  1. yeah.... bit of character building never hurt anyone! but seriously, like I said above all he was doing was raking up pine cones, he was aware of what was happening and I had my eye on everybody and where they were! Valmet7- I'm self employed and work for a few people dotted around the area, are you a climber as well yourself? cheers
  2. Sorry pressed wrong button! I am chipping too close but I hate taking the machine off the truck and just relying on a couple logs to keep the machine still as devon is quite a hilly area! Have emailed the netting company explaining my situation and am awaiting a reply for what they think would suit me best. Cheers!
  3. Cheers for the compliment white noise, a lot of graft and saving has gone into it! Yes I am chip
  4. Gray git due to access we were dragging along that path he ran along and burning it all, at the time he was only raking up pine cones as a time filler job. Atree- the stem stayed in one place but when cutting down the stump one ring took off, across the path, dropped down through the garden, straight through the hedge in to next door and luckily fell into a deep patch of nettles!
  5. Hi guys, a quick video of the last day of removing this 100ft tree in South Devon, definitely my biggest takedown yet, and one of the most enjoyable, nothing more satisfying than sending down BIG GEAR! (had to leave so many large diameter stubs on the stem as all of the bosses ground saws short of the 660 had gone bang and wasn't fair on the 200 to munch through such thick slabs)
  6. Thanks guys, never crossed my mind to put a lid of sort on the top Will definitely look in to that, and thanks Ed for the link, will do some online shopping tonight, but not for the £151 which your link wanted, the mrs would kill me! Cheers!
  7. Hi all, Should probably apologise about all of the questions ive got about the tw 125, im only 21 and only really used greenmechs before with a very limited knowledge on engines etc. Attached is a pic of my setup, and you can imagine that once the shute is spun round so I am chipping into the landy, it is extremely close to the truck and any sort of leafy chip just gets blown straight out over the sides in to the road etc etc. and it is only the actual 'wood' chip which stays inside the back. I have only really chipped into the back of a canter or veccy before where they are much further away so haven't had to fix this problem yet. Having everything blow around not only makes it a bugger to clear up at the end of the day but also as the truck gets more and more full, the chip pile is a lot closer to the spout and a lot more is being through out the side door. It is also constantly covering the Honda petrol engine in leaf matter which cant be doing it much good in my head. Any ideas on how to fix this please? at the mo I am un hitching and pushing the chipper back a few feet but A) this is a pain in the ass and B) the chipper has no brakes fitted so im relying on a couple logs to stop my chipper from taking off down the road! Thanks, Ben
  8. Hi y'all, Got a 2002 125 with a replaced honda engine on it, my own work at the mo is quiet and the jobs that are on are quite happy to leave brash on site (ideal!) however chipper is sat up and I start it up every other week. Recently the engine flashes up fine but then conks out (not ideal) 15 seconds ish later. It is then a beggar to start and I end up walking away from it! However, if I drag the machine around the yard abit or take it up the street and back on landy it will start up fine and run smoothly. Has it been stationary for too long and settled or something else? Also, the small plastic fuel filter just before fuel enters the engine has only the smallest amount of fuel in it at any time, is this normal? Cheers boys, Ben
  9. quick vid of topping and lopping in hope cove, south devon from a month or two ago. Be prepared for cheesey pop music, an inside joke for the lads I work with!
  10. was in plymbridge woods the week just gone and they were taking larch out there, I realise its not seasoned but thought worth a mention as only located in Plymouth!
  11. mmm thanks for the responses guys! I forgot to add that the sides of my truck are aluminium so non magnetic. I have been thinking since I posted this and the only way I can think of covering them up is by lugging a tarp around and chucking it over the truck on the job, not only would that look extremely dodgy but im also not prepared to have to deal with a potentially soaking wet tarp and try and find somewhere to keep it at the end of the long day. his job his truck is what I will be going for, and if that isn't possible for that day/job then he will have to try and look the other way!
  12. Hi all, I'm a self employed guy doing my own work and have had my truck sign written like you do, somebody that I do a lot of subby work for was told I was having it done before hand just in casual chat on a break, and didn't have anything to say about it. Another bloke I subby for is absolutely fine with it. Anyway, after getting the tipping back covered, he has text me out of nowhere telling me I need to cover the writing up whilst I work for him else 'it will be causing issues'. A) how am I supposed to cover up the writing now for the 1/2 days a week I work for him B) I realise that I am effectively working for him whilst I am there, but at the end if the day I'm self employed and he could have brought this up beforehand and there's not much I can do now? Hopefully you guys know what is the right answer or thing to be done as according to this guy 'everyone he knows insists on covering signwriting' Cheers
  13. Dead wooding in Salcombe, Devon.
  14. Went out to look at my first real urban job yesterday, where I will need to back the landy and chipper onto footpath that a lot of people use to walk from their residential areas into the centre of the town, probably a good 10 min walk from the centre. The footpath has guards along every street crossing to prevent cars but luckily there is a gateway onto the path close to where I am working. The path is wide enough to get the truck down and should just be able to squeeze past in a pram. Will a full chapter 8 setup with switched on groundsmen watching out for any pedestrians be acceptable enough or do I need to notify the council and ask for the footpath to be closed for the day? As I said, only previously worked in back gardens and the like on my own jobs. Attached is a map and the footpath is called filham moor lane if that helps paint more of a picture of what im trying to describe. Thanks chaps, Ben
  15. as mentioned above, the 540's seem to be made of plastercine! had one since October last year and its on its 3rd handle and even then this one has been taped up! the second handle broke after falling out of a small magnolia bush! Currently in being fixed after it was accidently dropped off a wall fair enough that it didn't survive that one! but when its here working I love it and much prefer over a 201
  16. Price was right and I have 3 empty cattle sheds available now we have sold up the last of our livestock. Trees hedges logs and rough land care!
  17. Went and had a look, needs a new gear cable and 2 punctures fixed but walked away with it for £375! Tidy machine, a turner Trojan. Will see if it was a good or bad descision in the next few months!
  18. Thanks guys, and Alec don't I know it, just spent a grand on a whole new fuel pump and turbo! Mmmm, they're unknown on age but bodywork is all tidy enough to suggest it's in good shape. Has a kohler engine and it's advertised for £450. Needs a new gear selector cable which sounds straightforward enough. I think it will be a good investment for the future and hopefully bring me plenty of moolar in in return, was just checking to see if you thought I was going too quick too fast.
  19. Alright all, I'm 21 and started my own business (que laughter) I've worked and saved my way up and now have a nice 110 landy and TW125 chipper to get me started as well as the saws etc and enough work for 2/3 days a week at the moment. I've seen a presentable 30' flail mower for sale for an amount that certainly wouldn't break the bank, but don't have the work for it at the moment. Is it better to expand and buy now when I can in case the job requiring it turns up in 6 months time (especially now whilst I'm young and don't have a mortgage or kids etc) Or hang on, and just buy any gear should the need for it arise whenever that may be? Odd topic, but looking for your more experienced opinions as you would have been in my position yourselves in the past! Cheers, Ben.
  20. If you think that is bad... We have been doing a job peace mill just outside Kingsbridge now since the summer, removing probably 7 or 8 dirty great montereys, on the side of a open stretch of 60mph road..... the matey before hand agreed to do it just for the wood, put a 1 tonne winch cable up, felled one and removed it, never came back and left his winch cable up the next 2 trees... if that fell had gone wrong the consequences..... attached is some pics of the first tree in the line
  21. Thanks guys but unfortunately it had been sold, ah well!
  22. Yes I'm hoping to look at the one from Exeter. Thanks for all the info, pays to do your research now than when you've exchanged your money! Cheers
  23. Hi all, Looking at buying my first chipper, a camon c250 and although people on here will probably tell me to steer away from it, for the price I think it is perfect for me and my business. Question: How easily are parts available? How easy are blades to come across? Thanks, Ben
  24. Not ideal I know, left college in June last year (yes, I'm a 'college boy') set my own business up on a rate of £180 a day just for myself on average for an 8-5 day. Saved up, bought a tipping 110 landy in December, looking at a chipper tomorrow so hopefully I will be away then doing my own work 3/4 days a week, and the amount that I am learning with the remaining company means in the long run for my career, £60 for an 8-4 day isn't too bad
  25. im 21, saws, climbing kit, lowering kit, tickets, insurance, 3 years experience, do my own private weekend work as self employed, work 5 days a week for 2 different companies in Devon, on £60 a day for both of them! one has said if I switch and work 3 days a week for him (and 2 days a week for the other bloke) he will give me a £4 a day increase!!
