  1. When does a hedge become a tree or a tree a hedge? I only ask because the other day I agreed to dismantle/remove a large multi-stemed Lelandii for a customer. My regular climber didn't get back to me in time for a quote I did and (with only a small time window between jobs) I ended up doing the removal/felling and topping with the help of the customer who acted as a groundie of sorts (he's actually a family friend). The real question (at last!) is, at what point do you other tree surgeons feel the need for a second climber for aeriel rescue? Isn't Lellandi just a hybridised hedging plant and not (necessarily) so much a tree? Who wants to turn this kind of 'bread and butter' work down because your oppo is unavailable that day? What's the Public-Liabilty feel about this anyone??
  2. I had Japanese Knotweed in my garden, used Roundup successfully over two seasons and the ground wasn't contaminated for two years like the glyphosphate leaves it. No injecting just thorough spraying the top and bottom of leaves. You can buy the stuff in concentrate from any good farmers' supply.
  3. Forgive the ignorance guys - I'm a newbie - but what were you all talking acronyms about? I know the CSs, MEWP, and a few others. But what are: CSCS cards; Rolo 1-day(Chocies); PTS; Unit 2 Signing and Lighting; CITB Site Supervisor; CPCS tickets; IPAF 1B tickets??!!
  4. The Poplar topping job is just outside a small village near Saintes(which is just below La Rochelle). Thanks for all the advice guys. I didn't realise that topping was such a live topic!
  5. I've already suggested the pollarding option but it fell on deaf ears. They still want major seclusion around their pool! Isn't proper pollarding only used as a repeat on trees grown for pollarding?
  6. I don't think they've ever been topped before but I won't know until I get there. Tying-in for a strong anchor point is going to be tricky. I think I'll use a cambium saver chokered to the main stem to be sure of secure positioning using my top-handled saw.
  7. Hi guys. I know how controversial topping is but what are the real dangers of reducing 50ft poplars by about a third? I've heard they're prone to barberchairing. I've been asked to top 5 tall poplars in France. How likely is this scenario? What is the best way to prevent this? Any help would be appreciated.
  8. Any idea about the when? and where? these jobs will arise. I've got NPTC cs 30, 31, 32, 38, 39, 40, a chipper ticket, MEWP ticket and Emergency First Aid. Will 07840761566
  9. Where are you based Old Man. Maybe I can help as I'm looking for work?
  10. Hi folks I've recently passed CS39/40 (March 2012). I've done a few jobs since then - can provide references. I'm looking for work in the Devon/Cornwall area.
