  1. John, you may be in luck as i have something along the lines of what you want for sale. it's one of these if you are interested. came out of the factory in 1957 and had just been refurbished when i bought it. there is plenty of info on it here. located at SL1 8AL. PM me if you are interested in it.
  2. Cryptomeria japonica.
  3. i'd say 200-300 quid a slab wet, £400 dry s they are a good size. any spare timber for some bowl turning or wood samples??? the scab boards would be OK.
  4. yep, 100% robinia pseudoacacia. one of my favorite timbers.
  5. been going around facebook for 6 months that one.
  6. iroko is available from any timber dealer, there must be one in his part of the world....
  7. i've messaged you.
  8. i'm no luthier but have lots of timbers suitable for making both electric and acoustic guitars from if anyone is interested.
  9. let's hope the PH looks like this.
  10. sounds like you should be able to recover some good timber from the PH if it's near 2' square. as a woodturner i think there is the possibility for some large turning squares to be sold from some of that lot. how many beams of purple heart are that size???
  11. TCT blades are recommended for milling the beams... the amount of crap like sand and silt that will be in the cracks will dull anything else in seconds. what section are the beams available??? green heart should not be worth alot as there are literally thousands of beams all over the UK. the PH will only be worth something if it has a good amount of colour but purpleheart can be a bland greyish or brown.
  12. the lower branches die and fall off over time as the tree gets older. the shape of the tree will look like this in years to come. it a natural process.
  13. i've changed my mind after reading the rest of the wikipedia page. this was what i had found... Amphimallon solstitiale - Wikipedia EN.WIKIPEDIA.ORG
  14. yes that's my finger. after looking at cockshafer beetle (genus Melolontha) wikipedia says it's not to be confused with the European chafer... (Amphimallon majale) this was what was on my finger...
  15. sorry about these being blurry but it was dusk.
  16. this one is a moth i presume but i've never seen one this colour before.
  17. agreed, i'm a Man U fan but credit where credit is due. i feel sorry for them actually that they can't celebrate properly. i hope there are no stupid scenes like the crowding on the beaches today all through the streets of liverpool...
  18. i use a simple 8" grinder and do everything freehand. it's the easiest way...
  19. it's only 8 miles or so but it's not easy chugging 115kg to and from work. i get the train between Burnham and windsor which cuts 5 miles out of it...
  20. not sure how often i'll be able to do any work as my bike was stolen before lockdown... i cycled to work...
  21. don't think so. a pic of the bark would help...
  22. well it's been quite a while since i've been able to do any work but i'm hoping to be able to get back to do some jobs this summer. i've turned 4 newel posts (no pictures) in late may which was 4 hours work for the joiner landlord i have and i've just done these two finials for a friend of his. i was just given a picture and told to make two like that so i drew up the design on paper to use as my rod and used some 6" diameter Opepe wood that i had at work. took 4 hours in total. they are to be painted and will go on top of some gateposts.
  23. looks ring porous which rules out cotoneaster. i don't recognise the timber myself. does anyone know the bark???
  24. i believe the Copford sawmill has the WM1000 so it may be worth contacting them direct to see if it's worth all that money... http://www.copfordsawmill.co.uk/
  25. 100% an oak species as you can see medullary rays but without close ups i can't tell which one.
