  1. Should be good for next weekend Kerry. I'll keep you posted by PM.
  2. Anyone up for a rec climb this weekend? Meet Saturday or Sunday at SP5 2DU, around 9.30am(negotiable). Weather looks fine but cold. In a massive woodland - plenty of variety to choose from. Limited car parking near the wood and around 1/2mi gear carrying. PM or reply to this thread. Rhob
  3. I really like this sculpture. Obviously the guy has too much time on his hands...but hows the variety of quartersawn stock available from a log....if he'd quartered it. Good vid though. Wonder how much that free-standing saw is?
  4. See what you mean Alec. There's definitely a wedge/lever mark on the cambium at the top left. Is the metal 'colouring' not transferred down the xylem then? If so, would it have a maximum range? Or does it just stain locally?
  5. That does look good! All thoughts of grinding out the hours to one day buy a woodland and you could rent one instead. Nice idea...still couldn't build your home in it though.
  6. Are those dark splotches evidence of metal in the tree? Seem to remember someone pointing that out before..
  7. Steve, Get a book. Either Tree climber's companion by Jeff Jepson or Tree climber's guide by Sharon Lilly. Both cover everything you'll need to know, but there's no substitute for training...
  8. Fine if you keep it dry once split. Weighs next to nothing too so best sell/buy by volume. Lovely clean timber though, splits very cleanly. I bought a lot this year and it's burning well after 3 months in that hot sunshine. Very fast drying!
  9. Thanks Tony. How do you investigate this? Take a ring sample and look for a squiffy middle? Tap it around the trunk to see if it's hollow? Great post Dalton trees by the way.
  10. Super keen - like it! You seem to get a lot of cherry Ed. From domestic jobs?
  11. Thanks guys, you answered a question I didn't even know I had! I'm looking to move from road tyres to a/ts on my Mazda. Currently running 265/75R15. Will make a note of that, see if can get entire wheels on ebay.
  12. All the way round the trunk David. The ripples you showed made me remember it. I think there's another in the wood that looks similar.
  13. Sounds like you may be able to explain this beech tree. Forest grown. Not rippled, but bobbled all the way up. I think on the limbs as well. Virus? Genetic?
  14. Late spring would be better with any stone fruits like your plum, as stated.
  15. The dust extractor's pointing at the operator...
  16. Looks like the Mizer is a little close to the wall. I'd pull it away a bit to get at the mountains of sawdust. I have put chocks beneath the log at one of the clamps in the past to get the first cut as level as possible up the log. Especially helpful with a bend. This may increase production a small amount. Otherwise, top job! Thanks for posting.
  17. That is a nice looking Larch! Fairly slow grown she looks. What's the wood going to be used for?
  18. Thanks a lot for posting Drew. Looks incredible - excellent artistic flair on all the shots. Reminds me of the positives of my own trip to southic countries. Lush trees!
  19. Opinel No.7. Great if you're climbing an apple tree
  20. I looked into these debarkers. They used to sell them on green shopping apparently. Anyway, found these 2 spuds here: Muller Debarking Spade | Woodsmith Experience | Woodsmith Experience. For specialist, handmade, woodworking tools. Bark Spud | Woodsmith Experience. For specialist, handmade, woodworking tools. The 2nd only has an 1 3/4" head which seems a little small. The 1st is 5". The one Ben Law uses is a lot longer and wider in the head from the looks of it. Still £59 for a long duck-billed chisel... You wouldn't have the debark the whole log gensetsteve, only where the bands travelling so hoik onto the bed then debark from the end opposite the powerhead. I always use a yard brush on any logs loaded onto the mill. It's not perfect but it gets the worst muck off.
  21. Moors Valley country park is a pretty good place to take the family. Poor soils so only Scots Pines of any great size but beautiful Oak beamed buildings, playpark, lake etc. Just passed Ringwood toward Bournemouth on the A35 then head right toward Three Legged Cross at the roundabout signed A338 (Bournemouth). Just up there, couple miles on the right. Enjoy...ya grockle!
  22. Well that last post went down like a lead balloon... Have found this climbing waiver in lawspeak (pdf attached). It seems pretty good, even though it's written for Kansas, USA. Re-written with a few changes and should be good to put into use, no? Let me know if you think it's sufficient/overkill. Essentially the 2nd guy in Timsbury near Romsey i've asked is that we sign a waiver and have our own personal accident and PL insurance. Shouldn't be a problem for most, except the beginners. He'd also be happy if we did some minor works to the trees we're climbing on - limbing over tracks or deadwooding etc. Anyone interested? PM or reply to this thread. Release Waiver-PDF.pdf
  23. Have some lovely dark ash I cut into today. A big windblow severed at the base by Inonotus hispidis. White rot in the main trunk but brought home a wee crotch as a sampler to see if it was worth milling the other 6m. Plenty of shakes -ring shake in some but nice colour - olive ash is it? Anyway, is the colour the result of the Inonotus? Should I buy & apply Wykabor/similar boron-based preserver to retain the hardness? Thanks
  24. Thanks all. My exhaust was holding it for me. 15 cm it had eaten! Lesson learnt indeed and real happy I didn't have to disengage the carb. Will try that 4.5mm starter rope next time, just to get enough in there. All back up & running now so cheers for the input on the thread (terrible pun, I know).
  25. Just a wee bump. Had a problem with 9mm climbing rope I was stopping the piston with in the 088. Just put a short section in and the piston sheared right through it. Can't see the sheared rope for love nor money so would filling the cylinder with fuel then pulling the starter cord do the trick or is there something else I can try? You say it definitely won't get through to the exhaust at that diameter? & what are the odds it'd burn it out if I started it up instead? That's a last resort, obviously. Thanks
