  1. I bought premixed pointing mortar from Ty Mawr Lime in Brecon and you can pack that in, if necessary smash small bits of stone and ram them in.
  2. Whats the exact model of that stove . It looks like either a cassette / inset model which should be fitted in a hole in a wall , in a fire place or it a free standing stove with some convection covers missing . Edit: Found its a Stovax Riva Avanti F40 . .. I cant believe how unfinished they look
  3. For a free standing installation as in the OP the minimum size of the hearth is 840 x 840mm . As said ,it should be a clearly defined area to warn peeps not to go fitting carpets or rugs there Hearth regulations for a wood burning stove - Stovefitter's Warehouse WWW.STOVEFITTERSWAREHOUSE.CO.UK Hearth Regulations: General Okay, strap in" this is going to get technical. Got a coffee? Sandwiches? A hearth is...
  4. All I can think of is that the band is forming a reservoir that holds the water higher than the inner skin spiggot and the wind blows it though the vertical gap in the band? 300 degree silicone is more than adequate, I bet you dont feel any heat there at all
  5. You should have a roof support in the rafters and no joint within a certain distance of any floor ,ceiling or roof rafter spaces so the joints can be inpected. But in any case the joint should not leak ,have you raised the question with the supplier https://www.stovecentre.ie/product.php?id_product=522 Do you have a picture of flue and roof
  6. So you only have two locking bands on the whole flue? If the locking band would be Part below and part above the roof it doesnt sound like the layout was very well designed...was it a signed off install? If you look at the video I posted in a recent thread, thats a Convesa h cowl with a standard locking band. were above 700ft in the teeth of the prevailing wind and it hasnt blown off in 5 years
  7. Can you swap the bands over ,move the structural band inside . the temperature on the outer skin is way below 300 Id be surprised if it even went over 100. The temp on my twinwall hardly gets above 50-60 6” above the single skin
  8. Its not recommended to seal some flues, its in the instructions not to . By sealing between the new and old may hold more water in that could have run out of the joint . What cowl do you have
  9. Did a few cut tests on the new 5ah batteries that came with the saw and compared the runtime with a 4 year old 5ah battery on the same saw...pile on the left the old battery, on the right, one of the new ones..the former did 43% more. cuts..had the similar result against the other new one...Could Makita be sacrificing runtime to gain longivity I wonder?
  10. I addition to a damper slide Ive machined a circular hole out of a couple Rayburn soot boxes and installed a counter balanced flap which can be fine tuned to the conditions. The flaps can also be fitted into the side opening of a flue "T" box just above the stove to do the same job.
  11. With the fire cold stuff something up the flue to restrict it . Then light a smoke match or pellet in the stove and watch where the smoke escapes https://www.toolstation.com/smoke-pellets/p38123?store=ON&utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=googleshoppingfeed&gclid=Cj0KCQiArvX_BRCyARIsAKsnTxNV9kWuz88WnPYnVrosiFr1hT3-3m2UqbLBhIGtIV2T5d4v3Wd2qREaAkSzEALw_wcB
  12. By raking the embers it removes the insulating white ash that cover them making for faster ignition and cleaner burn of the new fuel...well thats my theory anyway based on my observations and the fact that when barbequing the ideal fire should have a layer of white ash on top so you don't set your bangers on fire.
  13. You could use one of these to stiffen it up and go 2.5m above your last support, support being the band on the facia. Sflue Stove Flue for Wood Burning Stoves - 150mm - Structural Locking Band - Painted Black. 14. Difficult to tell the brand externally from distance as there are quite a few of them. Selkirk have their label stuck on the inner skin just below the spiggot end on each length but there may be one on the cheek of the base support. Although Selkirk have one of the best distance to combustables ,unboxed and boxed, for internal use the exterior seam joint has a rougher raised finish.
  15. We all want as little smoke as possible but the cleanest burning stove can produce smoke especially after first lighting and useful for diagnostic purposes. Those two stoves in my chimney vid were a prime example as they burn superbly clean under normal circumstances.
  16. . Watch where the smoke comes out of the cowl and once out does it get up and away or fall below the roof. The removable plate above the fire may not be seated correctly but take it out and light some paper and cardboard in the firebox to see if it pulls better. Also make sure the cap at the bottom of the flue “y” box is well sealed.. you could light some paper under there to see if pulls the flame / smoke up and out the top but shut stove door and vents beforehand...
  17. If thats the cowl you have, the one in the last pic ,its just a rain hat and totally useless for downdraft. Is the flue higher than the ridge?
  18. Can you post a pic of your flue and roof preferably with the smoke coming out, any trees or. buildings higher than it close by. Presumably this was a certified install ,did they test the flue for draw?
  19. Next step would be to Try again by adjusting bottom hinge out or top in 1/2 turn and handle where it is or in one turn. I that doesn't help , post a picture of the seal looking along the door from the handle edge
  20. What cowl did you try, a Stainless steel “H” cowl, Ive never known one fail. Ill try and find youtube link to two I have on my house .
  21. Did you test the seals all round with a strip of paper before you started adjusting as maybe only one reqired adjusting. Also did you unwind the door handle one turn out which pushes the seals tighter to the body. If the handle is now tight, screw it in a turn to loosen it. But if you didnt adjust the method I suggested, I would return it to the original position and start again
  22. The first vision 500 I had used to burn hot, when the seals were adjusted cold with a strip of a4 paper all round the door and ash pan .As the stove warmed up a gap opened up several mm wide at mid point of the upper door enough to see the flames through. The store where I bought it changed the door but was still the same. After a lot of wrangling I got a new stove which has been perfect. I would recheck the seals when hot
