  1. Does anyone know what effect ethanol content has on petrol’s susceptibility to detonation? Will high ish compression engines run on regular start knocking soon?
  2. I’m currently sat looking at one in my garden, full of half seasoned conifer and apple. I retrieved it from the woods out the back, from a hugely inconvenient hollow surrounded by hugely inconvenient vegetation. I can only assume kids dragged it in there for fun (plus the half a mile from the supermarket). Were I recruiting logisticians, I’d begin with the local urchins. Very impressive.
  3. Thorough and helpful answer. Much obliged. My first thought was plait it, which I now see the problem with. My second thought was make two hedges with a six foot gap between them but I'm getting the idea that that's nearly as pointless because one side of each hedge wouldn't get animal trimmed.
  4. The laboriousness aside, why wouldn’t/couldn’t a wide hedge be plaited at its current width? Light not getting to the middle?
  5. That’s absolutely terrible advice. The tree officer’s cousin will do the work, do a shit job, charge fifteen times the going rate and then both of them will go round to the house of his sainted aunt and spit in her face.
  6. That’s the archetype of a bs website. The state is the most egregious incompetent and liar out there.
  7. Probably one of your ghastly neighbours thinking that they can save their ash from dieback if they kill yours (or some similar joined up thinking). These allotment woodlands attract the absolute worst people.
  8. Fix it. The first job you do with it will pay for the repairs. Consider the matter annoying but closed. Move on.
  9. I can’t be the only tree bloke happy working above ground where I can see targets but worried about hitting buried utilities underground. I’d always get a handsomely insured bona fide subcontractor for stump grinding.
  10. Ah. Hadn’t considered planing.
  11. Could the radiator have been leaking slowly but the drips have been caught by the under engine tray? I’ve got a driveshaft leak (I think) on my van but the oil sits and congeals on the tray rather than showing itself on the driveway.
  12. Are hardwood beams usually cut full dimension (as opposed to nominal dimensions commonly used on softwood where a 2x4 is actually 1.75”x3.5”)? So would an oak 2x4 actually measure 2”x4”?

    ArbDogs? Pics!

Picture only to shamefully grab your attention I’m afraid. I’m after an Alsatian/German Shepherd or close cross. Speaking with rescues already but open to private arrangements. Not mega fussy on specifications; age, sex etc. PM me if anyone happens to come across a likely candidate please. Anywhere in England or Scotland possible.
  14. I’ve always thought they’re just different for the sake of being different. What advantage do they supposedly have over a bollard?
  15. Sawdust and old engine oil.
  16. I’m afraid that my prevailing position must therefore most cordially revert to that of my first post in this thread. Seriously though. Some clipboard enthusiast who can’t satisfy a woman will read this in business hours and we’ll all need to buy load cells.
  17. An example of a relatively tricksy thing I did. Can’t remember why but it made sense at the time with what was in front of me. Just see it as an example of inventiveness rather than a how to.
  18. Returning to the main topic, the advice I’d give is some 2” stuff is stronger than some 6” stuff and it comes down to way more than just size. It’s species and how you load it. Think of tying high into topped Lombardy poplar regrowth then transferring into another tree. Could be a 6” stem at the tie in but it’s a long lever on a probably weak knuckle. If you want to get a particularly high or particularly convenient tie in and you’re questioning the strength, think of it more like a rigging problem. A double rope can go through more than one crotch, like loading both sides of a Y. Single rope tie ins give you loads of options. I very often redirect, fishing pole, wrap etc to get a convenient dangling point that won’t matter if it breaks because the point would just slip back to the last redirect/union/sling/whatever. Obviously keep an eye on it but look to invest time setting it up well so you can work confidently from it throughout the day. I can’t remember having a tie in point break, which means either I’ve not had one break or it wasn’t scary enough to remember because I built it with redundancy in mind.
  19. Once upon a time I’d have argued for days about the healthiness of raw and unimpeded expression but luckily I now don’t care enough to. Your site. Consider the matter resolved.
  20. Meant partially in jest. Some will certainly appreciate the sentiment. I do agree, a good thread though. I’ll post something about anchors if I think I can add anything. Fair enough, Steve but I lose a bit of my verve when I don’t swear.
  21. Interesting. Previously choked with ivy?
  22. Post a comparison with your 180 when you're up and running please. Include which bars and chains you're using. I suspect your 180 is on 3/8 picco.
