  1. I think the 288 might I got a friend here that might have parts I'll call him tomorrow if ya want???
  2. Craobh

    Whoa lol

Sir I am not questioning your skills in any way at all but I very much doubt if ya spent a day falling with me that you'd not pick up something ......I'm not being big headed but I sincerly doubt if youve ever been confronted by things I have. I could learn from you I have no doubt at all. You can't go thru any working life saying ok now I know all I need to know just my opinion tho
  3. Craobh

    Whoa lol

That is very true bro.......I learnt more being the second sawyer and buckman than anything I still love to pack the saws and gas for the guys in the big league it really is awesome to see them work a tree and watch how they work things out etc. Finding guys that will teach ain't easy and actually getting them the pieces of paper to say they can teach is I'd guess even harder.
  4. Craobh

    Whoa lol

I agree with what you say there bro. It can be and is a financial drain maybe instead of refresher it could be a a skills upgrade (I can't think of a better way of typing it ) Hell since I've been on here I've learnt a hell of a lot from guys that do things differently and in some cases better than I could even attempt to do. New ideas and different thoughts are what makes the industry keep moving (not everything is good but even if something can be taken from it and refined it all good) In life itself we learn and refresh so why not in industry???
  5. Craobh

    Whoa lol

Honestly tho ya better using the hard dutchman easier to do and with the type of face used over here it'll work better. There are loads of variations and I know a few but friends of mine may have a different take and different types. It just a way of maximizing output etc etc etc but I've got it wrong lol and prob will when I go do it in next few days as never tried it on small stuff or hardwood for that matter.......there are sequoia's near here that would be perfect but the owner of them might be a wee bit upset if I fall em lol:blushing::blushing::lol:
  6. Craobh

    Whoa lol

Bro I will try and cut a soft dutch pretty soon there are variations on it but you'll see my take on it lol for what it worth lol. The cuts I use ain't fancy just things we use and been taught just another tool in the bag really.
  7. Craobh

    Whoa lol

I doubt very much that you know everything bro ..........I been cutting and falling for over 30 years and I'm still learning and I've probably cut and falled more timber than 70% of folks on here and I'd still consider myself only competent. I get the money making bit I really do but your never to old and never do ya stop learning
  8. Bro if ya slabbing with a humbolt ya doing something wrong I'd guess maybe it not open enough. I get your point with stumps tho I do and poss it cause things we cut more generally are bigger so less of a prob. I would add that east coast fallers would tend to back you guys over here tho lol and it does cause "discussions" when I am falling around home lol but I was taught in the NW so I kinda do it that way. I'm not saying your wrong just different but it is interesting
  9. We don't use grinders lol as for usable wood I'd argue with ya on that (I don't mean argue really) as the undercut I use comes from the stump but I get your theory.Chasing the hinge I'd like to see that but I'd guess it be like a kerf dutchman sorta personally I can get a tree of without doing that but other ways do interest me and it good to hear bout them.
  10. I'm guessing your talking bout the US hommies here if so you might get better info on them from my bros over the pond ......not that spud etc won't be able to help ya as he the guru in my book lol (wee book tho) I'll ask my FIL if he knows about those saws next time I yack with him.
  11. I know this was posted a good while ago but the face your talking about is the humbolt. Safest face to fell big stuff with and it will minimizw breakage and fibre pull. The tree hits the ground differently I did read a post in regards to shallow face etc. I have the upmost respect for all techs however a shallow face will increase the chances of a tree chairing on ya I was taught steep, deep and open allowing the tree to lift into the face and utilize the mechanics there in. IMO a very narrow strip of holding wood ya run the risk of losing control of the tree. I'm not talking bout manipulating the holding wood to swing the tree. Obviously if your on crap terrain eg a drop directly in front with a bank there after ya would want to manipulate to minimize pull and breakage ie. you might set the face as normal but cut off the holding wood with the top cut (I'm talking bout a humbolt here) then back the tree up (you'll still get the directional effect from the face and protection with the stump shot, sir issac does help here tho lol) and when the tree commits falling the holding wood will break off early and the tree should jump (in a manner of speaking) putting the butt in the hollow quickly allowing the rest to land on the up slope with out breaking. That may be as clear as mud lol There is another very old way that you can almost elimanate fibre pull which was (and guess still will be used) used when cutting for veneer but I WILL NOT describe it as it is dangerous and should not be used at all. I am impressed by the stump shots tho......I did go out and look today for a few I'd have to swing and do fancy things to. I found a few and I'll fall em when I get time (wife is not well at the mo and the girls are home to look after her so things a bit hectic and tense .....the girls are driving me NUTS lol) anyways keep cutting and be safe y'all
  12. I ain't gonna rate any. I will say tho that you guys do cut very low both to ground and where the top and undercut meet. Guess that the different styles here.
  13. I thought ya just might have used the big guns bro lol
  14. My missus who deals with all our insurances (and believe me you guys over here lucky in that respect ya wouldn't believe the crap we gotta go thru lol cause if we don't we get sued or ass goes straight to jail ....we pay it as I'm a coward and really don't wanna be Jackies (jack) play toy in the farm ) said just about the same as you did best of luck
  15. OUCH feel for ya there bro My old boss claimed when one of his skidders walloped a elec pole group and his payments went up alot (that was stateside tho) just a thought do you not have a union or the like here that a rep from there could maybe advise on your situation and may know if the comp your with ups payments etc really hope ya don't get screwed by this tho
  16. Yep I got a 2100 and a 2101 they not much diif (there are slight diffs but not to much) yeah the really cut and pull lol..........I am going to get one of mine shipped over as can't find one here and will get spud to talk real nice to it lol After he has I'll post a vid and you'll see the chips fly lol ......they really are the just the biz to cut with nothing ever beats em and when ya got a biggy on the deck ya walk along it and ya don't have to bend to limb it lol (I'm a lazy dude lol)
  17. yeah that a good big saw lol
  18. saws like the 2100 2101 the homelite 650 etc
  19. I bet it a shed load of fun.....hmmmm I only got the full American oh well if I'm here I'll steal some from somewhere lol What saw specs the let ya use?and is it the full monty as in limbing comp....falling comp.....bucking etc???
  20. Have any of you guys run the old muscle saws of the PNW? If so what's your thoughts compared to the saws of this era?
  21. I might think about that if I'm still here in UK .....do ya have to wear all the nice safety gear tho??? as my ppe slightly different lol
  22. cool pics of Eirinn
  23. Craobh

    Thoughts

They won't be big uns as all I got to cut is no more than 24" across the butt well I do have 3 at near 40" 55" and 60" but they are really nasty s o b's and I'll have to wait tillI get my big guns over lol but I'll do my best over the next days etc
  24. Craobh

    Thoughts

well if they don't go right I'll have to get wi-fi from the ER lol
