  1. That's a bloody big tree! Would love to have a go on that. How big can those eucalyptus get? Here are a few clips that we made in Honduras this year - Me and waldo only went along for filming this for one day but it was a project that Sven and nick were working on the whole time we were there. Sven is looking for some one to help him next year . . . . 2. Hi Ben, Chile was with Waldo and another guy called Zak who was doing the camera work. How do you know Waldo then? I think Grant went over there on a seed collecting trip a few years before us so we got a few locations for nice trees from him. Wicked trees and wicked photos. There is a facebook page called "ancient giants" with some pretty sweet pictures or a website more info and I think there is a little trailer for the film up there now. I think it costs about 700 quid in the end. It is a lot of money but its good fun and you learn a few pretty things. Waldo is actually one of the guys who runs them. You also learn a bit about rigging witch I found very interesting.
  3. I did a course called a BCAP - basic canopy access proficiency. It is run by a company called Canopy access Ltd (CAL). It specializes in the technique in climbing big tropical trees. Pretty cool course, it has taken me to Chile for 6 weeks and then shortly after to Honduras for 2 months where I was actually working as an assistant instructor for CAL on a operation wallacea site. This is a link to there page about training Canopy Access Limited UK | safety and filming services for forest canopy | training courses If you wanted to do some trips with people they would love the fact you have a arb background but expect a BCAP (or some thing similar!?) would be a must for most of them.
  4. The newer Petzel vertex is great. I have the older version and it doesn't fit so well.
  5. Very interesting thread. I am just going through this process my self. Thank you.
  6. Canopy Land Use - Land Management Consultancy My uncle is part of that. I am sure they can find some wood! Contacts all over Dorset.
  7. Yes! That looks great! But yes, it all comes down to money
  8. Think you link is a little dodgy. Is this what you were trying to post? [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pilcLXpdJK0]Chainsaw Leg Protection - YouTube[/ame]
  9. Hi agg221 or Rob, what is this precision chain grinder? Pretty spot on with my sharpening and enjoy it over a 13" bar but I think that over a longer bar its going to start getting tedious.
  10. I went for a Husky 372xp in the end. Some thing that is a good step up from the 346 so I can use it for other jobs. Found the book online - Chainsaw Lumber Making And six months! Wow, better get cutting!
  11. Cheers, I have just got the saw but now cant afford the mill for now. Some time over the next few weeks I will be putting an order in all being well. Sound advice, I expect I will go for the 36" the next one up is 48" and that sounds excessive for my needs and would be to much for my saw. Also, mini mill, I can see that being some thing that I am going to want in the future but for now I just don't have the money. Also is there any interesting reading material out there for chainsaw saw mills? Cutting, storing, seasoning time and different wood properties? I would know enough to get my self going but I am sure there is a lot to learn.
  12. Thanks, I nearly got a iphone 6 instead. Will sign up now, hope to make a order next week but I will email you a few questions about bar and chain before I do. Also think I will go for the 30" mill. Just that little extra.
  13. Thanks Andy, my first post, sorry about my spelling! I cant seem to edit. agg221, thank you, very informative. It does make sense to use a bigger saw and I am pretty sure I could justify spending the money on one. More of a Husky fan, maybe a 372xp(70.7cc) would be a good saw to go for. Not meant for a 30" bar but if 6"+ of it isn't being used I would assume its fine. Pretty similar to the 044 I think. I think I have come across one of Rob D's videos and had a look on the site. I would get one from there over ebay. 14. So I do a fair bit of tree work so I am coming across plenty of nice pieces of wood that will often just get cut up for fire wood. I am looking into converting a 40ft shipping container into acomidataion/storage. I will insulate and line the whole inside with ply wood but I like the idea of making work tops, shelves, windows, doors and frames from wood that is a little more special, that wouldn't get painted. I first spotted these mills and love the look of how strait forward they and and also seem reasonably cost. (Alaskan 24" saw mill) ALASKAN PORTABLE 24" CHAINSAW SAW MILL LOGGING SAWMILL | eBay The currently only have two husqvarna 346xp saws, very nice saws for when doing tree work but I am unsure how suited they would be for milling. Also, this mill is 24", would that be adjustable as I wouldn't want to put a bar that big on a 346? I don't have any experiences with milling so I am putting this idea out for constructive criticism. Thanks Ian
  15. Yes, whats your budget? And what type of work are you planning on doing with it? For a decent professional all round saw I would recommend a Husqvarna 346xp. I only have a 13" bar on mine as well so super light with lots of power and there are few things that you cant do on a day to day basis with a 13"bar. Or if you wanted some thing this a little more power there is the next one up, a 357xp or its newer model the 560xp. Just depends on your budget. HUSQVARNA 346 XP® - Professional chainsaws

    Rig

Not sure what you mean by "east side of the pound" but I have and use a Rig. Good bit of kit, much smaller than a i.d, it is a little more jumpy I have noticed. Is there any thing in particular you were wondering about?
