  1. Not fond of the MS201. The 150 is a surprisingly OK saw, but it is prone to plummeting to the floor from what I have heard. The last Husq top handle I had was a 338. I leave that lying around in the shed to act as a decoy in case I get broken into
  2. felling upto 380mm has two pre reqs.... Chainsaw mantenance. Cross cutting. The 200mm Lantra ITA is not a pre req....... but sod all that, good luck with the next 18 yrs of child raising - best job in the world, enjoy it.
  3. Well now, what have you been up to recently that is the first time for you? and what have you done that you will never do again? Good things or bad, don't be shy now, spill the beans and we can all learn through your experiences. I'll kick of with a double header. Last Wednesday was the last time I will ever get out an unused 'box fresh' MS200t and fire it up..... end of an era (well I guess it will be when it conks out). I also chose the occasion to be the first time I have ever used Aspen. I found some in the agri merchants next door to where I work. Aspen smells kinda nice - but I resisted the urge to taste it. Saw ran lovely wonder how long it will be before the carb plays up

Glad you enjoyed the experience. Only done 5 parkruns myself, but I think its great. I am toying with cycling there as well (but its all uphill home, so I would probably gib that bit all call in a car / wife / bike rack combo!)

The medical profession has considered me as to being in fine health following the raft of tests they ran on following abandoning beta blockers. My bp was something stupid like 150 over 90 when it was measured two weeks ago, but this is now at a normal 130 over 80, so thats good. I did only one mid week run last week (And about 50k on the bike), but was pleased to get a 25:07 on saturday, so 24:?? is now firmly in the sights. Might start pushing myself a little harder now it seems my modified heart is unlikely just to give up the ghost!

Back with a vengeance after my one week of exile from competing. Celebrated by coming sixth in the ‘old git – male 40-44’ category, with a time of 25:49. Only ran with 55 others…. Strong blustery wind to complement the horizontal rain. Nice! :-)

Here's to a speedy recovery. Mind you don't bugr it up again whilst 'camping' though! I didn't Parkrun last week. Volunteered instead. Got issued with a short training course and a barcode scanner, which was OK as I was happy to have a task with the least possible responsibility. Just imaging if you are dishing out the place number barcodes and you dropped the stack all over the floor - nightmare. Back at it for this saturday. Been doing a few 5k runs and 25k cycles to ease back in gently.

Hoping the recovery is swift, I guess if you are still mobile that is at one thing.... I put my back 'out' for about three weeks once - couldn't do a damn thing except stand up - couldn't lie flat on the floor or anything. when I did sleep it was leaning stupidly across a kitchen chair. That was by far the worst three weeks of my life. I swore that I would look after myself properly after that. One night it just popped back in like magic, and i have abused my back ever since. C'est la vie Whats the cycle event you are preparing for?

Hmmmm, saw the picture of your ankle in the run/cycle/swim thread...... looks nasty - whats the prognosis? Hopefully you arn't looking at an extended period of watching daytime TV!

I have to say that the race director gets the results up bloomin quickly. I got the text from Parkrun at just gone Ten o'clock, which was only 15 mins after the last runner came in. Don't think I will be running next Saturday due to some Beta Blocker issues I am currently having (why 'drug cheats' actually choose to take 'em is beyond me - I hate them). I have offered my services as volunteer instead - 'give something back' and all that...... Keep on runnin'

8th of June Parkrun: 27:12 Nice conditions for running up hills today. :-)

And the other thing is hills. I live on the edge of the souths downs, so hills are fairly unavoidable..... but the Eastbourne Parkrun seems to be uphill ALL THE WAY. This is quite impressive as the start is in the same place as the finish. I am tempted to run it in reverse one evening after work, just to see if it seems down hill all the way - somehow I think it wont be! Anyway, I would have thought that running down an incline would be 'nicer' than running up one (within reason) but in practice, I think my favorite thing is to run up a gentle hill - Am I normal?

Regarding the quest for PBs: Obviously training and diet pay a massive part of improvement, but I was wondering the effect the weather has. Do you reckon it varies from person to person, is is it generally accepted that some weathers are better than others? I understand that athletes do high altitude training and all that, but is mid winter cold better than mid summer heat. Is a still day worse than breezy. Do you reckon wet is better than dry? I guess any extreme is not going to be that helpful. So far, my fledgeling running career has had quite constant conditions, so what do I expect as the year /seasons progres? cheers - Matt

ahhhh I see.... You were 30 off from your PB rather than you knocked 30 seconds off your PB. So sorry for the misdirected congratulations. John, Hope you get better soon - good to have some light hearted competition.

Congrats, Rupe, on your hard earnt 30s. It was by far the hottest I have run in today (not that it was that hot, but it seemed airless) Slogged away to get a PB of 27:42, that I am totaly delighted with :-) Right up until the home straight I feared that I wouldn't be able to improve on last week, but drew on an untapped stash of stamina - Good job I had a few Ryvita at breakfast.

Adding weights? awsome. I currently shed as much ballast as possible when I attempt to run - including taking my socks off and considering getting a lighter watch :-)

The Banana bike is from the Falcon stable. I prefer the white and yellow over the Raleigh black based colour scheme. I only got it a few years back (post operation incentive to keep active) and used it to cycle to and from work (which was madness really considering at the time I had a company vehicle at my disposal). Its nicely original (except, as with so many old bikes, its been converted to single gear). I wouldn't know where to start looking when it came to getting a modern bike (TBH I would be certainly looking at a rather tight lipped other half - boom boom). REF: Parkrun. I have taken in a few jog-ettes during the week, and shall be taking another stab tomorrow - aiming (as advised) to knock just a few more seconds off my total. All the best in your endeavours...

Bit quiet on the Parkrun front this week - Maybe there was something good on telly this morning....... Anyway, 25th May, and I managed to hit three targets this week. #1 Come in sub 30 mins. #2 Not be the last bloke this time - haha. #3 get a PB - shaved a bit off my previous time, came in at 28:04. As John K reckoned though, how can it be so hard to make such a small improvement. I did manage to dust off the vintage banana bike from the attic during the week, and did a few km on that (didn't want to put the running muscles into spasm with the shock of too much activity). Now, that London to Brighton night ride starts to look mighty tempting....

A bit of practice and I think it should get presentable. I had no idea how quick I was until the figs were sent to my phone. At about 1.5K I did have a bit of a stitch really high up on my left hand side, a bit like at the top of my left lung. every time I tried to up my pace a bit it really hurt. There was one point where I practically was running on the spot - never actually stopped though (Glad it wasn't on the right hand side - I reckon I would have stopped running and never tried again!).

Good on you John for sticking with it. I have always enjoyed a bit of cycling, but I never really 'got' running (when I was a kid I was told in no uncertain terms not at all). Running always used to make feel really awful. Turns out, having tried recently it I really enjoy it. The Parkrun was superbly organised - I can't believe it is free.

Hope the ride goes well, and good on you for supporting. I take it BHF is the British Heart Foundation. I was on the receiving end of spectacular open heart surgery almost exactly two years ago. Their pre-ride info may not be the best, but believe me, their pre and post operation information is pure gold

First attemt at Parkrun: 30:12 (also the first time I have done 5K) 13 seconds off sub 30 mins :-( - next week I will not be forgetting to take a watch. Cracking fun.

The ol' legs seem to have stood up the last nights run. I think I will do the same route at about the same pace tonight. Maybe midweek I shall have some beers and a 'ruby' an hour or to before setting off -see how well that 'lengthens my stride'! Cheers :-)

Kind words .... I have done a short jog this evening in the East Sussex rain. According to google maps it was 2.6 miles (just over 4k i guess). I borrowed a pair of trainers from my wife (black and pink, hmmmm) Did a time of 27 mins (which was better than I was expecting). Probably need to get my own shoes (i wonder which type - do you reckon they have the equivalent of Stihl Vs Husky threads for trainers on running forums?)
