  1. Ok looks like a 4am wake up for me saturday then either that or I may be a bit late:)
  2. I have had the haix Tibet forest boots for just over a year and they are great never had wet feet even when clearing scrub across a stream so standing in ankle deep water most of the day, they are comfortable out of the box, the higher top gives much better ankle support and shin protection than standard length boots and they seem to have the best tread depth of any boot I've seen so you don't slip about so much when it's muddy
  3. Any ideas of a rough start time as I work on a farm most of the time so will have to go and feed/ check animals before I leave from here and it would be good to know how early I'm gona have to be up
  4. My first saw was a B&Q special maculloch 438 however for a cheap and nasty saw it did far more than I ever expected of it (until one day it spontaneously ate its own piston ring) after that I had a husqvarna 435 great little saw and only got rid as a trade in against my current saw husky 353 and now have a very nice 254xp to go with it both good saws but given the choice I pick up the older 254 every time just has so much more go
  5. I'm in the same situation as rich(rec climbed a bit but no certs) and also in Kent so if its ok I'd love to tag along and am happy for people local(Ashford) ish to jump in the van with me or share fuel costs and jump in with someone else whatever is easiest . Cheers graham
  6. I'm only going by husqvarnas web site but according to that the 560xp has rev boost and the 555 doesn't. this apparently translates to 0.4kw power difference in favor of the Xp but the 555 is better part of £150 cheaper so my question is has anyone used a 555 and for my uses (coppicing/logging/) is it realy worth spending the extra for the Xp
  7. So most of you recomend the 560xp aside from its little niggles but has anyone got any experiance with the 555 going by the spec sheet it's prety much the same saw only without rev boost or silver bits and being as I prefer my 353 to my mates 346xp do you think it may be a better choice. It's also a bit cheaper I'm guessing just because it's not an xp
  8. Ok I have read most of the threads on here and other places about the 560xp and picked one up in a shop and quite liked the feel of it so should i sell my 353 and 254 or should I just hang on to them. Most of my work is coppicing/logging so would I realy gain much in upgrading what do you guys think?
  9. I know most will say they are heavy and outdated but I like my weaver and there are plenty of them on the bay for not much money. If you are only starting out and not going to be spending a long time in the trees then I'd say they're plenty comfortable enough and if you wanted to upgrade at a later date then you could always bung it back on the bay And make some of your money back
  10. Hi guys my 335xpts chain snapped yesterday and I was wondering what you guys would recomend as a decent replacement the bar fitted is a 12" Oregon 91 however it had a dolmar chain fitted and after checking with my elecy micrometers the bar groove is between 1.52-1 .64mm and the chain drive links are only 1.28 ish. I'm guessing the bar should be closer to 1.3mm so am thinking just replace both and know that everything matches as it should
  11. As per title having now run my 353 against a 254 I'm wondering if there are any little mods that can be done to give the 353 a bit more go. I'm guessing that it can be ported and tweaked similar to the 346xp as they use mostly the same parts and if so what would the rough cost be to have something like this done Cheers tractor62
  12. Forgot to add possibly the best Terry Tibbs ( "wooden ladders talk to me" ) impression I've ever heard from one of the guys in the jones tent on Friday afternoon made me laugh thanks again will defo try to get along for the next one
  13. Hi guys just thought I'd pop a post up to say thanks for a good afternoon. I popped along not knowing what to expect realy and was very impressed considering the weather you guys have done a great job. Realy valued being able to try out a different setup to what I usualy climb on and having the experts on hand to show a newbee like me how to use it (even managed an ascent for the 3peaks thing) and subsequently went straight to the jones tent and bought myself the kit I had been using. All in all a good day thanks again Tractor62 (graham)
  14. I know the old saying of if not broke don't fix but I'm considering fitting a new piston/ring just to give it a bit more go and wanted to know what peoples thoughts are. I have found a complete piston/ring/pin and clips kit on the bay made by Golf at what looks to be a good price but having never got into saws this far I don't know if Golf are any good or not and weather I'd just be better to leave it alone and just fix it if and/or when it gets more tired
  15. Got a chance to put a couple of tanks through the 254 today cutting up some old oak and I have to say I'm very impressed with the 15" bar it flies through the wood even with the bar fully buried so for the time being the 353 will be getting well and truly relegated to spare saw
  16. Well it's finally back from the menders and based on the very quick few logs I cut with it it's shaping up to be a worthy rival to my 353s position as main saw I'm planning on fitting a new 15" bar and chain as the 18" it came with is a bit tired and at the mo it still owes me less than a nasty B&Q saw so I'm well happy
  17. Yeah mine is like that but that's because the gears aren't 1st 2nd 3rd its 1st 2nd 4th in low then 3rd 5th 6th high. From what I know the dexta/super dextas were known for being quite fast for their time and I mine seems to be no exception as it will if thrashed keep up with a modern 40k new holland. Cheers Graham
  18. Thanks for the comments guys so going by what your saying it should be a good back up saw to my much newer husky 353 and hopefully still be a cheap powerfull saw once its been sorted out. I'll keep you posted on progress as and when I get it up and running
  19. I picked up a 335xpt a couple of days ago on the bay for just over half what your being asked to pay and although I have never used the sthil 200/020t my first impressions have been very good with a 12" bar and a sharp chain it's capable of chomping through 10" poplar no trouble. the only thing so far is it seems like all the husky Xp saws Ive used in that all it's power is right at the top of its revs and not much torque low down but that's just xps for you. If you can get one cheap enough then i would go for it
  20. Basically I picked up a fairly straight clean looking 254xp from a farm sale a little while ago it starts but won't run seems to have plenty of compression and nothing obvious looks amiss it is it worth spending money on having it looked at by someone that knows more than I do (I only know basic day to day servicing) or are they not worth it as they don't seem to come up much on all the searches I have done. Your. Your views/opinions would be very welcome thanks
  21. If you can have it free id defo give it a go its a fordson super dexta and going by the colours its a 1962 (ford changed to white/blue in 1963) I have one exactly like that only in running order with panels mostly complete it's a great little machine mine gets used for ploughing, rotovating, grading and hauling out log wood with an adapted old 3ton tipper trailer chassis. It's far lighter on the ground than a full size tractor but is much more useable than a quad. Hope you can get it going and preserve it but if not let me know as I would be very interested in it as a parts donor for my one Cheers tractor62 (graham)
  22. I had a 435 for a year or so and it was a great little saw running a 15" bar it never felt under powered to me it coped with logging some 16-18" ish poplar no problem. I have recomeneded this saw to a couple of friends who are also more than happy with them. I only got rid of mine as I traded it in against my current saw (353) as I was getting more work and needed a bit more power and the reliability of a pro spec saw still only running 15" bar but I would think for your needs it would be overkill and a waste of money unless you plan to do more in the future.
  23. Ok so after a good few months of being used and abused the verdict is that these are easily the best work boots I've ever had. my feet have stayed dry even in the snow and so far the brambles in the woods I have been working in have only managed to have any effect on the laces (1 broke and finding a decent replacement was a pain) that said all my old boots have better part of given up after this kind of abuse so a pair of laces per year isn't too bad in my opinion. So in summing up if you are after a chainsaw boot that will keep your feet dry, warm, safe and be comfortable and well maid enough to work around a farm/timber yard/bramble thicket/coppice wood or a bit of climbing then I'd seriously consider these Cheers Graham
  24. I have a 353 that gets used for coppicing and logging fairly full time and so far I can't fault it I have had a play with a friends 550xp and it is a cracking little saw however IMHO it is a bit like the 346xp in that all the power is right at the top of its rev range whereas the 353 seems to have a better spread of power and torque. For what you have said you want to do with it I'd go for a 353. Hope this helps Tractor62 (Graham)
  25. After weeks of waiting for a simple order (rope and karabiners) and lie after lie from their customer service dept I have just canceled my order with Abbeypro and really wish I had read this thread before dealing with this Micky mouse outfit. My advice would be to steer well clear
