  1. humph southern boys lmao .......The only welsh and scots I know with a sun tan are those who been on a sunbed lol...........rain scald and in need of a welder is more common
  2. The curly shavings lol that's what we can noodling lol as they look like noodles lol ......good advice tho
  3. In truth imo (I'll get jumped on lol) there isn't a total all round saw......each has it's pro's each it's cons .....everyone has their favourite and loves. It really depends on what you wanna do with it??? I'm not being rude or trying to teach ya to suck eggs (that a different thread lol) but you want a more powerful saw ok cool.....Why? .....you looking for a saw for ground work ....falling and bucking? one to climb with (yep I know I'm not an arborist and climb differently)? one to limb with? etc etc. The bigger the saw the heavier it is (yeah no brainer there) ok it will rip bigger and pull a bigger bar .....cool maybe!!! eg Do ya want to have to go up a tree lugging a 365 etc ??? I climb (as rarely as I can) with a 372 pulling a 26" bar if I'm topping out. It not the easiest trust me. Ok put a smaller bar on even a 365 etc well sounds good .....but it wiil cut maybe a tad quicker than you expect which may not be that cool. I do get a bit irked (but hey it a free world) when folks want bigger saws and then stick small wiggle sticks on them......they not meant for that!!! you'll either blow the pot (maybe depending on how it tuned) or you'll cut so quick accuracy may be an issue. I am in no way calling into question ability etc just trying to be balanced. In the fair time I've been cutting and I've seen so many folks always wanting bigger and more powerful saws and I've seen em get hurt!!! badly!!! trust me on that. I'm gonna ask this straight ......have you handled bigger saws with more power and grunt? Not wanting an arguement but if not then think about it I've falled bucked etc etc things up to 30" with a ported 357xp it light got grunt and is very easily handled Buddy you can spend alot of money etc on saws and not get what you want just figure out what your likely to do and go from there as time goes by then go bigger etc time and experience can't be circumvented jump on me guys if y'all wish to lol I am no saw geek ( I break em I get my saw guru to fix em) but I've used and handled alot of saws and think I know a wee bit lol (but opinions do vary) above all be safe and keep cutting
  4. Buddy google some of the forestry extension groups stateside (eastern) and email them they'll point you in the direction your looking for and they have experience of it. The Black Locust is .......Robinia pseudoacacia which is what we grow ...well try to keep in check really lol
  5. Black locust is one of the best firewoods . It is hard as hell on wheels lol it stinks when green.....green being just a word lol as it ain't green lol. It is one of the most durable woods going. Furniture guys love it cause of its grain etc .....so do flooring guys and they pay top $ for it to. On the downside lol if it ain't split green ya might cuss alot at it lol and don't leave it lying as it'll go so hard you really will cuss. The bark and leaves are toxic so do beware there (where ya plant it etc). It grows quicker than hell on a hand cart very invasive so don't plant it anywhere near slow growers it'll eh well choke em out lol. You really do have to season it but it will burn wet however it not the best imo to burn it in an open fire as it can pop making you brown ya pants and causing hot coals to burn ya house down too. If you wat the best from it use it in well coaled up fire.....you won't get flame from it really and it is/can be a PIA to lite on it's own lol. It burns for a heck of a long time even if ya think it out .......it ain't lol. The harder ya cut it the faster it grows lol it can be a real S O B if it gets somewhere it shouldn't be ......and inevitably it will. Forrester's our way hate the stuff lol and steam has been know to come out there ears if ya tell em yer planting it lol. All in all it good but takes work (I know we got bout 50 acres of it lol)
  6. It was Rob that asked in the thread WHOA lol.......I found a vid posted on you tube done by the STS guys. Not the same but as near as I could find. I'm the same it just another trick in the bag if needed lol.....but like you rarely use it these days.......however lol I'll have to fairly soon...got a schoolie to fall which some dork attached a wire fence to which I'll have to go above. Ideally I'd like to split it and fall it in two halves from the ground lol but as I said the bleeping fence in the way.....oh and a drop of bout 12' to a creek lol. The creek I'd cope with if the fence wasn't there. So up I'll go lol. I don't like falling off spurs (I'll do it to top out for a skyline etc lol) As you said it easier when ya have to handle a bigger saw and bar of boards than spurs. Anyway if you can add anything it will be helpful another perspective always cool in the use of boards. I think really Rob was looking to find out how the put in. The timby guys do it a tad different lol but that vid was the best I could do, it's not something I've ever ha\d to try and explain in words , I just do it lol
  7. Not much better up here either
  8. Your username buddy it made me smile as it a term we use back home lol
  9. Mendip put it better than me lol
  10. if your gonna split it and your bolts are only 3x6 I'd just swing the axe. Not being rude but setting the splitter up etc will take you longer than the axe. We used to split a cord an hour like that (well bolts 16" x whatever ) if they won't split noodle them then split em
  11. The states buddy we cut quite a bit of locust on our place (when I'm not falling comercially) There are leaflets available on the subject of locust. Be aware though it very invasive grows like hell on wheels is as hard as hell as well and you'll have to make sure it really well seasoned as if not it'll pop like a rifle shot hope this helpful
  12. The timber industry over here is so different and from what I've read so far totally screwed up lol
  13. True but depends how they been originally cut buddy
  14. It way to far buddy
  15. Did you say redwood you mean sequoia ??? back home you'd get shot for burning that lol they go for high price saw logs lol
  16. Scotland buddy lol
  17. That good sound honest advice imo
  18. Craobh

    Whoa lol

http://wildfirelessons.net/documents/Scratchline_Issue16.pdf There a pdf bout the grades etc
  19. On that subject if anyone near me then I got a lot of brash from around 100 plus trees if anyone would like to come get it and chip it ......It bout 70% hardwood brash and 30% softwood .....some of the brash is bout 2" dia
  20. That idea may well float buddy, there are many places big vehicles can't get in. If you can get the chip at good price (assuming you don't chip yourself) then go for it Good luck and best wishes it cool to see some one thinking and trying to make life better
  21. Craobh

    Whoa lol

IMHO lol the different grades won't float here the industry not big enough (that isn't a dig btw) maybe in the tree surgery area it would tho.
  22. Hmmmmmmmmmmm
  23. Craobh

    Whoa lol

I'd suspect Rob it was more to do with staying in business and getting the work done
  24. Guys I had a person where we are at who installed a wood stove and he told me the reason he did it was he could pick up firewood for free.........I actually was stunned by this statement. He every time I'm falling keeps asking what I'm doing with the wood. I 100% agree with what's been said and from my point I sure as hell am not busting my butt falling, limbing, bucking etc for some one to think they can get it for free......... May be it should also be noted that lifting wood that has fallen could be treated as theft (well here in Scotland and in the states where we live it is). Wood is a\ good way of heating but it ain't free unless you have your own trees and do it all yourself.
