Yes. A knot reduces the strength of the rope more than a splice, it's also another location for a potential failure if tied incorrectly, but these aren't the real concerns. The real problem with a knot instead of a splice in these systems is, as you say, interfering with the hitch in that they can prevent the hitch from grabbing by sitting on top of the cord preventing it from stretching out sufficiently to tighten. Something like a long bowline is a solution, and the one which I use. A splice is better though.... -

MOG, can you not pull a bight out just above the pulley beneath and outside the first link for hauling saws up 'a la hitch climber'...? Don't see how that's any different....?

When you swap the pulley and do away with the maillon Arran, re-tie the prusik so the fishermans lie against the outside of the wraps rather than coming through on the side of the bight, the knots won't jam in the big maillon when you're retrieving it, you'll have a clean knot free retrieval then.... Coming on well mate, I love making up rope tools, really enjoyable!

When you're ready and you really want to it's not as hard as you think. Just take it a minute at a time and you'll be fine. When you fancy one, rather than telling yourself 'no', just tell yourself 'later'.... Good luck with it. Been getting on for 18 months since I quit the fags. I've had a few since, little cigars really, can't face fags anymore, but I can have a couple at the odd event and have no desire the next day. I'm pretty happy I'm over it now. You'll get there!

I know it's not very pc, but I found that the only way to really get into it was work climbing anyway. If the job will stand you slowing down a little bit and you've got your set up about right already it's the best way to work through it I reckon. That's easy for me to say because I don't work for anyone nor am I really on the clock, but that aside, I reckon that any slowing down from using a new system will more than be made up for by the inherent time saving SRT offers over ddrt anyway.... I'll caveat that by saying obviously not on a massive compromised tree on a windy day in a hazardous location, but you know what I mean. If the right tree comes up, get amongst it...

I think it's similar to aeris in many respects and I use that for ddrt. I don't like bounce in my rope though...

Just a kernmantle rope so see no reason why not.... It's well regarded for SRT for it's low stretch.....

I have plain ended rope, I tie a long bowline to clip to the top of my hc, works fine. I have a short line set up with the same basic principle using a short length of OP and an ISC swing cheek pulley

Knots....? Just fisherman's..... Is it the wire core itself which has failed...? You can buy plain wire core flip lines with hard eyes for not a lot of money.... If yours has a 3 way snap in the splice, cut the splice to get the snap out and insert a soft link with a larks head knot to the splice in the new strop and then the snap. You can transfer the rope grab or friction hitch from the old strop to the new one.

I swear apple have gone mental. How do you load your cd's into iTunes then....? I have an ipad and iPhone 5 and they're the biggest load of over-hyped tosh I've ever come across.... Crud in so many ways.... I used to be DEEPLY anti windows but actually, windows XP is probably the best os ever made. Just a pain that you can't get it anymore......
