    Not sure I'm going to get 10 pieces done before this demo. But here's an owl picking off a rat cross bred with a mouse.lol I wanted the tail feathers to be wider and the wings and the neck and head to be a little bigger too. But the log lent itself to what it is and there wasn't quite enough timber all round to get it how I would have liked. So here's number 3.

    I have a carving demonstration on the 10th of December it's the 1st I'm going to have done at a garden centre. I'm hoping to take about 10 pieces down to sell on the day. Here's the 1st 2 so far more oiling to do and a little more sanding work to the kingfisher as I'm not happy with how dark he's gone after oiling.

    Really nice Si. I'm desperate to have a big fell come up so I can do a decent bench. Really need to invest in a mill. I'm trying to train my second climber to carve at the mo. Once I get him hooked I'll tap him up to go halves on one.

    Seventeen years on the saws is plenty experience enough to just crack on yourself really. I if I were you watch a few carving vids on you tube and crack on with a few mushrooms. Try a few other more tricky carvings and go from there. If you enjoy doing mushrooms and stools etc then poss think about getting yourself a lighter weight saw with a dime tip carving bar. It makes life a lot easier find some small figurines and try and copy them. As you progress you may wish to refine them then it's time to invest in an angle grinder with flap sanding discs. Possibly a die grinder and dremel. It really boils down to practice.

    No it was from a cracked out cedar limb from last winter so it's only had this summer to dry. I carve a lot of green coniferous wood. The pieces I've treated with the Liberon tend not to split as much as the oil is absorbed and once a good few layers are built up its sealed. The oil has uv protection in it which also helps it doesn't dry like a shell as varnish does it's quite flexible if that makes sense. I'm not an expert on it, I just find that seems to work best for me.

    Thanks Chris its Liberon decking oil 6 coats over 3 days would have liked to give it one more but ran out of time. I prefer Liberon as its a little thicker, you can brush it on, it absorbs into the wood well and multiple coats gives it glossy finish.

    Looks great well done. I think Si (wise wood) has given the best advice there with a slight angle on your cut. Keep them coming.

    Carved this for a work mates mum as a birthday gift for her husband to put in his farm shop. Don't think the fox will get this one.

    Next time just try any arb suppliers. F.r.Jones or Honeybrothers are just a couple I use. Most companies have websites or are at the end of the phone that would be happy to help and post out your items.

    Hi haven't carved much recently did a couple of quick carves here's a pic of my fox cub start to finish so far 2hrs. Going to add a little paint to give it a little more character hopefully.

    Hi guys my mums cousin lives in North Lincolnshire. she's due to have a couple of trees taken out and wants a couple of carvings.     I love carving with yew being a tree surgeon I have plenty of stock. However as mentioned above a turner would be interested. Most want bits for nothing but if it's clean and rot free I'd say the bigger lump would be worth 20 a foot. Also if any of the thinner pieces are 6ft+ and straight they can be made into archery bows but that would probably be hard to find someone local. Good luck anyway I'm sure someone will want it.

    Yes I like the paint. I've burnt the eyes a few times and unless you've got a nice controlled flame (which I haven't) I've found I've burnt some of the finer detail around the eye. Ps. Lovely carvings.

    Thank you I hope they like it added this plaque today as I haven't quite got the hang of letter carving yet. Detracts a little but adds a little more personality.

    Carved this yesterday for one of my wifes friends who is getting married Saturday. Going to treat it with a white Liberon decking oil.
