  5. Erm, I'm running 36" on my 385 and it pulls like a train! All in, you want a 80+cc saw for big bars, running an 070/090 will kill your back and unless you know how to use them, they would be pointless, the 050/051/075/075 once again is a big stihl torque saw, that in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to work it will just be a big, slow lump, as will the big old huskies. The minimum I would recommend is an 056/064/066/084/088 and newer counterparts or the husky 281/288/385/390/395/3120. These all have a modern rpm range, chainbrake as standard and fairly common to obtain Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  6. The only way to learn, really, is to do! When I first joined this forum I had no knowledge past the basic maintenance taught on cs30, but I read through the bench thread, which was then on less than a thousand posts, and I practiced repairs on my own saws and machines, I then got given or bought a few knackered machines to work on, including the stihl contra that I converted to an 090. Finally I worked on a seized 357, which cost me pocket money, I thought bugger it, and carefully read through spuds posts on porting and tried to mimic what he had done, which worked and produced a saw I was proud of! You acquire tools as you need them and learn through what you do, others experiences and the workshop manuals. If I can go from an average saw monkey to people asking me advice, anyone can, I have no qualifications, no training as such, just the will to learn and an interest in my equipment.   12. Everybody I work with now wants a 150! Only problems I've found so far is the bar clogs really easily, and crap gets into the handle, which causes the off switch to malfunction. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  13. They clog up all the time, the best way to clear them is drag the sprocket (no chain) across a block of wood. You shouldn't need to replace the bar unless there is a fair bit of side play with the sprocket Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

    I'm confused! Has the grey metal tube that connects to the flywheel broke? Or has the little metal ring inside been stripped? The ring is an easy fix and still readily available! I have the old type on my 090, and it's much easier to adjust the points. If you are referring to the metal ring btw, you need to order it from the 090 parts listing Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  20. 346 kicked over after a few pulls today, sounds like it's running nice, stamp on it makes it a 2002 saw, needs a chainbrake band and chain catcher. 254 is not heated as some muppet has cut the wires!? Obviously had to replace the front handle and decided to cut all the wires to save time grrr! Haven't ran it yet as it has no fuel cap, but compression is there! 371 has a fuel cap and compression, but not much other plastic bits, so I need starter side, top cover, air filter, dead man handle, clutch cover, and the bits that hold the clutch on Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

Anyway, the FM starter is quite easily jammed if re-assembled wrongly, it should be the rewind spring attatched to the rope guide, then a thin metal washer, plastic washer, rotor friction arms, plastic washer, metal washer, spring, big metal washer and an e-clip, if anything is missing, it doesn't work Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
