  1. googling black berries i've come up with either osmanthus or sarcococca or a really big privet? if it's coming down i'd be interested in the stem.
  2. what sizes do you have?
  3. i remember that thread and know it can be a pain to dry but it's such a good looking timber i think its worth it. somewhat coincidentally i helped paul sweetman (arborist) take one down at his uncle's yesterday and have my pick of lumps to use as balls but it's very wet and i could do with some dry at present. i'm going to turn a wet ball and see how badly it splits. i got the base of the tree split in half and it's shown up some fantastic ripple.
  4. don't you dare log such a nice tree. a few dimensions might help find a miller?
  5. would that be these? .
  6. the only google results i got for ""kieron" were people... Keruing | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwoods)
  7. what you asking for a m3?
  8. its not called kieron. the wood is keruing, (dipterocarpus spp) which comes from the philippines and malaysian area of the world and will burn as hot as any of the stuff woodwasp has. ekki may just beat it??? not sure.
  9. big j, i don't know how you can be so light at 6'8". you look stronger than i do in that photo and would have thought you would be nearer 20st.
  10. i had no idea this thread would be so popular. we'll have to get some pictures up here next whilst we're all on the scales.
  11. that lot i got from you has now been split in half and the colouring from leaving it outside in the rain looks really nice. i'll have to turn a bowl and get a snap.
  12. if i lifted weights like you i reckon i could also tip the 20st mark but i've never lifted any weights.
  13. it stands for Body Mass Index and is very inaccurate as someone like me shows. well built people like rowers and rugby players are technically obese if you were to go by it. as tree surgeons, firewood merchants and anyone in the wood industry are generally quite strong i was curious to see if i was a bit big for someone my height or if it was normal to have a heavy weight for my height.
  14. seem's that i am a bit on the big side for 6'3" then. i'm 32 now and am wondering when the muscle will start getting a bit more wobbly...
  15. if it comes down jon, i'll be very interested.
  16. possibly a bit of a rude question but most of us blokes aren't too bothered are we? according to a BMI calculator my BMI is 29.7 which means i'm bordering on obese when i still look like i do in my avatar photo. i am 6'3" and well built weighing in at 17st before i've eaten my tea. i'm curious to know how much do climbers and other strong people on here weigh making them high on the BMI but perfectly healthy? include your height with your weight.
  17. hopefully these links and picks explain it. The Wonderful World Of Long Alley Skittles: What The Hell Is Long Alley Skittles? Shove it, Chuck it, Toss it...: Long Alley Skittles
  18. not hard enough i'm afraid. please don't put it on the fire pile. it's too pretty, give it to a local turner.
  19. cherry splits relatively cleanly and is likely to split on impact with the concrete lanes so thanks but that won't be any use. the wood needs to be interlocked so i'm looking at things like apple, elm, whitebeam, hornbeam or oak. i turned a bit of eucalyptus last night and it's perfect for the job. would love to find some dry bits of that.
  20. here is the ball i turned yesterday. as i was turning the union down the branch pretty much disappeared so i'll take straight euc as it's rock hard. there is a bit of spalting i the sap which is too soft really but this one is a test. .
  21. sounds good mate. just how much is one or two bits?
  22. semi dry will do john.
  23. hi all, after my failed request for knoty wood i did find something in the garden which was an old eucalyptus branch from my sister's tree that had been sat around for years. i turned it into a ball at the branch union and realised that this timber would be ideal. has anyone got any eucalyptus branches or trunks that is a few years dry with a heart wood 6" and wider. please get in touch if you have. i'll post an example of the turning when i find my camera.
  24. has nobody got anything at all???
  25. 6" would be ok. i'm happy to pay for a length. how long are they?
