  1. Thats what happens if your chain is too tight!!!!
  2. Hi there Jon! I do like kit....thats why I have no money: The red landy has been ill. Poorly front diff....most of the internal bolts had gone through the splines with much noises. But Mr Carrington sorted me and now as good as new! Are you going to show in Sep? Steve
  3. If you are doing more than 30 mph often, then I wouldn't put underated tyres on. I pay £495.00 for continentals. I do a stack of miles at 50+ and are fully loaded all the time. I also run Michelin's and don't notice any appreciable difference between the two.
  4. My Bandit would eat them nicely...not too certain blowing into a tranny would work!!! Speak to Stobarts about there Scania and let them do the lot and take a % Steve
  5. With a 100m safety distance and a hell of a lot of chip to blow, I can though see a big call for that in Sheffield. Heck it takes an age tidying up as it is!
  6. Yes, quite right and as such would be vat reg very quickly...that unless they work a three day week or work off the books! Steve
  7. Most likely! Though sometimes those with, have got there by not giving it away lightly Steve
  8. Probably the same ones that would see others prices and nip round and knock a tenner off: Steve
  9. Hi HRG, My feeling is that human's been human, it would be exploited by the same people that are already around..... 'just a little bit under' will get them the work. So around it goes again! Its a bit like buying from the cheapest source, it is attractive to the end user...more often than not, dodgy and harmful to everyone else. Steve
  10. Well said that man! Start a register of prices, sign up to it. Get caught under valuing and get whipped with a stingy nettle!..... Do not enter into a race to the bottom with our own colleagues. Steve
  11. Hey Tom, You can spin which ever way you want, bigger kit, shorter day, more production I don't mind. No, we don't charge more than the job is.... just turn up do it and go home in the shortest time period as the biggest single outgoing is labor time! We has an industry, by our own admissions cause a lot of our own financial woes. Hours are spent on forums at show's looking at expensive kit and then entering the market place and charging out at 70 to 120 for a per day per man We then go home and pay 70 for a hotpoint call out charge. We discuss 'gently' the too & fro's of it all, but the running cost escalate and the quality of return diminishes. I'm sure you and a lot more on here have done these rounds more often than me..... I'm now doing work for an eclectrician who are employing us on big tree felling this week. ..... I obviously should have been an electrician! Steve
  12. Hi Tim, Yep, its real difficult to know where to pitch it. I would think operating in a small environment gives you an edge as long as there are not many doing it and you receive a constant requirement. You are also right about the equipment. We set ourselves at everything from 'one branch' to this week in excess of 45 trees felled.... I know owning bigger kit which one makes the money!. But in quite times I also know servicing, ins, costs. Steve
  13. Hi new guy, Its very difficult to place an 'average' also..... what is been brought to the party? 4" chipper or 16", 1x66 that has to be sharpened or a truck load so the jobs is the most productive. brash drag or winch the whole tree for process. There will some that make a margin on £200, I admit that will be a a couple of hours these days! Steve
  14. Hi Skyhuck.... I set my stall in the market of tree work with exactly that... 2/3 days of good return a week. Keep under the limits for Vat. Did not last very long, wasn't the turnover that got me it was been kit heavy, mewp, big bandit, fuel, ..... and as Hodge reminded me I need a new gearbox TD5 this week! losing a fortune in vat returns, I use the fact that there are others 'that will do it far cheaper' as my selling point , sorry I even have been known to say you get 'what you pay for' Whist there are people, for whatever reasons willing to work at low/cheap/economical/bargain/great prices the industry will struggle to pay good, fair, wages. There is no point on one hand 'us' saying the climber should be 180/200 per day and charging £400 for trucks/chippers/fuel.... we need a reality check! Now all that said, there are situation whereby guys £200... I think thats been well covered. Steve
  15. No, its Paul Carrington... I think you missed him at the Arb show. He went just before you guys came over. That wasn't the reason though:biggrin:
  16. Hi John, I have a better scenario, Paul goes in bucket on his own!!! I saw it starting to pucker.... at that point it was milliseconds. It was just like an explosion. Paul was in the bottom of the bucket making like an unraveled spring. Steve
  17. Hi, about 125k if memory serves. I did really try to resurrect the axle without a brand new purchase, not a chance. Nice little truck, it had extra leafs on springs and stacks of power. Traction with firestone off road tyres was quite good (ie without diff locks). It would tip many tons without any problems. Steve
  18. Sometime ago I bought a double cab tipper, caged, off another tree surgeon. I bought it at a good price knowing that 2nd gear was an issue. (grinding on engaging)..... Replaced the box with a recon at £1100 aprox. Still a great truck, as stated a downrated truck, so brakes & exhaust brakes worked well, you could load it right up and it looked just fine. Back axle started to whine, had it opened to see what was wrong.... oh dear just full of bits of unattached cogs and bits of. £4k job, no recon available,so sold to it to a Polish chap. He took transmission guys report, sorted it and sent it to Poland. Nice truck, certain parts really expensive! Can't help you with fuel, never thought about it, at the time had a yard full of Volvo's & Scania's so it seemed really frugal!
  19. Hi John, I have only just realised who you are!!! It was good talking to you at the show. Hope you are still busy and making good margins. Are you going to the APF in Sep? Hoping to get the DART charity down and set up at the 'Global Recycling' stand, that is with their kind support. If you are down, please come over and share a few. Talk soon Steve
  20. Hi Mark, Weight & volume issues are always a problem, chances you will always be up against it short of hugeness which brings its own costing/space/licence issues. I have teamed up with another tree business who has similar outlooks and values, this gives my business the manning and frontage which works brilliant. Some days it his work, sometimes its mine. Give and take and a desire to succeed. Steve
  21. Hi Mark, We chip into a chip trailer on the defender. We are set up as a two vehicle combination. It deals with weight issues a lot better and give us the flexibility I like. Pick up trucks & such would not be viable for the chip volume on a lot of jobs with the Bandit. Steve
  22. Hi Mark, I have this registered as a special vehicle 'Tower Crane' Its run on white with a calabrated tacho, This enables a trailer of direct connection to the crane. No hire/rewards/loads/chip trailer. Can go on motorway with beacons on. No mileage restriction, no 'O' licence. Though a duty of care inspections and obviously loler. HGV required for this vehicle. I know there are varying set ups, this suits us. Steve
  23. Hope you make good on your recovery..... glad you are still able to communicate with us!!! Steve
  24. Hi Ian, thank you for the compliment.... though, if Dean was my uncle he would be a sight older than he is:001_tongue:
