  1. Just got in and checked my e-mail... really nice to receive that from Jo ... and once again well done to Steve ... and all contributors, what an incredible effort !!!
  2. Great stuff ... benches are mighty impressive:thumbup:
  3. Just as Mutley and Dervish said in a previous post, sometimes you have a go at something and you then get asked for another... even though you would rather move on to something else !! Meerkats proved popular just before Christmas !!! Kept them a bit cartoony and fatter than they should be. (I know that feeling) ... To all fellow carvers and arbtalkers ... Happy new year & good health !!! Hope 2013 is a goodun !!!
  4. Well done Grizz... excellent first attempts:thumbup1:
  5. Looks like you will have to carve two ... paint one ... oil the other !!! as there is no right or wrong .... My vote is NO PAINT !
  6. Woof Woof !! Love this ... I have a springer and a sprocker and this is fab !! How long did you spend on this Roni ??
  7. Nice Site with some very nice work !!
  8. Yes Dervish let us know how you get on... I usually go to Woodfest each year and usually go to Scotland each year so I'll make it end of August and come and cheer you on !!! I dont think I have the confidence to compete ... I can only turn out reasonable stuff if I take my time and stop for a fag every 20 mins !!
  9. Beautiful ... I could live in that !
  10. Love your owls and love the roadblock !! I'm curious ... are you practising 30 minute carvings in order to enter competitions and shows or do you already enter them ?? Wisewood posted in November about entering shows/comps (any news on that WW ?) and I have learned in the past with other things that the best way to improve yourself is to put yourself out there and under pressure ! I noticed some shows are now inviting novice entrants so I was tempted to apply but the thought of standing next to some of the brilliant carvers out there with saw in hand very scary !!
  11. Just sorted mine (first timer!!) and felt the need to say abig well done to Steve and all sponsors ... its mighty impressive and I raise my glass to you ...several times!
  12. Sorry to move off the winch subject but I have to tell someone ..... Wifes 1994 Defender 90 straight through MOT Saturday mornin... My 1992 110 Pick up straight through MOT Monday mornin !! Is this any kind of record as it feels quite strange ???
  13. Hi Nick ...Welcome ... Same as previous posts... carve whatever you can get your hands on ... It always seems a nice piece of oak feels the most special but my experience of sweet chestnut is really good. It usually looks great - nice grain and tough stuff so if you have room to store it ...grab it gratefully !!! I dont carve stuff thats just been felled... usually find it best to leave it 2 to 3 years but sometimes some cracks and splits can add a bit of something to a carving .... its a suck it and see and just when you think youve got it sussed... Good Luck & have fun
  14. Theym Bostin them !!!!
  15. As always lovely to look at and very classy
  16. Nice One ...Nice Shape:thumbup1:
  17. I love the kingfisher !!!
  18. Fantastic... I dont have any suggestion for a title but it makes me want to have a go at doing one !! Ive been staring at it for ages !
  19. Nice One ... great first attempt ... doesnt matter if he looks more like a ted.. he looks very contented.
  20. Nice One Splinters ... he is a chunker:thumbup1:
  21. As always it has to depend on your budget. When I started carving I went for a cheap saw ... but went for a Cannon 14" Dime tip. It is brilliant... stays true square and solid... but its the only one i have had so i cant compare. I'm sure you will find a hell of a difference using any carving bar and in a short time it should give you the confidence to try harder things. I think you have already had best advice from Rob and Dervish ... try a 12" Zebra and if it wears quickly it will at least give you a good idea whether to invest more in the future. Go For it and Good Luck !!
  22. Wow thats brilliant ... very life like. Glad you got the Teak Oil on him before he ran off !!!
  23. Check your lower link arms connection to rear axle. Rotted bracket sheered off on Friday 13th sending our Defender careering off the road. If we'd been driving through the village we could have easily parked it at Barclays Bank counter !!!
  24. Fantastic bit of film ... they certainly had to be hard men ... but i can understand Big J's sentiments !!
  25. Thats a very sweet piece... lovely finish.
