  1. I have done work for free!! and will continue to do my absolute best to do all my work in the best interest of the tree's primarily... I understand that this is a money based industry and we all wanna keep our houses, kids, dogs etc in good health (along with our bank balance lets face it:sneaky2:) IMO trees of all sizes need our attention on a global scale... I change industry to work with tree's because I enjoy them so much, i rec climb them because I enjoy it and I'd work on them free of charge from time to time because I love the job so much and more importantly I love the look of a good tree on any landscape.
  2. Agreed Andy.. although we all want to make money... and the clients wish often takes precedents over our opinion or the trees needs, are we not in this industry to care for trees? Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk 2
  3. Had the Kask 3 years and going strong.. will soon be washing the foam insert but that's all. Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk 2
  4. Call again and record it.. trading standards would be interested in such rude customer service. Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk 2
  5. Nice, will have to try this.. Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk 2
  6. I find new cords take a while to work in.. a loose knot will slip, tidy and dress the knot so its tight also try nudging the knot up by hand when you want it to bite, one of mine is a little longer than the other and it needs a nudge. Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk 2
  7. Agreed! Do they think we all just have kids and never talk to them??? My kids have been taught real values like manners, hard work and loyalty... While teachers are asking this of children I find myself teaching my 14 year old son where places like Edinburgh are because apparently geography doesn't include world maps anymore... I have a child on the way and I'm sure gonna make a huge effort to bolster her upcoming education with plenty of real skills... everyone has at some time done the odd job for a favor or a small fee, trees or other i'm sure... ok rant over
  8. I like how most of the bo bo's are coniferous... friend of mine gave me sound conifer advise yesterday... " just cut at base and crane them into a whole tree chipper " .. sounds like my kind of day
  9. Dunno about you but I had just got home from loosing £4500 of extras on a contract that got pulled out from under me while I was already on it... very annoyed... looked out my window at home and saw a guy working his way up a tree and thought yes.. that's what I wanna do instead... here I am.. cant wait to get started now.
  10. Ace, this is what I'm hoping to find in my area when I start looking for work.
  11. Loving the three A's.... as for the latter, well I wouldn't have chosen to re-train if I didn't want to start at the bottom, earning my spurs as it were.... wouldn't have it any other way.
  12. You are a revelation compared with my last profession... I have to say that from the responses I've had so far (and conversations in other threads) all the guy's on here have strong work ethics and no matter how small or simple the request everyone tries to offer help, advice and opinion without judgement... This really is the industry for me.
  13. alas my licence is post 97 by 4 years however I have to agree with retaining staff... if someone puts faith in me and gives me the chance to get good money for hard work I'd stay as long as they wanted me.. good, loyal employers are getting as rare as good workers in my opinion these days. maybe it's the cynic in me but several times in the building business employers drop employees as soon as they've served they're purpose.. not saying Arb's are the same.
  14. I'm not a military man myself but my son has started at army cadets in a nearby village and I have to say It's improving all of his social skills and work ethic.
  15. Ace, this again is what I was hoping.. although my driving licence is 2001 because I started driving late lol... nice to hear that hard work and determination can still count for something in a world of quick fix and quick buck.
  16. Understandably annoying for you Tony... will pm you, perhaps I can be useful to you.
  17. This is my biggest fear.... I hold no grudges against the guys at home with parents.. good luck to them, a hard worker is a hard worker regardless of age or situation, I just hope they understand the blessings they have with such little overheads.
  18. Hope to find guys like you in my area... this is exactly what I was hoping when I decided to retrain in the first place
  19. thx for the response so far guys all good stuff... don't want anyone thinking i'm knocking the young lads leaving college, I went to college with some great lads and some of them are flying in the industry already.... in the building industry young lads are used more often as they have more time to give you and work for less with little or no responsibilities at home. I wanted to see what the opinion here was and so far I have to say I'm happy to see hard work and dedication coming out on top.
  20. Hi Guys I have seen a lot of threads for college Vs time served but none that tell me what I'm after so here goes my first thread... I am 33, I was a builder for 12 years (good reference) decided to take two years off then re-trained as a tree surgeon, went to college and got level 2 arb, level 3 forestry and arb, 30, 31 and 38. finished in june aiming for 39 in sept/oct. I am a hard worker, quick learner and have my own climbing kit and transport (no saws) My question is this... how may of you would chose to employ me over a young lad with similar or the same qualifications? and why?
  21. Looking forward to getting the next installment Adam
  22. lol didn't think it'd be that soon

  23. Hi Dave, Martyn here... figured I'd get in touch and see how your time looks this summer for a climb, lemme know when your about

    Thx buddy

    Cs 38

I passed my 38 in march and I was like you... spent ages stressing about the assessor and the prospect of doing something wrong.. all I can add to what the guys have already said is know your theory sheets inside out, practice your limbs and rescues and the best advise I had before I did mine was "you can climb... enjoy it" and I have to say I had an ace day (all the worrying asside )
  25. Had this problem myself...Hitch climber pdf says that you should use the bottom for the friction hitch attachment and middle for the end of your climbing line so the krab's are offset... changed mine accordingly and all is now well, the top hole is for further attachments.. I'll try and find the link...
