Hoping "Just Me" will be along with a (excuse the pun) view on this.... I've been looking at reversing cameras - go easy on the derisory comments, yes it is for a girl (although also useful for picking up the tow hitch.) First thought, was simply a reversing camera. Then I thought, what about a twin cam rear view and reversing camera - useful for box van with no rear windows / rearview mirror. Found a potentially suitable item: https://www.parkingcameras.com/store/product.php?productid=415&cat=19&page=1 Then I wondered about the legality of having a video stream of the rearview whilst driving - would it be classed as a distraction and liable for prosecution? How is it any different to a rearview mirror with moving images?? The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 says: Television sets 109.—(1) No person shall drive, or cause or permit to be driven, a motor vehicle on a road, if the driver is in such a position as to be able to see, whether directly or by reflection, a television receiving apparatus or other cinematographic apparatus used to display anything other than information— (a) about the state of the vehicle or its equipment; (b) about the location of the vehicle and the road on which it is located; © to assist the driver to see the road adjacent to the vehicle; or (d) to assist the driver to reach his destination. (2) In this regulation “television receiving apparatus” means any cathode ray tube carried on a vehicle and on which there can be displayed an image derived from a television broadcast, a recording or a camera or computer. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/109/made So, it would appear that it should be acceptable to have a rear view camera with live feed whilst driving. Then, after the recent crash & dash experience, I got to thinking about a camera system with reverse and rear view live feed + record whilst driving + record whilst engine turned off in a dash cam sort of fashion. Anyone tried anything similar or have any advice / pointers??

Bang some pegs into it and build a house around it? Sorry, not very helpful, I'll get my coat! -
You're mixing up timescales and previous employment now just to muddy the waters... 1k/week, 20 years ago and just getting by.... you're baiting me now!

Maybe Mr Eggs.... It could be that the "thinking" businesses either don't want to or don't have time to discuss in the public domain and the "hand-to-mouth" happy to get by brigade haven't considered it. Who knows, just crossed my mind whilst watching the news last night what with the forecasts of inflationary rises due in the NY and I was thinking back to some previous posts where people have said they were earning more 10 /15 / 20 years ago. What's your set up (if you don't mind saying.) Just thinking about how my costs might increase next year - the fuel / oil is an easy starter for 10. Not convinced the 'consumables' usage will make any noticeable dent. Not sure what else might have any significant effect. I'm not due any major servicing of vehicles, not (at the moment) planning on any big buy items. Totally agree your point about not over competing on price, I'd rather leave it than be driven into the ground for the sake of getting the job. That said, I have just been bitten by having underestimated the time / complexity of a job, first one for a good while though so not too stressed, it'll act as a wake-up call! Mate was telling me about one of the bigger players doing LA contract work who had a £7/tree rate for street tree re-pollarding. I had a think about it while I was in Plymouth yesterday. They'd have to be doing 100 trees a day just to cover costs? Seems crazy!!

Anyone considering a round of price rises (domestic arb) in line with forecast inflation rises in 2017 or will it be a continuation of competing hard for jobs on price and maintaining the oft rued under valuation of the industry sector?

I get it fella, I feel the same, it's frustrating! If time was no issue I'd mill more of the stuff I cut. After time to actually do it, the thing I couldn't do is put up with the hassles that go with trying to sell stuff to people. It's more trouble than it's worth. -

A bit harsh maybe? The reality, the harsh reality, is that you might get lucky and find someone that would take it from site FOC which gives you the cost saving of removing it. They will pick up the costs you save in their time & effort. What would you say the time, effort labour and disposal costs TO YOU would be? Take that cost as a saving and give the timber to someone that would be willing to take it. It's a crying shame, but the number of people willing / able to take it from you is probably so small that there's very little chance of finding one. If it saves you time and effort, give it to someone if they are willing to take it. There's always ebay I guess..... -
That all makes good sense! Just spent 10 minutes looking through the AV stock list online....

Hitting a parked vehicle and not leaving details
kevinjohnsonmbe replied to kevinjohnsonmbe's topic in Business Management
Form filling, witness details etc... Perhaps it's karma since I was in a similar situation in Polperro a couple of months ago when I witnessed a selfish, inconsiderate and unsafe driver hit a parked car then drive off. I left a note for the car owner (that's an old gag Mr B!) giving my phone number as witness and the offending vehicle details. The car owner was very grateful and the police were in touch to get a statement for prosecution. Hopefully this one will go the same way. You have to fill the forms in then they get sent to the collisions unit for further action. It has to be in the public interest to go to prosecution. Desk officer said because she stopped, got out and looked at it, then drove off it's more likely they will prosecute. Another point I'll try and focus on in future is to find out where the camera coverage is in supermarkets etc, and always park in coverage area. May seem obvious but I'll pay attention from now on. -
It looks like it's been spewing out hyd oil? Maybe not a huge prob if the backhoe is taken off anyway? Price appears to be very slowly creeping up... Pity it's so far away, it'd be worth a look otherwise.

😆 sharp!! No, I'll be using a different formula for that calc Bob! Did you see that back hoe mog thread -
In a thread which is likely to be populated by dedicated and aspiring kiln users?? Where the logic, even amongst those die hards, has clearly demonstrated the lack of commercial viability unless suckling at the teat of RHI??? Can't see it being very receptive audience..... But we're here, watching and shaking our collective heads in moral indignation! (For the hard of thinking, and there must be a high proportion amongst the kiln fraternity, this is light-hearted, not serious!)

I'll find out from the rozzers tomorrow! I hope so!! -
That's a rare old video! Bidspotter seems to have gone down hill over recent years with crazy reserve prices. If that stays around the current £ level it'd be worth it just for giggles (unless the Blue Baron buys them all :big grin:)

It feels a bit Karmic! A month ago I saw someone do something very similar so I put a note on the injured party's vehicle. They phoned and said thank you and let us know when you're next in town for a beer! What goes around..... -
Hitting a parked vehicle and not leaving details

It is insured Ted, my insurance company checked the database. I have a £500 voluntary excess though. My insurers said if they get an admission of liability and are able to recover full costs from the other party then I won't be liable to pay the excess. I'm going to pursue a small claims action for uninsured losses - my time, effort and inconvenience too! -

:blushing: I didn't say I wouldn't / won't, just getting the money sorted first! -
Had a cunning, underhand, no-morals, tosser hit my van whilst parked yesterday. Apparently, according to the 2 witnesses, she hit it, stopped, got out , looked at the damage, jumped back in and sped off at pace. Tough break coming for a rash decision.... I've reported to Police and insurance company, it's a locally registered vehicle. Posted on FB in local groups and just about to send off to DVLA for details of the registered keeper. It'll get more expensive with every day that passes and the more admin I have to do. Yesterday: Police log, CCTV review. Today: Insurance company report and request to DVLA for details of registered keeper. Tomorrow: Lost days work while going to Plymouth Police Station to fill in the necessary paperwork for a prosecution. Time and travel to visit repair centre for cost estimate for insurance, a working day lost to wait in while the repair company collect the vehicle and another day lost waiting in for them to bring it back. All the timings and costs of my administrative effort will be the subject of a small claims court recovery action for uninsured losses. The consequences of a selfish and rash action that will come back and bite! Link here to DVLA form if anyone else has similar misfortune! https://www.gov.uk/request-information-from-dvla

They're welcome Gary! Well, not so much the latex glove part. They can keep looking, and I will keep ensuring that everything they think they want to do costs x10 more than they can ever hope to recover. The great thing about a "system" is that it works both ways. I've already had an apology and a token cheque by way of compo. I'm sending it back with the message - double it and add 2 zeros!

Going on holiday.... No problem with that. Not paying outstanding wages bills before going on holiday... Inexcusable. There might be a delta between what YOU think you're worth and what the guv'nor thinks you're worth? My name's Paul and that's between y'all (name the film for massive Kudos!)

It's a conspiracy theory! The AT Bossman has a couple of well paid researchers that throw a hand grenade in every once in a while then quietly exit stage left whilst the rest of us try our hardest not to get drawn in, then finally give in to the urge and, wham, you're hooked! That's the only way I can reconcile some of Vesp's posts.... He's a paid stooge of the management!

Good refresh on an old thread! Not sure if it's nationwide, but I'm finding it increasingly common that domestic customers want to keep "arb waste" after a job. Good news in one respect I guess but not when they seem to think it equates to a discount off job price. From my perspective, in answer to the original question, there is no more or less "value" to arb waste (not a phrase I use) than the cost of removing it. Value is added to "arb waste" when it has completed a process of removal, cutting, splitting, stacking, seasoning and then either using or delivering and selling. The problem customers seem to have is that they think the green wood arising from a tree dismantle has the value of the processed product that is delivered as usable firewood after the processing has been completed because there's a bloke down the pub that said it's worth XXX. Interestingly, HMRC have a view on the subject but that's a whole 'nuther story! Here's a link that refers back to the Gold Coast Selection Trust Ltd v Humphrey [1948] 30 TC 209 which is the source reference but imagine my surprise to find that I get another mention in the Field Court Tax Chambers UK Tax Bulletin March 2016 which follows the original mention in the February 2016 bulletin.
