  1. Anyone know any old ways of stopping this bleep bleep wind as it a right PIA lol I'm getting to old to do the fallers jig:biggrin:
  2. Good advice there......You gotta start at the bottom and work up even after you get your quals you'll still need experience and that comes from "doing it" and being around folks that can do it. Learning from them. The knowlegde I gained packing gas cans and watching was and is priceless courses teach basics and no more
  3. Mac made left handers but they collectors items now worth quite a bit of money (I don't mean the Macs over here I mean Macs stateside .....were different)
  4. A full wrap will allow you more scope but saws like military riflles are made right handed lol. you'll get the hang of it just practice and patience. IMO a full wrap is a major help if you cut alot with the pushing chain ......however I have no clue how they teach here.....been a long time since I cut commercially over here best of luck with your tickets btw
  5. Try the hard head wedges you'll not bust em so easy. If not cut your own outta what you got ie face slabs etc ......it cheap and they disposable. I never used hi lift if a tree need that much blacksmithing I done something wrong somewhere. .........Seriously tho if you gotta wallop them that hard so they bust there gotta be something else not quite right. A friend of mine said "Son I know all there is about wedges and wedging ......they make you sweat ......then handled me the axe and walked of laughing
  6. look into an ILA buddy
  7. If your budget is lower then you might think of the big red saw as an alternative (jonsered) Imo you won't get a husky for that money buddy not being rude please. What are you looking to do with it as well it does kinda depend on the saw you buy. IMO only home user saws are either over priced or a heap of junk. If you can bide your time going for a better one will pay of in the end. I'm not being rude or calling into question any ability but if you see some of the older muscle saws steer clear, they are usually a bit cheaper but some do not have modern chain brakes on them. Also they are designed to really run bigger bars (yep they do make the small bars) and if ya eg put a 18" on a 2101 2100 etc it will cut but really really fast ......maybe to fast. Sorry if this seems rude it not intended to be just from my experience (yep I do have 2101 395 and a 3120 so I do know about them.) a 254 or a 55 should I'd think do all required or look to jonsered (they are husky just diff style) hope this helpful
  8. The monkey puzzle tree is also called the living fossil ......another piece of useless info (I'm a mine of that lol)

    Old tools

I love old tools too They all have a story to tell I've got a reasonable collection of axes, crosscut and buck saws I used them ......hard work but hearing a good saw singing in the wood is I think a magical thing
  10. Craobh

    Whoa lol

yep it a useful tech the block just gives you more chance of swinging it further if that makes sense. I guess it just another trick in the bag to get the job done. I'd suspect it not taught over here (which is cool) as misuse can lead to disaster and injury. I'd guess most of the tricks and techs I been taught would be seriously frowned on here. I guess where I learned to fall we had not so many "toys" at our disposal usually just saw, wedges and stubby so you had to learn to get round things to get the job done. Some of the things I seen I'd never use and would boot some one up the rear (very hard) if I saw them trying it
  11. Wind is a major thing as it not the best idea to try and work against mother nature (usually she wins) but sometimes you gotta get on with it. The pressure your under to get timber on the ground as if you don't it could hold up an entire operation. In an ideal world you wait and in an ideal world your boss will let you wait. However the world is not ideal so.....you scratch your head and get the job done as safely as you can. I'm speaking about logging here Oh and I to have climbed in ivy covered crap and well it makes you a believer real quick when your spurs ain't gripping. Hence why I only climb if I really have to as previously said age does tend to make you wiser (or less stupid)
  12. Every season has it's own challenges ......from heat (ok not in the UK) to cold, snow etc ......falling trees is a dangerous game and I'm still learning. One thing I'd say tho .....all fallers learn the fallers jig ..........
  13. Craobh

    Whoa lol

Sorry was trying to be funny with the squished bit..........seriously tho I would dred to think of any one trying this with out knowing what they doing......I guess may be I should hush up bout these things my apologies
  14. Craobh

    Whoa lol

LOL and best advice don't get head to head with this one either lmao you might get squished and the only thing gonna beat ya to the hosp is the headlights on the ambulance .......oh and I guess that the HSE might want a word too
  15. Craobh

    Whoa lol

Basically a block hard up in the face on one side ........you cut the holding wood of that side leaving more on the other .......when tree falls it will pull to the side with more hinge and the block acts like a pivot ......you may here it called a step dutchman too Please don't any one try it it used to swing trees to lay on the lead. maybe not well described but I can show it in practice lol
  16. I had to leave my toys stateside lol..................I'd get locked up here if I had em lol
  17. Sounds like he making money and well he ain't breaking the law ........well I don't think so (I'm not up with the law here as not long back) If he selling green firewood well it kinda up to the buyer to eh......check it not hard really lol.......saying that comes to mind......Your eye is your merchant. As for 8 hr day lol I'd love to have one of those and would bite yer hand off to work for a couple of hours and make money lol
  18. Craobh

    Whoa lol

Oh buddy you on the same page as me ........I have seen folks lose a tree doing the swedish dance tech ........it far far safer to use other methods......to me boring is just a tool in the fallers bag of tricks. I ain't being big headed but the other day I totally shocked a guy by swinging a tree using a hard dutchman .....he wanted to put ropes etc on it (all good and well I guess) but very time consuming and I only climb if I have to lol
  19. I didn't mean it wasn't tragic ......however things reported stateside well don't believe all ya read. Reporters over there do tend to go for the dramatic as usually there a lawsuit hovering somewhere.
  20. Craobh

    Whoa lol

No guys lol face sweep etc not what y'all think lol ......no I'm back home in UK just trained over the pond. Sweeping is plunging the face (I generally used it if cutting for veneer as stump jumping -the old way lol- ain't cool or safe, but it still done. and taking the heart then backing in up......side notching is used on leaners .......humbolt and swanson type of faces. The GOL lol is the Game of logging lol......I'll put it politely doing the swedish cutting dance lol.......you get a fairly good ball cap tho for going, oh and the lunch not bad either lmao. I guess that I do speak a different lingo lol all be it with a brit accent lol. If any of you folks need translation of over the pond terms I'll do my best. I'm just used to falling afaif amount of timber per day but looks as tho I don't speak the lang here and I'm a dinosaur too as it all seems to be buncher falled here.
  21. Not trying to be rude but pray tell what the big deal with that tree??? It not that big and if his girthing is right then it just over 16" .....from the pics I couldn't see any major lean nor probs Maybe you guys will jump on me for this ......yep I'm new here and not an arborist but if I went to that tree then 20mins later it be all over .....12mins of that would be carrying the saw and gas jugs lol ......I really fail to see any probs in falling that??? No fancy cuts needed (ie dutchmen -hard or soft- siswheels etc) ifit is leaning and concern bout it chairing then side notch it ...and back it up the worst that could happen if it ain't leaning badly is it side scars if that a worry then snip the corners. sorry if that seems rude but I really fail to see all the drama over here that seems to go with falling trees???
  22. I like your reasoning .......if folks going to criti others be constructive. just my opinion.
  23. P I A equals things that are in the way .........lmo folks love to use fancy words it kinda impresses ..........not lol
  24. Rules are different stateside buddy comparisons aren't kinda possible OHSA isn't like the HSE here nor do we have the euro stuff either.
  25. Craobh

    Whoa lol

I've no clue where to post this so here goes lol I've read a number of posts etc on here and holy moly the terminology this side of the pond is so different .....I must admit even tho I'm from here alot of the tech speak makes me feel like I'm from another planet lol........ I am a faller (fully cert) but the ways you guys talk about falling trees make me think that it would be a pointless to even try to do certs here as I doubt seriously that I or any instructor would be talking the same language. I would find it extremely useful if some one could explain why there seems to be so much bore cutting promoted over here as back home that a GOL thing Not trying to be controversial but has everything gone euro here??? On that subject is there no backing up side notching face sweep done here and does anyone use the humbolt and swanson ??? Just looking for kinda feedback or views and translations
