  1. Well I have to say I'm loving the 572 on a 20" bar. Only had 5 tanks or so through it so it's maybe not really settled in yet, but it knocks an unported 560 running 18" out of the park. It's not too heavy, extremely manoeuvrable in a tree and super smooth cutting. We'll see how it lasts but it certainly feels like a good, solid machine.
  2. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of climate scientist from all over the world are saying global warming is indeed real, and a real threat. I don't think any of us here are in a position to argue with that. What we can actually do about it, as consumers, is another matter. In order to bring things under control carbon taxes on individuals will just make us poorer. I'm not sure how they work but you have the right of it, they'd need to be on big business in order to encourage change. What it will probably take us a dramatic shift in how we live and lead our lives. So what we really need is a global change in behaviour. How does that come about? I've not a clue. But my guess is it won't happen until the current generation of people in power are out of the picture. edit: smart phone, turning global warming into clonal warning...?
  3. I have a cross Evo which I've never used. Having little dookets for everything just seems a hassle and it looks pants for rope. I have a black diamond touchstone I've been using for 6 years and used to fly with loads. Seriously tough. I chuck my 70m access line straight in the bottom, and can get my harness, 45m climbing line, 2 throw cubes and a helmet in on top of that with some room to spare. It's brilliant.
  4. I spoke too soon. Just got an invoice for £95 from the plumber. It's no an unfair price but the fact it took two and a half months for them to invoice me is a bit ridiculous...
  5. I have a 20" bar on mine and it's a ripper. It could run a larger bar but I'm basically setting it up as a dismantling saw so wanted it to cut like a demon. I think a longer/heavier bar would balance it a bit better, it's a touch machine side heavy with my setup. But it's also awesome.
  6. Sounds like a dodgy bam. A written quote is pretty basic, and getting you to order your own parts is just counter productive to doing a good job. It's like with tpo applications, yes the customer could do it, but I'd rather do it myself so that I know the wording is correct. I had a plumber come check my boiler in December as it wasn't working at all. He said it might be sensor, so he ordered that in and fitted it the following week. Works fine now. He never invoiced me at all. I tried chasing him but he never returned my calls. Bloody plumbers...
  7. Crap. I've been completely wrong. My apologies everyone I've so confidently told was wrong... I'm surprised though, I've seen construction workers wearing kask and petzl lids which clearly aren't actually up to spec. The side protection thing is still nonsense though, it's tested as an impact 30 degrees off vertical. Hardly the side...
  8. Yeah, but the Protos meets the same standards as any other climbing helmet in arb. Climbing helmets are totally fine to use on the ground, ground helmets aren't ok up a tree. The only difference in forestry and arb Protos models is the chinstrap.
  9. Yeah, that is wrong... If anything the Protos is less capable as it's ear defenders aren't up to chipper spec. All readily available climbing helmets for arb purposes, so kask, vertex, alveo etc are rated and appropriate for ground work. I'm not sure where the idea comes from that they aren't but it's nonsense.
  10. Yeah £1m for that box, no wonder he's got a sour face.
  11. Climbing helmets are principally rated for top impacts too. UIAA certification, which applies only to climbing helmets, actually requires greater impact absorption for top impacts than the en 12492 or whatever it is. Side protection is a myth in most helmets imo. I'm not sure how the ce certs for ground helmets Vs climbing helmets differ, but I'd guess it's mostly in the chin strap and adjustment? Ie how well it stays on your head. If the climbing helmet can take ear defenders then it's probably safe I'd say.
  12. As said the choke switch doesn't automatically go from full to 1/2 choke. It should jump from 1/2 to on when you blip the throttle though. I'll try and get round to taking a look at mine later and posting a picture of what all those bits should look like.
  13. I had the same issues with my 560. After a few years of hating the thing I took it to my dealer expecting it to go to scrap or cost me a packet. They did a load of software updates, cleaned the carb, replaced filters etc. It runs better than new now and cost me about £100. Totally different saw I know but sometimes these things surprise you...
  14. So I picked up a 572 today. Haven't put it to work yet but first impressions: little monster. I was just looking on the husky site and comparing more of the numbers to the 372 though... And while the power and torque are significantly greater on the 5, the 3 has better figures for fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. I was under the impression that companies were going to great lengths to keep emissions down while keeping saws powerful, which required all this electronic gadgetry. I feel like you could get the same out of a 372 if you said to hell with emissions laws, let's make her rip... And you could work on it yourself if need be. Perhaps I'm totally wrong though. Anyway, got a big partially failed sycamore to dismantle next week and looking forward to getting it out.
  15. Spiderjacks have the adjustable wooden block. But regardless of how you set that up the cam will still stop you, provided you have the right cam in. Closest I could think of.
  16. How about those wee flexible grabbers you get for picking screws out of engine bays and the likes? Our would they not fit in/scratch everything up too much?
  17. That was my thought, it's a safe bet basically. Some of the feedback on the 572 is quite convincing though...
  18. Hey guys, just wanting feedback from anyone who's been using the 572. How are you finding it? I'm torn between getting that or one of the last 372's. I remember being torn between the ms200 and 201 back in '12. Going with the trusty old 200 was the best kit decision I've ever made. 372 isn't quite as big a performer on paper, but you know it's gonna work, and keep working. I'm going to run a 20" bar on whichever one I get.
  19. Surely there are other devices which are adjustable? Seems a bit weak to deny it for that reason...
  20. To be fair I was thinking main climbing line hitch. For things like lanyard, throwing hook, spider leg balancer etc. you aren't using them as you might a main climbing line, bombing out of trees and the likes. Probably be alright for that I'd say... I was remembering someone I met who bought a dynamic climbing rope super cheap to chop up and use for hitch cord. He ended up changing prussiks so often though that he got sick of it, started buying regular hitch cord and never finished the dynamic rope...
  21. That's $2 a foot though, so after postage, taxes etc you're as well just paying £6 a meter to get it from the UK. Assuming the op is in the UK...
  22. Yeah, you might just find yourself getting sick of having to change hitch cord all the time... As said armour pruss, HRC, Ocean polyester, bail out and a load of other cords have really good heat resistance and last ages. I've tried em all and settled on HRC. Well worth the money.
  23. Yeah I watched a review of the ld2 and it actually looks really good. The clamp can obviously be optional, and the back plate being aluminium makes it look a lot less hefty all of a sudden! The fair leads look a bit funny though, can you use it with both of them on?
  24. Yeah the hobbs is definitely a decent device too. As you say simple, and so less to go wrong. Great for less experienced groundies if you're contracting and the likes, or if you're sending the boys off to do a job. If I'm getting a winch I kinda want to go all out and get something that can really winch though, y'know? The ropeclamp bit on the ld1/2 does look pretty handy... I thought the ld2 looked like a pretty huge unit, but then I've only seen them online. How does that compare to the grcs?
  25. After a few too many I phoned someone from under water with my old Sony. I don't remember the call quality being great but that was probably just been the gin...
