  1. Hi all, In the very early stages of looking at doing some tree work for a supermarket in Essex, and so am looking for the requirements that come with that, IE: I currently only have 2 mill public liability, I expect they shall wish me to have perhaps 10 mill cover? etc What other requirements are there that you know of? or even any advice that you would have for me. Haven't spoken directly to anybody yet, but have been shown the tree report and asked if I would be interested. This could potentially be my first big 'break' from doing Mrs muggins apple tree into doing bigger, more 'beneficial' work so although it is slightly intimidating, I feel it is something I need to seriously consider. Also, if the work did come about, would be looking to hire a couple guys, with van and chipper for potentially 2 days work, they would need to remove wood chip and would get to keep all of the timber, as I don't think my landy would appreciate the trip up from Devon. Cheers
  2. Hi all, I have bought a rosselli 700 grizzly saw bench mainly to be able to whizz through the smaller stuff, and also save my back a bit from general every day logging. I can already see the advantages of it, having filled two 8ft tractor buckets in about half an hour whilst still getting used to the machine. Have any of you got one? If so, have you any tips or advice for me to help get the best out of the machine? It is my first investment which isn't directly aimed at the tree surgery side of my business, and one which I hope will do me well! thanks
  3. Thanks gentleman, I'm aware and also believe in not taking advantage of other peoples misfortune but at the same time, it was poor conditions and price should reflect that over what it would have cost him several months ago. Thanks for replies, will sort it out in a min, cheers
  4. Had somebody ring me up other day, his leylandiis root plates were moving around a good 6-8 inches in the wind, and wanted them down to a level there and then so there was no rosk of failing and going onto house, or through 2 BT wires which ran through it and fed houses next door. I drove 50mins to him at 4pm after a days work, anchor in to a neighbouring beech and spike up each one just as it is about to get dark, took in big bits to take the sail effect out and so I could get out of there, was probably only up in the air for 30/40mins, and came down with all BT wires safe and risk to house minimised. Organised to go back the following week and tidy up etc. Should probably add he was advised back in summer 14 to have the tops taken out as unsure about how stable the roots were in the devon bank, combined with neighbours concerns but decided against doing so. How much would you charge? I haven't done call out work for myself before and am struggling to price it as was only actually working for 30/40 mins, all be it one of the most dangerous jobs ive done so far. Cheers
  5. thank you for the reply, will do that now!
  6. Hi all, I currently have a stein cambium saver and a spare hitch climber pulley and want to know the safest/ best way of attaching the pulley to the C.S, shall I use mallions like said in other threads or larksfoot on a small tape sling? Keen to do it as cheaply as I can with the bits that I have and a few small bits should I need to buy them. At the mo, I just clip it on with a karabiner but know that that is not a good, long term solution, Cheers
  7. Chipper was fine this morning, now infeed won't feed in unless we have lodged a stick on to the button, is this bad for the machine at all? Haven't got the tools onsite to undo te electrical box and take a look in, it used to do this maybe once a month, but wOuld fix itself after pressing in the red button, hoping it's not too bad
  8. Went from modbury to Dartmouth, to noss mayo to loddiswell and flew up most of the hills, apart from the ones which kill a 20yr old, heavy defender with oversized wheels! Last fuel pump packed up due To water ingress so going to move the fuel filler to just behind the wheel arch in the 'dry area' as a precaution and have a look through all the pipes, lift pump etc when I get a chance!
  9. Think I may get blown away at this rate in south devon, sit tight boys!
  10. May sound odd to some, but all day today the landy flew everywhere, better then it has for a month or two, all I did was put £20 more diesel in and a bottle of injector cleaner in the tank and somehow? Fingers crossed it stays well! Cheers
  11. Will do, hoping its just a pipe or something cheap, although if it is turbo or fuel pump will both be covered by warranty luckily, just hassle and also means a day off work as truck-less! not sure about the wastegate jon, bit beyond my level of expertise, I have an uncle who has worked on landys most of his life, can tell you what size spanner is needed for each job without looking, hopefully he can have a look at the girl on Thursday! cheers
  12. all pipes seem ok but look a tad tatty, will check for de laminating in daylight as soon as I can. it sounds strange, but I just drove it from cold to the garage and it was as bad as described before, just dies on every hill and I am a gear down on normal, put an extra £20 diesel in and a bottle of STP, switched on again and it was like it was a different truck, pulled up a steep hill in third after playing in some puddles. Replaced the top sender unit last Feb too Could it be something settling whilst its parked up? as stupid as it sounds im concidering driving somewhere tomorrow morning, switching off for 2 minutes, and then driving to work after that, probably sounds stupid to all of you, but it somehow seems to do the trick? it is a land rover
  13. update, went to see the tree, it was a scatty, ivy clad oak which he wants 'pollarded', have to drag brash garage, past garden shed, green house, chicken cages, past a scrap heap combined with the most amount of dog turds per sq ft of lawn I have ever seen. hmmmmm!
  14. Hi all, Basically my defender has decided it doesn't like driving up hills, you'll have to bear with me as im not that technical with them. It will be singing along quite happily on the flat and down hill, but then when you hit an incline, there is no power at all, you change down a gear like usually, no response, change down again and you may be lucky and it pulls through a bit juddery or worse comes to the worse you end up going up the hill in first. Ive found im a gear down every hill at the moment, and this is with the truck empty! If your going uphill in say 2nd gear, foot flat to the floor, the revvs almost bottom out way before they should and turbo is sounding but no power, just absolutely gutless! Replaced the fuel pump in Feb 2014 at quite a cost, new turbo, lift pump, all new filters etc, but it is behaving now as it did when the pump went last year. any ideas or tips? I've checked all hoses etc and cant see any leaks or splits, and have undone the lid on the bottom of the filter to see if there is water or anything in the filter. Cheers
  15. Had a chap ring up back in the week and asked if I could ring him back on Saturday (yesterday) to say when I could come around to view a tree. As Saturday jobs go, what was supposed to be a 2pm finish didn't finish until 5pm (whilst you're here, can you re split that, etc) and didn't get round to ringing him. I didn't like to ring today being a Sunday, as my thought on it is it would be ok to ring if I knew the bloke fairly well, or if he had mentioned he was free sunday etc, but my friend was on the other side of the scale and doesnt believe that in this day in age, that sunday is a day of rest etc. What are your views? I have nothing against working sundays, but didn't know what the majority's opinion would be? Cheers
  16. was reading this thread for advice before sending another, slightly more snotty Email to a late payer... decided I better actually check before I did it whether he has decided to pay me nearly 3 months after completing the job... looked online and the money went in yesterday! Its my first customer who has been a joke to deal with, and have learnt my lesson to simply walk away from these types next time!
  17. First time I've seen proper frost this year, and even then the puddles aren't even frozen, pre heated the landy, jumped in, cough cough cough and now the battery is too flat for any good, brilliant! Hope everyone else's Mondays are better than mine!
  18. No, lifted the whole thing in one... Just! No pics of the trailer, just your standard 14ft ifor williams joby! Cheers
  19. yep jon, straight up onto the trailer, rolled off the forks and made a hole in the wooden floor yeah johns well, down to one horse though as of this week I think, still out with the Dartmoor twice a week though!
  20. I'll understand technology one day...
  21. 7740 lifting a lump of oak and my grandfathers kubota!
  22. pair of airstreams purchased off of jonesy, should be here tomorrow!
  23. I searched for this but couldn't find anything posted before. How long does your PPE last you? I know, how long is a piece of string but... Ive gone through 3 pairs of Oregon waipou trousers in about 2 years, now gone on to SIP and although comfier the pocket zip has already gone bust after 2 months. I've used Stein explorer boots since day 1 and find them really comfortable but have gone through 2 pairs in 2 years, mother was yelling tonight as she thought I had worn my boots upstairs, in actual fact the muddy tracks were a result of my soaking wet and plastered in mud SOCKS! the sole comes just comes straight off after a while. Is there anything anyone does to prolong their ppe? Its important stuff and I wouldn't work without any of it, but at the same time its cost me £885 in 2.5 years!
  24. I do some work sometimes for a company who originally called themselves what the utility company call themselves now. His truck with 'P80 ARB' looks awesome though especially when dragging the tracked chipper! much better than the copycats haha
  25. I would say it's 60/40 to the 395! Would love a 3120 but it sounds like it may be too big for everyday work and is too big an invesment to be sat in the shed for months on end, whilst the 395 would be a Much more versatile, user friendly saw. It would be a no brainer if I didn't have to potentially cut this up.... That's my 181 with 28inch bar being dwarfed by it! Cheers
