  1. As a new comer to this I think it is a great forum/resource to learn about our industry and there are some excellent and professional discussions from which everyone can learn from. In the short time I have been on here (now addicted) I have noticed some "know it alls" who like to put others down. Maybe they should remember that it is only a forum to give your opinions and try to help others with your recommendations, that the coments or suggestions may not be the best advice, but as long as its in "good will" we have all got minds of our own! Somethings people say do get your back up, I just smile, rise above it, you only wind yourself up, after all, most things in arb are very subjective with no right or wrong answers. Enough of the negative stuff!!! Overall excellent site, good people, great info and I hope to be a member for the long term. Oh no im turning into a forum geek- please delete my profile
  2. yes that sounds about right
  3. Why would you have to drain your saws?
  4. I didn't want to say that because everybody has to start somewhere, but it is a fair comment.
  5. Hi, I must admit I found you post a bit confusing, but if I understand correctly the hotel have asked you to look at a job, you have been sent an email from the hotel giving you the work spec that they want you to give them an estimate for, so there is no harm giving them a price BUT before you do any work you need to know that it HAS been authorised by the Council. I find the best way to do this is by doing the paperwork (application) myself then I know for sure. The hotel could do this but make sure you see the consent letter before you start work. As you say it is in a conservation area, there is a possibility that they will not be a works consent letter because on receiving an application to carry out works in a CA the Council have a limited time to respond (i think its six weeks) and if you have not heard anything by this time you could do the work. However you are thinking along the right lines, if you are in any doubt a good treeman would ring the local Arb officer and check. The work spec that they have given you does sound very professional so that indicates that someone who knows what they are talking about has spoken to them about this work. Hope this is helpful.

    Boots

Hi mate i have worn hiax protector lights for the last couple of years and can honestly say they are the best boots for climbing i have had, the only downside is they arnt weaterproof, so i have just got a pair of the air power gold which are the same thing only with gortex so should keep your feet dry. My mate has had a pair for 18 months and says they are great. I dont think you can go wrtong with em But while we are on the subject After just having a look around for new boots myself, i was shocked to see that the latest boots that are coming out are creeping upto the £300 mark, will they last twice as long ??? and be twice as good????i doubt it:thumbdown: good job money grows on trees... matt
  8. my suggestion would be Lycoperdon perlatum.
  9. Hello Verena, Glad to see youve joined aswell. Sorry to hear your news. It was a nerve wrecking day for sure. but keep at it, just think how easy it will be having all this time to study one module! you will get top marks next time im sure! matt
  10. Sorry to hear you failed your resit shrub, you definately have at least one more go, because the people who have just done it this year will get a resit. I hope your not going to let it beat you tho, it would be pointless to stop now. try again, you know you can do if you try.
  11. Hi, when you say you dont have to drain it, do you mean you drain the petrol out if you havent used the saw for a while and the fuel may have gone off OR you would drain the fuel out if you knew you werent going to use the saw for a while? Hope that makes sense? Its just I hear people saying that fuel goes off if you leave it for a while and also that the petrol these days is so corrosive to the carbs but I have never had problems. just wondered what you meant. cheers matt
  12. I agree with slack ma girdle on this, tree roots shouldnt affect new houses foundations built to NHBC standards. Trees can damage structures in three ways, falling over or on things. direct pressure-exerting physical force as they grow because they are too close to something or indirect pressure- absorbing water from clay shrinkable soils =shrinkage or stopping absorbing water from shrinkable clay soils and the ground rehydrating = Ground Heave. Other factors do come into it like the water demand of the tree but from what you say I would be thinking whether or not the tree is on a clay shrinkable soil would be the first point of call And to try and answer your question, if the ground is going to heave after the removal of the tree i dont think it will stop the enevitable only prolong the process if you do it in stages. But as Slack says if in dout seek expert advice!

  16. Hi Scott, after robs comments i was curious and had a look at your website, i also think its good. one of the trees that come up on the home page, i recognise it- is it a Monterey cypress at a little church called st tysillio church or something like that down at Angelsey? Ive been to it a couple of times, last time i went it had just been pruned. Did you do the work? made me smile when i saw the pic.
  17. I took the pictures at Arley Arboretum, ill have look what i can come up with and post you some more. matt
  18. How did i not get them first time round? To be honest that Davidia involucrata was a good post without showing the tell-tale fruit and flowers, i just glanced at the leaf without paying attention:biggrin: And the other one looked beech like, hence the name Nyssa sylvatica Nice one, two good posts:thumbup: Your right with the Davidia involucrata, but the first one is a Magnolia, have a look at the cucumber tree. = Magnolia accuminata . good work
  19. spot on mate, they are nice aint they.
  20. heres another im sure youll get in a second.
  21. nope, both wrong! to be honest they are not easy, I know they are not great pics but you have been excellent with the others. I give some clues, first one - a chinese species with large white bracts that hang down giving it one of its common names. Second one, a vigorous north american spp, a clue is "you might eat in it your salad" (common name) matt
  22. [/ATTACH] Here Rob some easy ones for a man of your caliber
