wheel as a forge. Had to look twice.

Here is the feed roller spring I was going on about The spring goes onto the eye on the end of a 3" thread. There is no access to the nut underneath it. Can you see the nut? No? nor could I. I guess as long as you do nothing that requires de-tensioning or re-tightening the spring there is nothing to worry about. They are great chippers - obviously, as you rarely hearing anything bad about them.

Fair play. From what I can see it says "Open"
