  7. Cheers Martyn, Yeah I'm new to this site but there is loads of good info and helpful people on here. My current background is Therapeutic horticulture - working with learning difficulties and mental health volunteers for a community project. Prior to that I did 15 years in the fire & rescue service as a rope & technical rescue instructor, working in IRATA and specialist rope rescue tecniques. Got a CS30 and spent 20 years or so using saws but have done a fair bit of domestic work over the last 2 or 3 years involving climbing and using silkys only. Have been hedgelaying for 12 years too but it's seasonal so me and my partner are thinking of starting up a more 'commercial' side with the trees as well. Thinking that it would be very beneficial to see how arb work is done properly tho, there seems to be so many excellent techniques and climbing kit about as well as a lot of experienced people in the industry. Would like to go for the 38 and 39 eventually, the rec climb sounds like a good way to find out a bit more so I can make a decision about wether to take them or not. Sorry, forgot to say I'm near Symonds Yat in the Forest of Dean just by Monmouth. Thanks for the welcome, All the best, Jamie
  8. That sounds like a damn good idea Martyn, I for one would be very interested. Will keep in touch about it, cheers, Jamie

  14. Hi Buster, You found a good site to get advice mate, there are a lot of experienced and helpful people on here always more than willing to help. I'm in Gloucestershire but there seem to be loads of guys based near Exeter so tou should do ok. All the best, cheers, Jamie
  15. Hi Fen, Good to hear you're busy. I'm in the Forest of Dean too, how would you fancy combining an order for some stakes and binders with me to see if we can get a better price? Trying to order some at the minute, don't seem to bee many about. Cheers, Jamie

    hello

Thanks for the Kelly input, not used one ert so thats much appreciated. Managed to get stakes for 35p each and binders down to 20p each - both in bundles of 20, didn't have any coppice available at the time so it was a lifesaver. Glad you're getting busy too, word of mouth is definitely the best way cos people have seen your work and recommend it. Seems like most hedgelayers get their work that way. The Devon style does look good, will hopefully get a chance to do it one day.
  17. Agree with combined tree services, excellent description of the handle
  18. Hi Trailsaw, Not sure if this helps but we used tirfors quite a bit in the fire service and the handles were two piece (telescopic/sliding) tubular aluminium that were 18 inches at the shortest and extending to 3 feet max

    hello

Hi again Hedgesparrow, Yeah the stove is essential for hedgelaying - nothing quite like it when it's cold! I've bought stakes and binders in for the last two seasons as it saves days and days worth of time, haggled a price for both and ended up doing more paid days instead of having to spend time and effort cutting and gathering them, well worthwhile. Was thinking of trying a Kelly Kettle, they look good and have a cooking set up too. Will report back on the results of using one. As the other guys said though, once you get known for hedgelaying it can get quite busy. All the best with your business mate, Chhers
  20. Sorry, 17,000 kms:blushing:
  21. Hi WoodEd, The 400 is a 1987 Honda CBR400RH with 17,000:001 kilometres on it and I'm looking for around £1200 ono. It's got mot and will be taxed for 12 months but it's on SORN at the minute, thanks for asking. Cheers, Jamie
  22. Here's my bike, a good all rounder - effortless to ride, comfortable and superb two up as my other half loves bein on the back, happy days. P.S. The 400 is for sale

    hello

Hi Hedgesparrow, welcome to an excellent site. I'm hedgelaying too, based in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire and have been fortunate to have a fair bit of grant work (via Natural England). The South of England style is quite popular here too, similar to our local style - Welsh Borders. The CS30/31 opens up lots more opportunities for work and insurance so is well worth having. As regards prices, most hedgelayers in this area are charging around £10 per metre as a starting point and are all doing ok, hope this helps mate. All the best and have a good Christmas, cheers, JamieP
