  1. i like my tirol's, they start off wearable out the box but feel like a bad £200 idea as grip is not that good on smooth ground, but christ, when the sole wear's in they've got the grip of a set of gaff's, and after a year the only wear on them is a 2mm shamford edge on the tip of the sole, and they'er waterproof and your feet are warm in winter and never sweat at all in the summer. i've had a few brands that people rave about but anything light and comfy with a moulded sole doesn't last more than 5-7 month's. here's the but, you can't run very good in them and they are quite heavy for a day on the ground.
  2. first things first bud ,for the inspection long spikes are good but short one's are ok as the guy you work for might frown at spending money on more kit for the job,i've worked for ones like that. as for your flip line ,use two or three plus your main line but for the ascent to the first branche's use like the pole climbers do at the apf ,a piece of polyprop water pipe with a loler'd line through it, ajustable on a prussik if you want and on the outside -leather or race bike handlebar tape(for grip)but because the pipe comes off a roll it's usually the right shape and won't roll down as you ascend . this is just a thought and should be practiced for a few meters first until you feel safe.honestly i don't know why i wrote that it's silly, big shot or good binoculars is the only way to go. crane jobs are fun bud, just remember the first time is taxing on your brain ,a lot going on and to check, just remember to talk to the driver about the job first and always double check your anchor on the tree or crane, and arange signals for jib up or down, boom up or down , this or that side ect.and don't drop any branches on the chains(thats when you leave slack in them and it jerk's the boom if it's heavy)try and youtube some crane jobs if you can, good luck and i hope any of this helps bud.

    Line poles

by the way , when i use a throw line i always aim for the tree next to the one i'm doing, as long as it's on the left, on a tuesday ,,, in august,,, with a north eastily breeze .

    Line poles

you are supposed to use a pole, there's a new one with like a claw hammer style head but sorry, don't know the name or make , all i do know is it's fiber glass ,contact ian morgan arb(should be a website), i know he has one.
  8. WesSpur.com , and check out the MAN'S boots.
  9. they'er all good mate, i've used steel ones for years with the same style pads and fasteners. they look very good ,price is good co's gaff's alone cost around £45.

    Spiking

spikes are awsome but thats co's i started on them, i can do a tree now and you can't see any marks, but thats co's i only stick em' in when i need to and they'er ultra sharp ,but that come's with experience. if your not used to them ,to gain more experience use them on conifers poplar and pine but make sure just the tips are sharp not the three main edges(sometimes your rope lies just in front of your heel) and don't slam them in just place them and apply your weight.

    Strops

like i said on your other thread dude chainsdirect.co.uk , it makes sense. all my climbing kit comes from there now. cheapest around free delivery

    Limb walking

using a taught line sort of go along nearly lying sideways using your hands and feet(like spiderman). if it's a high angle branch, when you start to drop down, strop off and tighten your line to continue. if it's a more lateral branch, when your line is too tight, either use a second anchor point above to continue or sradle the branch and just hump along, just remember to have a loose strop around it incase you loose balance. main thing is when you get to where theres lots of growth on the end it's easier .
  13. listen bud my mate steve at chainsdirect.co.uk has some very good prusik cord,it's a bit thick at 8mm but responds very well as prusik, prob even better as blakes , seems to act like expensive multicore stuff aswell. also he's got some super light harnesses at stupid prices, best checking the site,or if you can't find what you want just phone with your preferd product description , he might have it but at least you can compare prices, just tell him gray sent you, happy climbing bud.
  14. 1.6-2mtr thats cut stand ,then tied with fishermans at both ends to link.
  15. fire, for some reason groundies see it better and it doesn't fade
  16. some hse once asked me if i had loler , "not realy mate" i said, "more of an eagles man than eric clapton".
  17. xtc fire, smells like a butchers shop, soft as a sheep's butt , visible to all and three ton break-strain. i'm on my second.
  18. just anyone there helps, i used to take any mate ,just someone on the floor with a phone . i don't know about you but in my 15 yrs climbing two guy's out of about 70+ i've ever worked with , ground staff or bosses on site could do arial rescue , and thats only recently . if you've got no one then i know it sounds silly but watching ittc climbers on youtube realy helps(i'll get laughed at for that one) and when you climb (saw'less) try using trainers.
  19. i get what you mean, just saw it on youtube yours is like on a bite with the loop, i tried it but it's a bit too stiff like klemhiest, good for drt footlocking though ,but on a regular system using a single strand it frees up that much better.
  20. i use chainsdirect co's they now do everything now, service second to none ,it's only called chains co's thats where it all started , should be called arbdirect now. one important thing, the price isn't diffrent when you phone up to what it was on the web, you know who you are ,other shadey(we reserve the right to alter prices shown) suppliers. just to point out none shown on this thread but advertised on this site.
  21. okay everybody laugh , i always use a prussik loop to climb on ,i've try'ed combo's and other hitches but always come back to it ,it makes your body very strong all that thrusting and stuff and theres never any slack, if it tightens (very rare) then it's 2 seconds to loosen up ,loosen it up a lot and your very fast in the crown. prob second best prussik loop hitch would be a klemhiest but it's a bit tight, a very good hitch is a french prussik but you need a tail ,spiced eye at each end, best to practice the lenth you need by tying off first before you get it made and it needs to be thin rope nothing over 8mill ,it's super fast.
  22. i get it every year around winter time , mostly co's of the cold in your body even if you wrap up warm ,co's of the amount of daylight we get you never quite feel like your awake properly leading to that same feeling like your coming down with somthing , if you look around people in other jobs feel the same aswell, also pressure of sorting out for christmas and being a bit heavier afterwards co's of turkey dosn't help. i find it's not the height or owt it's working a route around the tree that stumps my head, i have to do it in my head two times before i can get on with it. your body also knows how it hurts more if you slip when it's cold. if you climb on your own on a grey misserable day your head won't be in it, just don't worry the feeling will soon go
  23. bet he can't do innerleithen downhill on a full rigid grrrr , i can grrrr
