  1. Good luck with that! Take 2/3rd of a day getting costs and number crunching, I would start with along the lines of . . . Material costs, make a list of very thing you need and work from there. This shouldn't change to much and once worked out give you a point to go from. Ring round a few local places and ask for delivery prices to go with it, add this into it all as well or a bit less if you plan on picking it up your self. Make sure you have enough money in the bank to cover this as you may be waiting a bit for payment. Material, hire, plants, consumable ect Waste disposal, if you cant move it your self or have a use for it then speak to skip companies, maybe grab lorries if there is a fair bit . . . Its a massive time saver and a weight of your mind, no pun intended. Your time it will take to complete the job x your day/ hour rate. Add 20-30% on to make you justify that day you have had behind the desk, contingency and if you get it right will be your profit . . . This kind of thing deserves more of a reward than your bread n butter so ask for it . . Try and work some money in the for some new gear to make it faster. Think through every process on the job and make sure you haven't missed some thing, you may end up doing this a few times before you click send. I take ages looking over big quotes. If its to much for your then try not to loose the work, if you get on well if some you have worked for in the past then ask them for help?
  2. I think single cab 110 would hold a fair amount. By the time you get chipper or trailer on the back you will be getting there . . .
  3. Yes, its an option as well. I dont think there are as many about and think there will still be the same issues. Yes, I see lots of them do have roof storage, suppose that tells you some thing!
  4. Cheers for that. I think i sent them an email a week ago but havnt had a reply yet, will have to give them a call when i have a moment spare in the day. Will take a look into foley . . .
  5. Yeh, dont mind if i get some one to do the conversion or I get some thing with it done. Got my eyes on a nice 110 single cab at a landrover specalist 10mins away that would need converting. Yeh, supose nothing is safe if it can be seen, for the times when you pop in a shop or into a house would in cab storage feel more secure or can you make up a secure out of cab storage to avoid some one gra bing gear!?
  6. I need to get my self a specific tree work 4x4 at some point. Recently got the landy bug and took a 110 out for a test drive. We have an L200 on the farm that I have used from time to time over the last few years. thinking about a 110 Tipper. My budget is 9-14k and I am not set on the landy! I would ideally have the twin cab for the extra secure storage and seats but don't know if that leaves enough usable space for the chip box. Any thoughts on this? I think that you end up with a depth of about 140cm but I am not sure on that . . . Single cab looks great with plenty of space in the back for a tipper and tool storage box behind the cab. I am just not sure how I feel about the cab being so small. I need the option off 3 seats and would like to be able to at least fit a tool kit and first aid kit in the cab as I wouldn't want to leave any gear in the tool area for an extended time. Thank you
  7. Good work! Hopefully getting some DART training this year so I can get involved in the future.
  8. Not the fire sledge but I did this on a few fire sites on a 630m hedge laying job at the start on the season. I think it worked a treat! I didnt remove the ash but i think its going to be able to deal with it. Time will tell.

    Mole traps

Use the tunnel ones for the runs that you find by pocking a stick down between the mole hills, I think they are called duffus traps, they work a treat! And then the scissor ones for the runs where they just push the soil up that you can see from the surface. With the runs that are visible from the surface if you only have a few traps you can just push a few of them down in some parts with your foot, if they push them back up then those are active. I never used those Talpex ones but they look good. Also with new traps leave them out side in the dirt for a few days before you use them, just to get the new smell out of them. I also used to rub a previously caught mole on traps when you are setting them, used to think it made them think there was another mole in the run. Dont know if that really works but I used to catch up to 40 moles a year on the farm so cant have been doing to much wrong.

    Pruning cuts?

I have done 650m of hedging so far this year. Dorset/devon style. I do it all with a saw and tend to be pretty rough with it and just skim the saw up it. I had the same thoughts as kev.
  11. For the last two years I have been climbing and collecting seeds for a company called forest start. So far we have done Coastal Redwoods, Giant Redwoods, Douglas fir, Aspen and Japanese Cedar seeds. Just for 2-4 weeks a year. They do a huge range of seeds but expect they may only sell in bulk to nurseries who germinate and sell of for forestry re-planting. Welcome to Forestart - The premier suppliers of quality tree, shrub and wildflower seed in Britain
  12. Yes! Cant be many pink Jo Beau 500 in the Uk!
  13. Yep, she is a little beut! I have chipped a fair pile with it already. Going to order up a set of spare blades soon. I will pm you how much I paid for it. Re-spay color . . . pink?
  14. Another member! I picked up my first chipper at the end of last week. Its a 2nd hand Jo Beau 500 that I got of a Arbtalk member who got back to me after a wanted post. I have already used it a few times and I am very happy with it, great bit of kit! It is about 6 years old and it looks that way, its also had a re-paint in green. Its got most of the controls missing of the "dash" section and generally could to with a bit of tlc to get it back how it once was. My plan is to earn some $ with it for a few months and then strip it down, sand blast and re-paint and giving every thing a good service as I go and replacing any missing bit n bobs.
  15. The 300/400 would be what I want to look at.
  16. Yes, shame I couldn't make it, lovely day for it! I think you are going to be at futurescape on the 17th at sandown park? Greenmech and the haecksler importers are going to be there so I am very keen to get to that one.
  17. Think I am just going to give each of the dealers a call and have a chat. I wanted to go to Saltex, a land management show at the NEC on the 4th or 5th and have a look at some stuff there but not sure if I am going to make it. I think there isn't going to be much in it at the end, they do seem pretty similar.
  18. About to go down this route my self. First chipper! I have been struggling for a long time with out so time to make the move. New or ex demo and I would like to get some thing in the next two weeks. Looking at either of the following, appreciate that its unlikely for any one to have tried all 3 but would any of these be a bad move . . . . Haecksler mini chipper, the less expensive of the 3 Greenmech cs100 Jo Beua 300/400 Based in Dorset. Need to think about how available parts are going to be. Will also need a trailer, either one designed for the machine small that it will fit in.
  19. Very nice, that looks spot on for what I need!
  20. Thanks for the reply's every one. Looks like I need to have a look about the farm and see what I can put together! I will pop some pics up if I can get it to work out.
  21. Hell all, Not sure if this is the correct place to post but maybe some one has some ideas After laying nearly 200m of hedge this winter I still have the brash laid out with the plan to burn up with a tractor and grab in two fire sites on tin sheets, removing ash afterwards. Its for a conservation charity and they don't want any burning done after the end of March. The ground has been pretty saturated since we finished the laying and doesn't look like its going to get significantly better before the seasons out to get a tractor in there. Tracked chipper for a few days was an option with chipping it back into the hedge but natural England dont like that. Chipping into piles and removing with machine when its dry is an option but that's chipper hire, lots of labor and coming back with tractor and trailer. I am thinking about a "fire sledge" that can be moved along the hedge burning as we go. Some thing that can be shifted with an atv. I have heard of this being done before and sure I could work some thing out but has any one done this before and have any ideas? Pictures? Or any other ideas? Thanks for reading, Ian
  22. Hi Mart, can you show me how to do it as well?
  23. Yes, those guys are both good. They know the score.
