  1. Awesome thread Adam, I learned alot at college but it was more "do it like that" and little explanation on why (mostly I think staffing levels affected this) Hope you don't mind but I'm documenting this for quick groundy education (obviously followed by real training) wonderful stuff... can't wait till your up and running again... Thx again buddy:thumbup:
  2. Distels all the way matey... bought a pair ready for my 38 and was I happy or what.. nothing like the confidence you get from a good set of spikes!!
  3. I'd have to agree Ollie I'm 34 and in my second year level 3 at Riseholme college lincolnshire I hold 30, 31 and 38 and I'm working towards 39. I have 3 years exp at the college and some but very little exp in the industry however I spent 12 years as a builder including running my own firm. I'm reading this and wondering if company's are going to see me as "another college leaver". I have worked hard to change profession and only hope someone will give me a shot at a full time job when i finish in June.
  4. dont suppose someone has a pic of pulley on cambium saver? sounds smooth.. also does it still retrieve?
  5. Helps loads mate.. I'm a worrier and as such get all twitchy before tackling assessment's or tests of any kind, helps me get all the niggles out the way before the actual day so I can just glide through without over-thinking.... That and I know it makes me a safer worker.
  6. For training sure, but in cs38 itself what is the recognized practice for setting artificial anchor atop the pole to enable pole rescue.. I'd been told that a tape sling with two karabinas (one gate each way) was the method but now I'm a little unsure and don't want to make any needless mistakes in my 38 hence all the questions.
  7. what would you use instead of the two karabiners I'd been advised to use?
  8. This is as I thought.. cool. I love this forum.. I can get more info in one lunchtime on here than I can sometime's from college.. lol don't tell them I said that
  9. Also while on the subject of pole rescue, is it cool to use tape sling and a couple of climbing carab's to set the anchor for pole rescue??
  10. firstly thx... This is how I saw it in my head but just to clarify... my flipline flips (as yours does) and when you say choked climbing line how do you achieve this? i.e. running bowline, carab etc.. I usually climb on a hitch and so use the spice normally but obviously have to change the system slightly to "choke" for my spiking.. makes perfect sense for the safety, just need the official stance on it.
  11. Hi, I'm doing my 38 in the next few weeks and have recently been told that I should choke my strop with a running bowline while i'm spiking.. was wondering if an assessor would let my know the current in's and out's of preferred practice on this matter before I fail on something so silly... thx in advance for any help:001_huh:
  12. I use the Dragonfly and after a year it's started to feel real comfy however a few people I know tried the treemotion and the show and said it was the most natural feeling harness they've ever tried... the look on their faces said it all.. I love my dragonfly but unless anyone tops those reviews I'll be sporting a treemotion in the next year or two for sure.
  13. Steve d would gladly rig us something up... quite sure that man can make anything.. a real A-TEAM style effort required
  14. I also loved smoking... really loved it.. Giving up makes a huge difference... I smoked for 18 years from 13 years old, between 20 and 40 a day... gave up after one year training to do this job.. I've started this work late really at 30 years old... second career... saw a guy climbing a tree and thought I wanna do that... never would have made it without stopping smoking!! congrats on the all clear Andy and good luck to everyone trying to quit... get rid!!
  15. use alpine butterfly a foot and a half above my spiced eye attached to my hitch climber to give better leverage on pulling my butt back up a tree... really versatile knot... gotta be one of my favourites.
  16. Thanks guys this will prove useful
  17. tbh without tickets theres no chance of work in the industry... at least with tickets your on a par with everyone else.
  18. I'm in England, in the midlands and though i'm not working at the moment because of the course i'm on there is work about even near here... plenty to the south and sevral of the guys i'm on the course with got work in forestry as soon as they had tickets.
  19. Hey wired4smoke i'm new here too 31 in age and also always fancied doing tree work, I'm through my 30, 31 and national certificate... now I'n studying my 38, 39 and extended national deploma... heh nice to see like minded people.... I've always use Honey Brothers at Arborist Equipment - Tree Surgeon Supplies - Climbing Accessories .. thing i've noticed most is that all places have similar prices you ma save a few quid here or there but only real discounts I've found is at the arb shows.. hope this helps I'm sure many others have ideas on where to buy from.
  20. I'm new to this site and looking for a little help with an assignment i'm working on.. from experience does anyone know how long it takes roughly to progress from assistant tree office to senior tree officer? I'm trying to get an average length of time as all the councils I spoke to seemed to have no time scale for it at all. any help would be greatly appreciated. MWArb
