  1. My Insurer always says, inform me of any extreme work you're planning to do like railway work, powerlines etc. When I told them about the petrol forecourt job they said OK, no problem, go right ahead. They then added my extra details to my insurance current docs and emailed those amendments to me. Its reassuring to know you're still covered...
  2. Cheers for your input guys. Fore-warned and all that. I was just thinking it'll be hot enough going as it is with my sparking chainsaw...!
  3. Hi guys, I've been asked to do a big Leylandii takedown - 6x70 feet trees -alongside a busy petrol station and wondered if anyone had any tips or advice? Are there any special - high risk - regs? Any advice would be much appreciated. We're considering using a crane/MEWP to remove several branches growing over the forecourt canopy.
  4. Mid-life crisis?! I may be having a mid-life crisis switching to tree-surgery recently from bus-driving but I wish I'd done it twenty years ago! If you're the out-door type love trees/tree climbing, chainsaws and providing a much needed/appreciated service you'll be satisfied doing most anything connected with tree-surgery IMO. People have said to me that they are 10/10 happy with my work doing what they can't do! Job satisfaction indeed. You only live once - an old saying but so true! Do what you enjoy doing and you're halfway home already.
  5. Thanks for clearing that one up guys.
  6. Hi Guys, this one has probably already been answered, but here goes anyway. Does anyone know if tree-surgeons are entitled to use red diesel in chippers? It would be a great saving, as red diesel is 70p/litre - sounds too good to be true! A friend tipped me off and so wondered what the truth was??
  7. In France farmers put 4/10 cartridges in their wood piles! Sounds a tad extreme but....

  9. I heard that reinvesting as much profit as possible is the best way to keep it out of the Taxman's hands. So, big turnover but makes your business appear as though it is running at a loss! Does that sound right. I'm a Sole-Trader who's only recently started trading and would be interested to hear from anyone if this is how they run their company.

  11. Thanks guys. Is this a sign of tree decline/decay and death then?

  15. Hi guys, I know almost nothing about fungus and was wondering if I could have the benefit of your extensive collective knowledge? The tree in question is a pollarded Ash. Also, I was wondering if anyone knows whether a Manna Ash should have some reddish/brown leaves at this time of year. A client has asked about the leaves on the Southwest side of his Manna Ash tree going red. Unfortunately I forgot to take my camera but will upload a pic as soon as the job starts.

  17. Hi Nick. Get yourself a copy of: 'Work Your Way Around the World' by Susan Griffith, which can be bought on Ebay for 99pence and its bang up to date with all those useful telephone numbers you'll need. It will tell you everything you need to know about working in many different foreign countries (especially Western one) including tax, visas, jabs etc. It will also tell you about travel to and around those countries. Best of all it will supply you with a range of travellers' tales giving you the benefit of their experience and wisdom, sometimes hard won! Enjoy yourself!
